Title: What did you get for Christmas?
Post by: Sqrl Klr on December 25, 2024, 10:30:02 AM
We don't do gifts anymore as we have what we need and I got enough gifts as a kid to last two life times so I'm good with it. We know Brett already got a kick butt bracelet! What else did you guys score?

We get each other some little goodies for under the tree, and then we will  hit the store in a couple of weeks.
We try to do "Needs before Wants".
But I did get a little surprise, a RC Drone for flying around inside. ;D

Betty Lou and I just get something useful. This year it was the hydraulic log splitter. After splitting up every log we had on the place over the past 2 days we went into the shop.. she tended the woodstove as I tinkered with airguns. "The Outpost" was streaming on the TV.
Boss laid on the floor chewing up sticks.
We are both very happy with the purchase.

With all that's been going on this year at our house, we decided to tone it down... and told the kids the same.
Got a couple of gift cards. That is all we requested / expected/ wanted
But this morning I found some "Santa" left me a gift on the front porch!

The former Sheriff West called Betty Lou and I this morning to wish us Christmas greetings. I reminded him to call Killer then I gave him time to do so and I called Killer. I was surprised to find him in exceptional spirits. Killer has a very deep rumble laugh and it's great to hear it.
These are the special gifts that are priceless.

I ask for the same thing every Christmas and I never get it.   Wife always says she'll get me one as soon as they make one large enough for me to fit into or after they pave our dirt road.

All I want for Christmas is a red corvette.

Sometimes I have to get myself something for the holidays.

> .177x24" Crosman barrel

>Pinty 3-9x32mm AO RF

The .177 barrel is for a C3622 that I am still waiting on for delivery, to be converted into a C3677x24"

Out of the blue someone gave me a S&W model 317 and a nice piece of Bianchi gun leather to go with it.  .I'm "re-gifting" it.  This will be the memsahib's new concealed piece and I can get my 9mm back. ;D

Mom gave me six pairs of socks and a thousand dollars.

Guess I can't complain about the socks.  8)

So far until visiting the rest of my family tomorrow.
Some dremel accessories and bits, a pair of pants, and my mom's husband gave me a bag of old fishing reels.
The mid 60's Mitchell 302 Salt water is the only one that's really a true vintage reel of the quality I have interest in.
The early 90's Shimano's are interesting, but while I'll get some joy out of servicing them they will absolutely not meet my quality standards.
Composite bodies, plastic and pot metal parts inside...etc but I will enjoy witnessing the transformation through servicing even if I don't think they're made well enough to be worthy of my time.

We stopped doing Christmas gifts many moons ago. The occasion feels no different from when there was gifting.

No New Year's eve celebration, either. If we could pick a genuine new-year celebration, it would be the vernal equinox with some kind of appropriate, noncommercial ritual such as planting a special shrub. It would be linked, six months later, to a complementary ritual noting the start of autumn.

I "took delivery" of a Rossi 92 and a pre-buyout all stainless Marlin LA, both in .357.  Sonja immediately claimed the Rossi as hers.   ::)  I doubt I've ever felt such a nice trigger as the perfection on that Rossi.  Seriously- the trigger is superb!

Both are sweet little firecrackers- and are playing-card-accurate at 50 yards free-hand.  In fact, the overall "feel" while configured wildly different from my Leshiy, are ergonomically very similar in how they actually shoulder..  Short/compact, solid, accurate.  I really love carbines.

Both powderburners really make me want to drop the coin on a Hatsan Vectis and a Lobo Mustang.  I just cannot get enough lever-action action to satisfy :D

OOooooohhh... Sonja saw me type this and asked, "What's that?" referring to the Barnett Phantom.  Over the time of my typing this it has already been wishlisted in our Amazon Cart.

I got myself a Rossi 92 SS 357 (20" barrel) for Christmas a few years back to add to my lever gun collection.  It's a great gun and accurate.  Earlier this year I bought a Rossi 95 Stainless Laminate.  She is a beauty and gets sub-moa groups at 100yds.

This year I got a GX CS4 compressor for Christmas :)

I doubt I'm capable of sub-MOA with anything, but I'm willing to be my wife can eke every bit of accuracy out of that 92's action.  Smooth?  Absolutely... but the trigger itself is just... it really defies my description.  It has a 16" barrel (16.2"?).

The Marlin is really nice, too, but the action on that Rossi... whoooo boy.  Wow!

I took a little of the lucre that mom gave me and bought an NVD from a member here.  One Leaf Commander NV100.  It has a detachable monocular and a very nice daylight scope.  The Nv is pretty basic but that's what I was expecting so I ain't disappointed.  I took the monocular to work today and after work I sat and watched wildlife in the park.  Based on that experience alone the thing is worth every penny and the scope is gravy.  I saw deer and owls through the NVD.  I do a night time nature walk in the park and this thing is going to be a real boon.  I'm hoping I'll be able to spot flying squirrels with this at night too. ;D

I received a MidwayUSA gift card from my aunt and used it to buy this Ka-bar 1119 " wrench knife "
(https://i.postimg.cc/zX5rYLfs/1119-overview.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/14WTp3wB)
I've been interested since they came out a few years ago but could never really pull the trigger because I was bugged that they chose to use SS instead of the Chrome vanadium steel they  use for most of their knives.
After all this is drop forged to look like it was made from an adjustable wrench, and most adjustable wrenches are made of Chrome Vanadium tool steel.
It is just such a blatant missed opportunity on their part.

I have since had a healthy enough fill of carbon steel that I've become more accepting and tolerant of stainless steel, so I bit the bullet.

I only have one lever action gun, a Henry plain-jane H001 in .22 cal. It initially couldn't hit the broadside of a barn if I was in it.

After tearing it down completely, adding shims, reworking the trigger, lapping the barrel, it put three in the same hole at 25 yards. You know how paper curls after ... hole was smaller than .22 inches. Buttery smooth action on it.

Rossi was the lowest priced on the holiday sales flyer back then, I'll have to catch up a few decades, congrats on the 95, sub-moa is a pretty exclusive club, especially at 100 yards!

I went to the PA website today to spend a little bit more of my holiday cash.  After selecting 8 tins of pellets I had a look at their post-holiday bargains.  I found a Springfield Armory M1 carbine refurb for $84 after discounts and bought it on impulse.  I've been looking at the full auto Crosman M1's but the AV/Springfield Armory model looked a lot more authentic and it is full metal although semi auto.

As a teenager my brother had a favorite pair of shorts that he refused to get rid of, the whole rear on one side was hanging down and he used to wear athletic tights under them to keep his but from showing.
My mom was so embarrassed to be seen in public with him.

I absolutely hate wearing pants with a hole in them.
I'll deal with a little 1/4" hole , but any bigger than that and they're gone.
I won't even use them as beaters, because I have a pair of bib overalls for that.

Here is the damage. The only thing technically I have to replace is the bumper, head lights, and radiator to get it past DMV inspection. The rest is preventative maintenance for it. Since I am having to take stuff down to the frame might as well replace it now and not later.

That would be many thousands to repair at a body shop.  You are fortunate to be able to do those kinds of repairs yourself.

Let's just say the repairs were estimated at 50 to 70% of the value of the vehicle and they decided to total it. Yes, I am fortunate to be able to fix this. 30 years of fixing mangle equipment with the state has been a good learning experience for me. YT and mechanic friends have been a big help as well. I wanted to learn, got tired of being taken to the cleaners every time I had to have something fixed or not fixed.

I despise people taking advantage of other people for profit, but especially doing so with women. They'll reap what they sow. Wish you knew someone with a warm shop you could work on the van in to keep out of the cold.

I like nice knives as much as anyone but I have an incurable practical inclination.  I collect good kitchen knives for the memsahib but for myself three knives suffice.  My original Leatherman tool, a 2.5" Kershaw pocket knife and a 4.5" green river drop point.

Today my order from PA arrived with my totally frivolous Springfield Armory M1 carbine.  I was surprised.  The thing is actually fairly accurate!  It's not the BB hose I expected.  I may not gift this thing to my brother after all. :D

Thanks Gil. One of the new chicken pens will be temporarily turned into a covered work area where it will be warm and dry. I do have access to home shops but there has been drama in both places during the holidays and would rather not get in the middle of it right now. I don't put up with garbage that gets thrown at me in automotive shops, I have been known to put a few mechanics in their place real quick. Don't even get me started on service managers, they are worse than the mechanics at times. It's all good, I just take it one day at a time.

I hope you have good luck with your M1 carbine, mine just will not run.
When I first got the gun it would mostly get through 1 magazine if I shot it very slowly then it quickly got worse from there, now it will barely get a few shots before freezing up and running out of gas.
As far as I know it's not just leaking out the mag or anything,  but I cannot figure out what the problem could possibly be.

Well it is a gas guzzler for sure.  Reviews say 40 shots per cart.  This seems about right based on the two magazine's worth of BB's and a few dry shots I fired tonight.  This one ran perfectly and the accuracy really was much better than I expected.  Sorry to hear that yours did not.  It's a shame because the gun is a pretty darn close facsimile of the real thing and fun to shoot too.  I suspect your problem is the magazine since it seems to contain all the pressure controlling bits.  PA has magazine's for $25 and there's a 25% off coupon right now.  I'm thinking about ordering a couple more magazines.

Had another thought.  The valve spring is pretty light on this gun.  You can burp air from the cart by pressing on it with your thumb.  The "firing pin"  bears on the valve stem slightly if the gun is not cocked.  That slight pressure might be enough to make your gun leak especially if the valve is bad to start with.  I can't explain the other issues but it reinforces my idea that it's your magazine.

Sam same here I only have a few knives. Now guns is a different story.

Kris been there too and managers usually are former mecha-necks that worked their way to the top. I admire their physical ability to do that hard work for a living as I could not but I can do without the ones that don't do good work.

Not normally a knife kinda guy but I inherited collection and I have many, many more knives than airguns. I have a few out for display and a couple at work stations and in tool boxes but the bulk of them are stored away. Killer was a knife nut. We still get knife magazines in the mail.

Funny thing all the knives I have ever owned, except the last set I bought on closeout at Tractor supply, were given to me ???

I like nice knives as much as anyone but I have an incurable practical inclination.  I collect good kitchen knives for the memsahib but for myself three knives suffice.  My original Leatherman tool, a 2.5" Kershaw pocket knife and a 4.5" green river drop point.

I'll look into that.

I have far more knives than airguns, because I got my first pocket knife ad first airgun at the same time and knives are far easier to acquire.

When it come to airguns, for me the saying rings true that they don't make 'em like they used to.
When it comes to traditional knives, companies like Case & Buck absolutely do.
Plus knives take up less space, tend to cost me much less than any vintage airguns I'm after, and I can carry a knife or pairing of knives for the week.
With airguns it depends on the weather, if I have time, how tired I am after work...etc.

I love airguns and traditional knives equally,  but knives are an easier more convenient hobby to enjoy regularly.

After playing with mine for 24 hours I understand your problem.  My magazine is very finicky.  I'm not sure what the trick is yet but I've already dumped five carts trying to get it to seal properly.  Sometimes it will seal right up.  The next cart will dump as soon as it is pierced or it will leak slowly.  Some carts will seal after several seconds of leaking or several shots are fired.  Last night I wasted a couple of carts fiddling with it.  The third cart I installed leaked for ten seconds or so and then stopped after two shots.  This morning it was still holding pressure.  If it gets warm enough today I will chronograph it.

Killer was a knife nut.

Well with a name like that I'm not surprised. Glad I never ran into him to hone his carving skills so to speak.

Might try a trick I used to get a sticky CO2 valve to seal, I took a spray can of light silicone with the little straw, put the straw up to the CO2 piercing pin to form a seal, started spraying silicone and pulling the trigger, to circulate some oil to clear any crud that may have been preventing a seal, the gun works flawlessly since. To clear the oil
I put the air compressor nozzle to the valve and fired till no mist blew out. Gamo p 25 was the test subject.
