Title: Hunting Jocasse Gorges S. Carolina
Post by: trekkerx on November 27, 2011, 02:56:27 PM
It`s been awhile since I posted here on the GTA but I do stop in & see what is going on from time to time.Well last year I bought a used Career 707 in .22 from Pyramyd Air.This rifle has a single air tube much like the one on a Career Infinity.I really liked the rifle when I got it but the accuracy was awful. No matter what pellet the accuracy just wasn`t their.I did some work on the rifle & it helped but still wasn`t great.I ended up narrowing it down to a bad barrel, don`t really know what was up with it but would not shoot the way I wanted it to.I bought a 24" Lothar Walther barrel then sent it to Will Pyatt at Saddle Mtn..Will can thank Nomadic Pirate for that.Nomadic bragged on him so much I had to see it for myself.NP was right about Will. Now the 707 gets dime size groups @ 50 yards with 32 grn. Eun Jins. The longer barrel also enhanced the power some.On high power with those 32 grn. Eun Jins leave the barrel @ 1250 fps.Of course I don`t shoot it that high but turn it down to get about 900 fps. That`s enough talk about the rifle.
I took the 707 out on a hunt for the first time ever yesterday & was vey impressed!I didn`t leave the house until about noon & got to my destination a little after 1.I left the truck & started up a ridge I have never hunted & was thinking the whole time that I probably would be lucky to see anything.Well the ridge was steep & thick and a cliff on my left (100 ft drop) with Mtn. Laural, Rhododendron & a mix a different type of oaks & pine, some scattered hemlock& cedar. After about 20 min. I begin to hear the barks and purrs of nutter.I continued on slowly climbing and looking for my prey.I could see two of`em on the ground about forty yards ahead but could not get a clear shot at`em.I was trying to be quite but is impossible with so many leaves on the ground.Well they they scattered as soon as I took another step. They ran up a tree & begin to bark & purr that put off a warning to all other nutters in the forest that I was coming. It sounded like a hundred of`em started in.I just dropped down on my knees behind a tree & started scanning the trees & ground in front of me.I begin to see them everywhere so I took aim at the first one at about 30 yrds. let the safety off & placed my finger on the trigger & bam it went off way before I was ready & I missed.I forgot how light I had set this trigger & Will also had worked on it so the trigger is really light.Well the nutter didn`t even know I had shot at`em.Ok now shot 2 I was ready my target was still there & I lightly placed my finger on the trigger & put the X on his head & bam he took that 32 grn. to the fuse box & dropped like a sack of taters. Found another high in the tree about 60 yrds. out & did a repeat of nutter #1.Saw another on my right close by & he was barking & flippin his tail & just callig me all kinda names. He took a 32 grn. to the face & hit the ground doin the kickin chicken.I`m still lookin around & most nutters are headin out quickly bailin off that cliff & runnin for high ground & lookin for a hole to get in.I was funny to watch 2 nutters try to get in a hole at the same time. Now I`m thinkin I need to round these three up or I won`t remember where they are.I `m walkin around gathering my prey & went to the one I shot the farthest out.The tree he was in was right on the edge of that cliff so he had to of went all the way to the bottom.I never found him.I looked all over even walked back down to the tree I was at when I shot him & looked to make sure I was lookin under the right tree & I was.I never recovered him.Now this whole time I`m walking around gathering my prey there is this one nutter that has not shut up yet.It has been at least 30 -45 min. since all the action started. So I begin to hunt for him & shut him up.Sure enough I hone in on the branch he`s on & bam he took a 32 grn. to the face like the others.I continued to hunt that ridge until about 5 0`clock & thought I better start headin back to the truck.Seen a couple more on the way back but just watched & saw 2 that got in the nest together it was almost dark & bed time for those guys.It was a fun & productive hunt & really enjoyed being out.I mean it was 60 degrees.Last year this same week was cold & rainy. The pics. just show five but harvested six but I had already skint him out before I decided to take there picture & post on the GTA for all to see.

Brother, you need to go hunting more often.  How many more rifles do you have that want to go hunting?  I think you have that 707 dialed in and we would like to see more hunting pics and more hunting stories.  Thanks for sharing.
