Title: Dragon claw..sam yang
Post by: Charly45 on August 03, 2024, 10:33:57 AM
Morning all,
Just traded for a older sam yang claw in .50.
Gun is beautiful, well balanced and holds air great.did some open sighting in yesterday with some hunters supply 185g hps..at 30 yards can keep a 3 inch group. The trigger is actually  pretty decent at around 4 lbs I'd say...
My only concern so far is velocity.
I shot 18 rds.
Started at 560fps went to a hi of 635 at 10th shot and back down to 560 at 18th.
I seem to be overall weaker that it should be.
Looking for any info on what to check for?
Other than that fantastic rifle.

It may have had a tune from a tuner that is no longer with us. Factory they had the Korean Cliff tune dropping 30-50 fps per shot.

What psi did you fill it too? Seems like it was filled past the knee since you got the highest fps a few shots in. My Fire and Career both like a lower start fill pressure.

635 fps is still low, does the Dragon claw have two cocking settings?  You could shim the hammer spring to get some more power out of it or Dremel/mill out part of the valve body like this to increase the air volume in the valve.

Yes two stages pulling back..might have to shim hammer spring as you said, just wasent sure if there might be other obvious issues.
Like I said works great and is accurate just low on power...I'd like to see at least 200ftlbs.
Also do you think maybe these hunters supply 185 pellets aren't filling the bore? Causing blowby restricting fps...I got some .498 round ball coming from track of the wolf to see if that improves things..
Thanx for your responses.

Sorry was right at 3000psi when I started shooting, but can verify with compressor gauge it's close..is weird the way the bell curve is..

I usually fill.my Koreans to 2500-2700psi to avoid the low shots.

How loose are the  HS slugs? Maybe the hammer spring went bad, or if there was a shim in it it got dislodged. Cocking is still smooth?

Yes sir,very smooth.
Maybe it was left cooked for long time and weaked spring....might just pull it apart next weekend to see what's going on inside.

The previous owner may have clipped the HS to give you the bell curve you are getting instead of the Korean cliff as had been said. I thought Korean airguns were only suppose to be filled to 200 bar? I know that's what my Sumatra is filled to.

3000psi is 200bar? Right?

Don, 560-635fpe & 18 shots definitely sounds like someone clipped the hammer spring. A Dragon Claw is a hunting rifle & they’re usual good for no more than 5 shots. Tops.

Correct, you can. Fill to 3000psi. I was looking at it from a hunting perspective, I fill to the most powerful shot which on my Fire and a few other Koreans is usually lower then the max fill pressure.

This might work?

I tried to look up the spring dimensions but couldn't find them listed anywhere on the forums.

You can call Pyramyd about the spring. Not sure if he’s still at Pyramyd, but ask for Boris. He used to be their go to guy when it came to Korean airguns.

I was thinking along these same lines.. a .50 cal 185gr at 500 - 700 fps for 18 shots? That sounds like alot of total fpe to me. If I were a hunter I would also look into lowering the shot count and raising the power lever. Like Dave said... looks like someone tuned this one with higher shot count in mind.

Thanx for everyone's input!!
I saw the link to the wingshot Hammer spring.
But can't seem to find one specific for the dragon claw,I'd like have that before I open up.
Because I'm still thinking it either clipped or just weak.gun works great other than power.
Also does anyone know if there is retro fit kit for the fill prob to a quick connect?
Thanx again

Contact Jeremy, he can help you with the Drag Claw. He has the latest upgrades for them. Yes, he is in Africa. I have dealt with him in the past and never had any problems with him. He is a member here as well. Be patient when contacting him, he will get back with you as soon as he can.

I don't  know about the dragon claw, but on other Korean guns you can lube the hammer, because the hammer will compress air in front of it slowing the hammer and kill the power.

Sorry, meant to say, No lube on the hammer.

There are 2 notches when pulling the hammer.  Did you shoot it at half power?  If that is full power, then there is a problem with the hammer spring.

Yes sir full power shot threwout...how much do you guys see the aao kits for? Says 275$ on there sight..
Will be trying new hammer spring when I can find one but still want to do the upgrade.
Thanx

OK looking a little closer and found this oring not were it belongs, how much loss do you think this accounts for??
Still having trouble sourcing Orings and hammer spring..any ideas??
Thanx.
I still love the feel of this rifle.
Got some .498 round balls from track of the wolf and gained 20fps to 655...so getting there...very accurate also.

Can I just remove just  the barrel or do I need to fully disassemble the gun to change this oring?

This video should get you to the barrel to replace the o-ring. There is some amount of disassembly to replace the o-ring.

Because there's a transfer port between the barrel and the air tank you have to disassemble it. Just be very careful assembling the barrel to the transfer port. It's real easy to get it canted which will lead to air leaking and not actually pushing the projectile.
