Title: Dreams
Post by: JPSAXNC on March 05, 2025, 09:06:59 AM
After 75 years of good dreams and bad dreams, I've never had one where I was eating anything?

Reading your post and thinking about it, I don't think I have ever had a dream (in 82 years) where I ate anything, either.  Interesting.

I have dreamed of eating Gumbo.  I also dream in French - but I don't understand French.  ::)
I am able to taxi, take-off, and fly an airplane in my dreams.  But I have never landed one in my dreams or while awake either.

I have heard that some people dream in black and white, and some dream in color.

If I dream at all I rarely remember them.

I often have dreams which I remember when I awake.   They tend to be long, complex, in color, multiple characters, conversations, with lots of scenery and interesting things going on.  Sometimes there is actually background music like in a movie.   Sometimes when I wake up I remember the music and lyrics for a while but I've never written them down.  I can often fly, with great effort, by flapping my arms or can effortlessly leap to enormous heights.  I have been killed a few times in the dream which usually wakes me up but not always.   Occasionally I'll know that I am dreaming and try to manipulate the dream and keep it going.   Sometimes I'll have a terrifying dream but that's OK.   I really look forward to and enjoy my dreams, they're like being in a movie.  Unfortunately as I get older I have fewer great dreams but they are still pretty good.

Flying for me is pretty effortless, although maneuverability isn't great, and I can jump from great heights and float gently downward.

I've had all manner of dreams.

I've definitely dreamed of food and eating, and I've also dreamed of astral traveling as well as "transporting" to other worlds much akin to how Edgar Rice Burroughs describes John Carter's movement between Earth and Barsoom (Mars).  Perhaps the weirdest along these lines are the ones where I can jump to great heights/or great distances, and run at incredible speeds with a skipping motion.  Stuff is just weird, ya know?

I've had hunting dreams- where I was hunting with primitive tools.  Atlatl, sling, stone tipped spear, as well as engaging in warfare with a bronze tipped spear, buckler, and pilum while wearing a kilt, tunic, and sandals.  Really strange.

But by far the absolute weirdest- a recurring nightmare that I experienced in my childhood, as a teen, as well as after my first and second and third divorces- yet this very same nightmare evolved into something otherworldly and lifechanging in a good way after meeting Sonja.  I haven't had it since that "change".

Heh, I've even dreamed about vehicles I've owned, particularly my 71 VW Bus and 66/69/70 Baja Bug (69 pan and engine, 70 body and rear trailing arms, 66 front end)

I dream about food once in a great while. At least one of those times I was on a month-long paddling journey, losing weight just like most others on such trips, and probably was still hungry when I went to bed. The other times didn't have any obvious cause.

Flying high above cities by making sidestroke swimming motions has been a repeat dream theme of mine ever since I can remember. Motive in those dreams is always an urgent need to escape from turmoil, and I have these dreams when, in fact, I want to get way above things and see what's going on. Sometimes the flight into a dark night sky seeing everything get smaller and smaller (literally flying into space) takes on such a surreal beauty that upon waking, I try to fall asleep just to reenter that scene. Funny how in these dreams, WIND always pushes me around.

Only this morning I told my husband I have dreamt about having every car or truck I owned stolen. Sometimes this dream is about one I had a very long time ago. I always wake up in terror, so glad it was only a dream.

Escaping turmoil, having a car stolen, running for my life in various kinds of labyrinths, being unable to get away from my parents' house long after I actually did...lots of repeated negative themes.

Wow... I don't know if I'm happy or sad about rarely remembering my dreams, or not dreaming at all.
Now I do remember coming back after a surgery one time.. There were three doors (gates) above me that I could hear faint voices behind. I chose one of the doors to pass through and I awoke to a nurse in the recovery room. I often wonder what may have been behind the other 2 doors.

When it comes to dreams, I often end up eating my words. [chuckling]

Some have said that what you know doesn't happen in your dreams is something you are wishing for (or a side of you is).

If that is true then there are some scary people running around that have some gory nightmares.

Betty Lou woke up crying and really depressed this morning.
Apparently she had a really bad dream about Rambo. In her dream we badly mistreated Rambo and finally gave him to a guy that did him even worse by making him fight.
She couldn't get past the feeling of guilt even though it was a dream.

I've had dreams where I've been shot and feel the bullets go in. I've had dreams where I've been stabbed and again feel the blade sink in.  Haven't had those in decades.  I've had the dream of being able to fly.  I've had dreams where I can play a piano or a guitar it seems so easy that I'm amazed everyone doesn't do it.  Never had a dream about eating. I really don't dream much anymore,  at least according to my fitbit watch that follows (?) my sleep. I only get maybe 30 minutes of deep sleep a night.

I don't think I could wear one of those watches. Knowing about my poor sleeping habits would keep me awake at night..   :o

There was a guy who dreamed he ate a giant marshmallow.  When he woke up, his pillow was gone.

I used to dream of flying often.  I would will myself skyward, with as little effort as swimming.  What often spoiled that was needing to avoid power lines.

I seem to have lots of dreams about being at my old job.
And it was the best job I've ever had.  Machining parts.
 long story.

When I was thinking about going back to work I use to get nightmares about doing it. I get there and I couldn't find any of the supplies to do my job. It was a nightmare for me. I have a very strong work ethic and hate when I can't getter done. Use to drive me crazy at Boeing to be stopped because something needs to be done and it wasn't in my job description.🤬🤬🤬🤬

Color here... for example, blood is red.

If I have a nice dream I don't remember... but nightmares rattle me for a VERY long time.

Fortunately Betty Lou hasn't had an episode II of the Rambo dream. She said she was sketchy about going to bed the next night for fear that she would.

I'm diagnosed with REM sleep disorder. It basically means my body attempts to act out my dreams. At times it makes for some very interested nights. I take medication to  try and control the episodes which interferes with my REM sleep leaving me in a almost constant state of brain fog due to not enough quality sleep time.

Some folks with chronic cannabis consumption over years get this... brain waves during daylight hours resemble REM waves while night time brain waves rarely get to stage 5 waves.  It's correlated with the vivd dreams that the same folks report after a week or so of abstinence.  Dreams are trippy, day or night [chuckling].
