Title: BB Trap
Post by: Brazos on September 08, 2024, 10:42:02 PM
Coming to the experts on this, don’t let it go to your head.  I just bought one of the classic rifles on my list of rifles to buy.  The Daisy 499B.  Winter will be here soon and I want to set up a range in the spare bedroom that has plenty of room for a 5M range.  I have done searches on BB traps and to my amazement haven’t really found anything.  When I think I have found something it mostly talks about pellets. Pellets are lead and BBs are steel.  Two different animals.  I can build something or will buy it. I want something I can hang on the wall and shoot at 5M bb rifle paper targets.  Suggestions please.  Thanks.

Build a shadow box with a piece of steel in the back of it. Stuff it will old folded up jeans. When you start hearing bbs hit the steel, open it up and shake the bbs out of the jeans and repack it. The great thing about bbs is that a magnet will collect them and most can be reused.

I use the Priority Mail boxes from USPS.
Fill them with plastic garbage bag.
When shot up tape with duct tape and shoot some more.
When you can’t tape anymore, dump out the BBs and shoot them again in a new box.

you are getting good advice from the pros. Only thing about bbs is they can bounce back and you need to watch for that. I am currently having fun with new to me 499B also, and what I have found if you are shooting through paper, it must be thin, cuz the 499 shoots really slow. Anything inside that can stop the bb is good. Cardboard box with a hole cut square for the paper target, can get messy as you shred the box. Be careful don't shoot your eye out!!

The best BB quiet BB trap, especially for the low powered 499 and all the other daisy spring BB shooters is to have a thick folded towel or other cloth draped over a wooden dowel.

I made this when I got my 499 earlier this year.

That’s pretty simple looking, makes sense, and cheap.

A cardboard box and any stick or even piece of rope / shoelace...etc will also work.

I used this clear plastic container because I wanted light to come in so I could see my targets better , but it's not necessary.

I kinda like the clear plastic to be able to see what's going on inside.

It really does work out quite well.
My problem with it was that little shelf I glued there so I could shoot at these generic scrabble pieces I got from the craft section of the dollar store, but I extended my distance one day and hit the edge of the lid too many times damaging it.
Yeah the 499 isn't particularly powerful but it'll do more than people give it credit for.
I hear people say you need to use thin paper, but I have no problem shooting through these B-C stick on bullseyes and the paper with my 499 which probably shoots a bit slower than average since I slathered the spring in grease to eliminate some buzz.
I think if I was to remake this I'd glue some EVA craft foam around the window so any misses wouldn't damage it.
I'd also use a better container made from.a less brittle plastic.

I built a bb trap today out of wood.  I put a dowel rod at the top to hang a bath towel.  I stained it and it’s ready to spray poly on it.  I want it to look decent as it will hang on the wall in my house.  I need to make a faceplate for it.  I ordered some 12 bull 5M BB targets.  When I have the targets in hand I will come up with a faceplate idea.  I also want to add some sort of funnel in the bottom.  Still thinking thru the funnel idea.  I seems like I could drill a hole in the bottom big enough to fit a plastic coke bottle, I could put a wine cork in the top/inside the target frame.  When I wanted to drain the bb’s I could stick the neck of the plastic bottle in the hole, pull the wine cork, and drain the bb’s in the bottle.  Or maybe put a magnet in the bottom of the frame and gather the bb’s up that way.  When I get it all done I will post some pictures.

I just came up with this portable BB trap today.

I started with this old first aid kit case that I found at goodwill for a buck at goodwill a few years ago.

A wooden dowel across the top to hang a pant leg, and a scrap of 1×4 across the bottom that pivots out on a pair of screws to catch the BB's

The only problem was the gap at the bottom, that was easily fixed by a flap of duct tape like the draft guard on the bottom of a door.

The targets are held on by folding the top edge and using a magnet.

With a flat bottom you'll probably find BB's along the edges or in the corners requiring shaking which would mean removing it from the wall.

I'd make a funneled bottom, or make a removable tray / door of some kind.

A magnet down the bottom will catch your BBs.

My only concern with magnets and the 489 which I have not yet tested is the slow gravity feed, I am worried that the BB's could become magnetized and resist falling naturally down the barrel.
If you're using a wooden ramrod it wouldn't matter if this could happen or not.
Now that I think about it actually I might start using one because I've had a number of BB's that just didn't really want to roll down the barrel.

Pretty much finished.  Just need to use it and tweak as needed.  A bath towel folds and fits perfectly hanging from the dowel rod inside.  Lucky on that as I based the size off the target, not a towel.  As an afterthought I wish I would have incorporated some sort of rifle hanger for the 499.  I have been thinking of ways to retrofit something.  I did not build a funnel.  I think I will drill a 3/8”-1/2” angled hole in the bottom back corner and plug it with a wine cork.  When I need to empty BBs I can just tilt the trap and pour them out.

I'm new to this 499 game. One thing I have found is that shot tubes are extremely important, good to have extras on hand. I get the best accuracy out of a tube that the bb slowly slides through. You can test it outside the gun by dropping bbs down the tube and time the fall. OF course the best bbs in quality also helps. You also don't want a shot tube that bbs get stuck in.

I think it's the BB's, because it I've only been having this issue occasionally most recently and if I retry a couple times eventually the BB will roll down.

Most of my BBs are slow to get down there to the magnet.  Occasionally I have to slap the butt stock a few times to get them to break loose and to the magnet.  I am using the Avanti precision ground shot.

Yep that's exactly how it is for me occasionally.
I can tap the butt on the carpeted floor or dump the bb out and drop it down again.

I just took a box and stuffed it with old clothes. Then I taped it shut. Seems to work pretty well

That'll definitely stop BB's .
They're only good for paper punching but they'll do.
