Title: air leaking at the valve (disco)
Post by: 22mag on November 30, 2011, 06:18:31 AM
I have problem with air leaking at the valve on my discovery. On 1000 psi I can shoot but if I inflate more air and get about 1500 psi or more, hammer haven't enough force to open valve. I have 0.040" wire hammer spring with 16 coils. In valve I have 0.040" spring with 5 coils. If I set up easier spring in valve (0.030"wire, 5 coils) I can't inflate air because air is leaking by itself.
Can someone help me to solve the problem, please.

When using a very light spring to close the valve, you might have to pull back on the bolt to get the hammer off of the valve stem as you start to fill the tank.  Once you have enough air pressure in the tank, the valve should seal as it normally would.

Regarding the hammer not being able to knock open the valve, you will have to use a stronger hammer spring or use more hammer spring preload.  The situation you have is normally referred to as valve lock, but usually occurs at pressures a little higher than the usual maximum fill pressure.

It's not that your hammer doesn't have the force to open the valve it is the fact that the combined pressure and valve spring rate are to high. That .040 wire x 5 coil spring in your valve is way to stiff. For a given spring where everything else is the same if you decrease the number of active coils you increase the spring rate.

Put the stock valve spring back in and do as Lloyd suggests, cock the the rifle and then charge it.

As for the Valve leak are you sure the air is coming from the valve not seating? Could it be coming from around the valve assembly and between the tube?

Yes, I am sure that air is leaking through the valve because I hear that loud whistling come of transfer port (barrel isn't installed).
I keep rifle cocked when I inflating air, and it is still leaking
And... I can't put back stock spring because I lost that  :(

You can get a new spring from crosman

If you take the disco apart please please make sure it is infact completely degassed before you unscrew anything

I have done tuning disco by Lloyd-ss instruction, so I was taken disco apart for about 10 times.
All the same, thanks for warning

Mike speaks from experience.

I would go with the .030 wire spring then.

Does it leak air when cocked? If so the valve seat may be damaged.
