Went for a short walk in the woods yesterday with my friend Cody. He had the Daisy 880 and spotted a squirrel on the ground 15 yards away. He shot twice at the nutter and missed. I told him to hand it over and see how its done. The squirrel hadn't even ran off...I guess he could see where we were (behind some brush).
Well I waited for a minute until the nutter stopped moving around and finally left me with a shot at his neck/chest with him poking around the side of the tree. I steadied my aim and let the Crosman Destroyer Ex fly out the 880 with 15 pumps behind it. I heard the pellet connect and the squirrel immediately ran down the tree and fell into the groundcover face down. I walked up to the nutter and could hear I hit him square in the lungs as he was choking on his own blood. I loaded up another pellet and gave him one to the top of the head just to end it quicker. Upon a closer look he was a healthy fat male.
This is nutter number two for the 880. And a FIRST nutter with a Destroyer Ex pellet. I'm happy with this gun still.
After skinning him and searching for the pellet I found it inside of his right lung next to his heart. To my surprise the pellet had actually expanded more than I thought it would. Penetration was only through the chest into the lung.

The recovered pellet beside a pellet shot into clay..and next to that an unshot pellet.

Recovered pellet besides Destroyer Ex.

i cant see the pics, but if i had a guess, id say they are completely expanded out to .22 cal and marked up from hitting bones.
-
They should be expanded to that with a whopping 15 pumps! You're only supposed to pump it 10 times max. Any more could destroy the pump. Good shot either way. ;)
-
I understand more pumps can destroy it...I've just been slowly testing the limits and accuracy with 15 pumps. There definitely is a power increase over 10 pumps i know of from penetration testing.
So far it still holds air and groups well. So for hunting I use 15 pumps every now and then. If something breaks than its rebuild time.

Nice shooting!

I have an 880 and can't believe how accurate the little gun is. It does great work for close in starling work, which should start any day now with the cold weather were having.
-
that's alot of smash!
-
wow beautiful looking squirrel
-
Good shot

Fat looking little rascal. I like using my 880 as well, I use JSB predators and they work well also.

How many shots have you fired it past recommended pressure so far? Keep up the testing and let us know how it holds up or how many shots it took to finally blow it.

nice shooting!
i have an 880,the old all metal receiver kind,i use for pesting.very accurate
well over 500 shots at 15 pumps nothing wrong yet.2 tins of dex and 1 tin of crosman pointed
i am not advocating it either. every gun is different
-
Nice shooting and thanks for the expanstion pics.
Seeing how the pellet only made it to 1 lung, and did not get imbedded under the skin on the opposite side, or go through the squirrel, I would pump the 880 15x too! :) Looks like that is just the right power @ 15yds for the big tough Fox squirrels you have.
PS.
Did you really use that big knife to skin it?
-
Thanks guys...and I was really anxious to find the pellet after the shot to show you guys. I haven't seen many real world results with the Destroyer/Ex pellet.
Sqr Klr, As for the 880 it has seen about 20 shots at 20 pumps...and 200-300 shots with 15 pumps so far...still going strong. I regularly lube the pump tube after a couple hundred shots.
only1harry, Yes I did use that knife to skin him. At the time I was in a hurry and that was the closest knife I could find so I sharpened it quickly with a flat file after I washed it. To tell you the truth, That is actually my old bow making knife... that knife has cut down multiple 2-3 inch saplings from the woods and roughed out a handful of bows haha. It's been through *(&^ too.
What kind of knives do you use to skin?
-
as long as you dont let the gun heat up during pumping the seals will last longer
pump slow and keep piston oiled!
-
Hey az is your 880 new or old like 1377's?
Harry I guess it just depends on the size of the squirrel and pellets used because my 880 will send pellets through or stop them just beneath the skin in medium sized nutters with RWS domes.
-
I bought mine the summer of '10. I don't get pass throughs on squirrels.
-
Terrific expansion out of those Destroyers, and that is one gorgeous and huge squirrel.
He looks like a weightlifter.
;)
