Title: A very nice 140 on the bay
Post by: bantam5s on October 25, 2024, 08:29:20 PM
I don't think I've ever seen a standard Crosman 140 with this forearm shape, I thought they only made them this way for Sears.

Lovely gun.  I don't conduct business on the bay but that is surely tempting. :(

If I wasn't on the hunt for a specific gun already I'd snatch it up, because they offered it to me for $170.

I've got no experience fixing up pumpers.  If I did, I might spring for it as it looks like the kind of classic I'd want.

They are not that difficult to work on.  The quad seal inside the valve cap is the hardest part and if you have a dental pick it's a cinch.  IMO they are easier to work on than springers since you don't need a spring compressor.  Reseal kits are available on line and they are reasonably priced.

Despite my apparent resolve to stop buying guns and focus in on what I got, this looks like too sweet a deal.  I am having some trouble with ebay when I make an offer.  Maybe that's a sign.  That Cap lists this as his favorite gun (or similar to it) tips me over the edge. So I may try again on a computer later today rather than this pad and see if ebay lets me proceed with an offer.

That's a beautiful rifle, I hope you get it Rion. Mostly so that I don't cave in to the voices in my head telling me I need another!
Pics please, if you get it

You should.
I have a 1965 model 140 and love it, they're a very simple reliable no nonsense utilitarian kind of gun that has decent power and is pretty accurate.
Just set it and forget it, sight it in and have confidence that it'll always be able to get the job done.

My crosman 100 redone by mike baker is accurate and powerful enough,  I think I do better with the 100 with stock peep than I do with my dragonfly mk 1 peeped.  This 140 looks bigger than the dragon fly.  Also, no peep just standard knotch site.

I also see a silver streak went up for sale for 250 and a hurricane. Looking hard at the hurricane, but don't know much about it. The p1 is my go to pistol.

I've been looking to get a 1400 for awhile now and was watching one on Ebay that was listed for $130
Yesterday I got an offer from the seller for $80 and somebody went and payed full price for it before I could accept the offer.

That ebay 140 does look nice, but it is a 3rd variant from the late 60's, not 50's.  Some had adjustable triggers, but the safety is a tell-tale sign it is a 3rd variant.  I have quite a few of the 140's in all the variants, and they are well made great rifles.  The 1400's are a bit heavier but perhaps even better with a little more velocity, at least my two 1400's do.

As mentioned, the hardest re-seal part is knowing the quad seal exists, and how to replace it!
The other trick is knowing that the plug at the end of the bolt, has a recessed nylon washer that holds it in.  Always look for pry marks around that plug where someone removed the screw then tried to pry it out with the washer still in place.

Most are dated with a stamp either in the wood between the forearm and stock, or stamped on the rear of that plug.

Great shooters.

Sorry if this info is obvious but thought I'd post for newer enthusiasts exploring the threads.

Yeah it's definitely very obviously a 3rd variant.
I did not know about the potential date stamps in the stock though.
As far as the stamp on the plug, that I did know and my 140 happens to be a 1965 example.
