Title: Who casts NOE .22 slugs?
Post by: Blowpipe Sam on November 29, 2024, 03:34:19 PM
At least a couple of years back a member here (I've forgotten who) sent me some cast NOE .22 slugs to try in my pumpers.  None of my pumpers liked them so I stuck them on a back shelf and forgot about them.  Yesterday I found them while looking for something else (of course) and thought I might try them in my Crosman 3622.  I shot three through the 3622 today and they performed pretty well.  Well enough to make me think that the Crosman might make a decent slug shooter.
So who is casting NOE .22 pellets?  Does anyone remember sending me some?  If you do please PM me.  I'd like to know what weight and mold these are.

Has anyone tried cast slugs in a 3622?  Any luck?

I have cast 22 WC and slugs from NOE, but not their hunter pellets.  The wad cutters are tough to cast but shoot well.  The 217-30 slugs cast much easier and are good shooters.  My hollow point slugs drop at 28.4 grains and give a bit of a push when fired.  Kind of fun really.  I shoot the slugs in my GK1 at 840 fps (44 FPE).

NOE only has two slugs in .217/.218 that would fit a Crosman, the conical shaped ones:

and the beer-barrel shaped ones:

Nominally 25 and 30 grains, respectively.
What shape are yours?

I cast with those molds, but in tin so my slugs are only 15 and 20 grains.  Still they do OK in some guns.  Another one to try if your 3622 likes 'em heavy is MP Mold's 5.52mm, which casts a nominal 35gr. lead... artillery shell.  In tin they are still pretty heavy at 23 grain and shoot well enough from my Dragonfly multi-pump.

I’ve been interested in casting my own pellets for some time.  I’m still intimidated by some of the technical aspects.  If either the 3622 or my new Beeman Raider liked cast projectiles it would definitely encourage me to start casting.
The slugs I have are conical with a small hollow point.  Ring any bells?

Yep, that mold comes with three sets of pins, one for a flat nose, one for a cup point and the longest for a deeper hollow cavity point.
If they like that cup point they might also like the deep hollow point.

Every NOE mold I've seem come with 3 sets of pins.

I think it was you James.  If it was thank you!  I’ve only shot three of them through the 3622 but they made a nice little group at 20 yards.  I wanted to fine tune the zero before I shot any more and I’m glad I did because I think the Buck Rail moderator is clipping the Piranhas I used for zero.  The weather shut me down before I got a chance to rectify that but I hope to do a definitive test in a few days.

I have had mixed results with Buck Rail moderators, and accuracy on a couple of my Crosman plinker guns. Just thought I would put that out there. POI dead on with out, and 8" low and left or the like with, still group ok but would of had to max out the scope to do it.

If Richard Morrill cast them for you, I now have the mold.  It is a NOE 218-25-RF-D6 Cavity RG2.  About 22.5gr.  I can size them in four different diameters:
