I'm a little curious how a CO2 bb pistol with a three and a half inch barrel can produce velocities up to 400 fps when for example the spring piston Red Ryder is lucky to get 275 fps. Also, my Daisy Multi stroke pneumatic 35 gets more fps on two pumps than a RR. Granted, the CO2 carts add an extra expense, but it seems you get a good deal of punch.

In a nutshell CO2 keeps expanding perhaps well after it has left the barrel.

Someone could probably explain all the details of what's going on in a spring piston better than I, but I'd say --
CO2 has ~1100 psi gas waiting to bust loose, the spring piston starts at zero, works it's way up to xxxx? psi.
I'll bet the CO2 pistol is "wasting" a lot of gas to get those fps-- pushing at ~1100 psi most of the way down the barrel.
The pump up Daisy is starting at pretty high pressure too, but not wasting as much air as the CO2 pistol, since it has a ~18 inch barrel to fill, more time for BB to use the gas, more time to speed up along the way.
So, in a nutshell, "wasted gas" to push it harder while it's still in that short barrel.

Test the same model of pistol, one with short barrel and one with long barrel, using the same kind of BBs?

I have a CO2 pistol with a 7 inch barrel, it only gets about 400 FPS if it’s hot and I shake it a bit.
Are you reporting that your test results show 400 FPS or marketing bragging states 400 FPS?

I have a few bb co2 pistols, don't think I have ever chronograph any of them, was more comparing a Daisy RR with a spring and barrel gets 275 fps compared to the energy that you can get from a short barrel and CO2 in a pistol. Just curious how co2 is very eficient in a small package. Or how easy it can be to get close to 500 fps with a Crosman 2240 co2 pistol is 22 caliber.

So your question is really why is the Red Rider so wimpy. The answer is that the Red Rider has a small compression chamber and a weak spring. Minimal gains can be made with a slightly stronger spring, but too much spring will most likely break the cocking mechanism or the trigger.
