Title: Will I finally get to renuild my Avenge-X today? [2025-05-09]
Post by: GTA-Airgunner on May 08, 2025, 12:18:01 PM
Good Morning Airgunners!  Thank you for being part of the GTA!

I woke up today to a thunderstorm in the desert.  We really need the rain, but I really need to get down to the RANGE!  Oh well.  It looks like I'll try and get down there over the weekend or early next week.  But the less-than-optimal conditions outside do provide a great opportunity to finally take my Avenge-X apart and hopefully get it fixed up.

I received a .177 Avenge-X classic from PA back when they first came out.  It had leaking issues out of the gate, but they seemed to sort themselves out on their own fairly quickly.  So I did my work with it, upgraded to the .22 barrel, and all was good.  I planned on doing a series on setting it up and fine-tuning it late last year but found that the leaking issue was now no longer "intermittent."  It was blowing air out as fast as I could put it in.  It's leaking right around the gauges and the joint where the tank meets the receiver.  It also had a bit of reg creep out of the gate where, after a fill or sitting for a bit, the pressure in the plenum would equalize with what was in the tank.  But, take a couple of clearing shots, and it was fine for a while.  Is this just "normal" for the Avenge-X?  I guess we'll find out, as I bought a new reg for it along with the O-ring kit.

A while back, I picked up a couple of rebuild kits from PA and a regulator. The cost seems a bit high at about $120 all in, given the original cost was only $450ish. It's now up to $500, and who knows where that will go with our current economic situation. So, maybe learning how to maintain your gear isn't a bad thing at all. It's certainly more affordable than tossing a gun in the trash and buying another one. Anyway, I digress.

I have a plan! I'm going to try to fix mine and learn how to make it shoot again. Then, I have a buddy who's sending me his .25 cal Avenge-X classic to fix and tune. I'll use that gun for some video work and document the process so that others can do the same kind of repair and maintenance when needed.  I'm guessing that you all already know all the tricks with the Avenger / Avenge-x rifles.  Please feel free to share them here so that I can get some tips ahead of time.

I do have a question to pose.  The budget PCPs that are cast metal and plastic, do you all consider them "disposable" airguns vs acquisitions for the long term?  I've found that they tend to wear out in a few years, whereas higher-end guns, maybe costing 2x or 3x, tend to last much longer with fewer issues.  I get that you get what you can get when you can get it and that spending $1000+ on an airgun may be completely out of bounds for many folks.  But I'm curious to know where you all stand on things.

Anyway, I'm going to head to the office and get started on getting things cleared so that I can get to work on my gun.  I hope you all have a great day and I look forward to your comments and insight!

Thank you all for being part of the GTA!
Cheers
Rick

Rick, I am looking forward to your upcoming video of the repairs on an Avenge-V and thank you many times over for the constant attention you give to this very special community.  I am gladdened to read that someone is finally getting around to doing a video on the tear-down and rebuilding of the Avenge-X.  Early on in my PCP experience we had any number of people showing how they took apart their air guns and even the modifications and upgrades to improve power and performance (measured increases to transfer ports, modifications to magazines and such).  One of the things I would like to see is a complete listing of O-rings used with the Avenge0-X, and all other PCPs.  PyramidAir does have a schematic on their website for the Avenge-X but the information concerning O-ring sizes and hardness is sorly lacking.

thanks for the comments,

I've had some correspondence with Captain O-Ring today and I think we should be able to get that data once they have it compiled.  They are having issues getting it from PA on the Avenge-X line.  They have a kit for the avenger.  You may want to take a look as they can probably give you that data easily enough.

Thanks again!
Cheers
Rick
