Title: .20 caliber pellet sizer
Post by: Ike the GSD on May 03, 2025, 03:19:24 PM
I bought one of these today, I'm going to try some experiments with it, I'll fill in the details when it arrives👍

Interesting! Years ago I made my own .177 pellet sizer of similar design, however the one I made didn't "full size" the pellet preferring to keep the pellet skirt a bit larger than the pellet head......

Supposedly 4.52mm JSB Exacts straight from the tin..........

Anywhoo.....since I wanted to continue shooting the die lot marked and dated Crosman Premiers in my HW95 the decision was made make a pellet sizer that would do a couple things, (1) guarantee that all pellets were consistently sized and (2@ they would fit the leade consistently

Initially I made a couple sizers lapped to put out head sizes in 4.48mm for the newer HW95 with the snugger bore than my older Beeman R9 which had a looser bore. I found that the old die lot marked and dated .177 Crosman Premiers from the 1250 count corrugated box (now discontinued) were the most accurate pellet I shot. After I bought the newer .177 HW95 I found that the CPLs were a VERY snug fit in the leade which led to "sore loading finger shooting sessions". I "solved" that HW95 issue by trying a couple different pellet brands but the supposedly 4.52mm JSB Exacts I tried were inconsistently undersized from the tin that during one field target match I had two "dry fires" using the looser fitting Exacts. I would have had a third dry fire if I didn't notice the loose Exact flipping out of the leade when I was re-latching the barrel! To confirm that the Exacts were indeed inconsistently undersized I did some measuring with my digital caliper..

Here is a sketch of my "pellet sizer" along with a few pic of the ones I've been using............

Later I found that lapping the 4.48mm sizing ring to 4.50mm "put out" CPLs thatwere accurate from both my .177 R9 and the .177 HW95 so all later sizing was "4.50mm size".

Here is a pic of unsized boxed CPLs............

Anywhoo, since the die lot marked and dated Crosman Premiers have become "unobtanium" I've settled on the 4.52mm H&N Field Target Trophy as an OK substitute after pushing through the 4.50mm die...........

WOW Ed, thank you for the wonderful write up👍 I plan on swaging under sized 22 pellets down to .20 cal just to see what happens, I see a long time ago a fella posted a thread where he was swaging .22's down to .20 and he actually got good results. Thanks again Ed

I ordered one also, NOE bullet molds has done nothing for .20 cal, and a sizer may be versatile :)
