Title: Unwrapping Shipped Airguns
Post by: Ronno6 on December 29, 2024, 09:12:59 PM
I KNOW all the "PRO" arguments, so.........

But, I really hate unwrapping shipped airguns.........
People treat them like mummies....multiple wrapping layers, each one taped up before the next one is wrapped on....

Sometimes it takes 15-20 minutes to unwrap without causing damage to the gun.

OK. I'm done......pile it on.............

Is it better to over wrap, increasing the difficulty of unwrapping and minimizing the possibility of shipping damage, or to under wrap, making it easier to unwrap but also increasing the possibility of shipping damage?

As I said, I am aware of the pros.......
Sure, it is better to over protect.
But there should be a happy medium.......
Not every layer of wrap requires loads of tape.....Maybe even NO tape at all...
Where is the wrapping gonna go inside a tight box???

It is one thing if the shipped gun is one that I have purchased.....if I damage it in the un-packing, then that is on me.

But, it is quite another issue if it is a rifle to be repaired. I must exercise a higher level of care.
I do not charge much for repairs, so I hate spending repair time on unwrapping......

Some owners take it to an art form...

LOL!  I know you ain't talking about me!  I think I sent you five or six springers all jammed in the same box once and I just shoved the last one I sent you in with some bubble wrap and then stuffed some parts in loose with it.

You will notice that I'm a little obsessive about taping the box up though.  It can rattle around in there but it ain't getting out. :D

I own a plethora of sharp knives, of which I enjoy using every chance I get. I've yet to ever taken more than a few minutes to unpackage anything, and I get a lot of packages! So, this would be a non-issue for me.
I appreciate people who care enough and willing to take the time, to pack my newly acquired property safely.

I have to wonder..
If someone were to send a rifle in for repair packed as you described how do you think they would expect it to be packed when you send it back?

I have bought Ebay guns wrapped in all kinds of stuff even old socks. Not sure they made any money after shipping.

"Blue Painters" tape is a blessing for the packaging on the gun whether butchers paper or bubble wrap .
But I always use "packing" tape  on the box itself.

To make it easy for people to open, I'm going to start using chewed bubble gum to seal boxes from this point on.

A sharp razor knife sure makes unpacking anything easier. You don’t have to press down hard to cut tape/packing material, making it less likely to damage whatever you’re unpacking.

Heck, yeah!!!

The hardest decision is which one will be that day's edc.

This is my new favorite! Super light, compact, very sharp, one handed opening/closing, only $5. Liked it so much, I went back to Walmart to buy 2 more......just because!
No airgun related packaging stands a chance!

I discovered why old geezers ALWAYS carry a pocket knife.  No teeth. :(

All the items I have received from Ron were very carefully packed.  In fact the Elm stock he made for my Crosman 2200 was wrapped up like a mummy. . . . . . .

Ron it's a pet peeve of mine also and I don't care for a lot of tape either. I had a taped box arrive yesterday with another taped box inside it so two boxes to cut open. I guess the 2nd was taped to prevent USPS from getting into it in case they cut through the 1st one to check what was inside?  ::)

1st world problems I know but still annoying.

It truly is!

You guys should order pellets from Amazon. You'll love their lack of shipping  protection! Lol

I just used white duct tape on bubble wrap for a long, fragile object I am sending across the country. With a square of pellet tin packing foam inside one end, plus a neoprene vest for added cush. But on the outside of the box, shipping tape to minimize the Ma-and-Pa-Kettle look.

I'd much rather have to cut away lots of protection than find damaged goods!!!

I'm a gambling man myself.  I like to live life on the edge.  I order stuff from Midway USA!  Three tins of pellets and a scope in one (thinly) padded mailing envelope. :o

Bout time to roll the dice again! :D

X they've been bad for years at not properly padding items and I've left numerous complaints about it as well and I know many others have too yet they still do it.

I get a ton of stuff from Amazon, I'm very familiar with their packaging practices. Most of the time, I am content. But, yes, I loathe when my packages are not well protected, but this thread is about the opposite of that. I'm more than happy to spend extra time "unwrapping" if it more than assures that my product is safe and unscathed.

 Extra packing?  I don't mind a bit.
I have had stuff come that was just bouncing around in an "oversize" box.
