Title: Hatsan Mod 95 breech seal cut by closing action with less than 30 shots
Post by: bbcg59 on July 19, 2024, 11:00:44 PM
I (new to beyond daisy bb guns air rifles) and have a new Mod 95 (Amazon) with less than 30 pellets through it (guessing around 25 max so far), the breech seal has a cut from a protrusion from the breech where it mates when cocked, is this normal ?  Appears to have cut outs in what looks to be a tube that was screwed into place in the breech but seems to stick out a little to much. Would simply replace seals but that appears to be an issue as well, pricey where currently I can find available but unavailable though Hatsan at a reasonable price, is this common?  The barrel does appear to be one of the good ones with good resistance through out the length of the barrel pushing a pellet. Looking to tear down and tune once I figure out constructing a spring compressor.  Thanks for any ideas on how I should proceed on the breech and seal.

Try your Amazon again?
Of course check that whatever you think cut the seal won't cut the new one.

That may be one of the Hatsan rifles with the NEW? transfer port insert. Older Hatsans have a simple drilled & chamfered hole for a transfer port. I think 4mm dia x 12mm long is normal for this rifle.

Some newer rifles (I have NOT seen one in person yet) appear to have a larger drilled & threaded transfer port designed to accept threaded inserts. The inserts are drilled to the normal OR different size holes to vary the Muzzle Energy for different country legal compliance. IF the threaded insert is not properly seated and SECURED with a THREAD LOCKING COMPOUND it may work loose and SHRED the breech seal.

I THINK this may be your problem. If YES you need to properly seat and thread-lock the insert or it will SHRED ANY new breech seal you install.

You might consider returning the rifle if this kind of maintenance/repair work is not something you want to tackle.

$9.95 for 5 seals, add S&H unless "FREESHIP" coupon code is active, out of stock now which is faily common :-(

I was waiting for breech seals awhile back and got very impatient. A fellow GTA member suggested getting some silicone tubing and MAKING my own Hatsan breech seals.

I did ...

9mm ID 13mm OD x 1m L silicone tubing from Amazon for $8.99

... and it WORKED!

That's at least 100 breech seals, if/when I need to cut more, at about 9 cent per seal.
I have NO DATA on how long the "custom" breech seal will last.
Mine does seem to work just like the Hatsan breech seal but I only have a few hundred pellets through that rifle.

The tubing I got is no longer for sale on Amazon but this appears to be a very close equivalent to what I purchased ~2 years ago...

... at about 50 cents more for a 1m length.

Good Luck!

These links are specific to the Mod125 rifle but the problems could be the SAME for Mod95 rifles with a threaded insert transfer port.

I am disappointed in Hatsan if this is something they do at the factory.
It COULD be a sloppy 3rd party modification, but realistically it is coming from the Hatsan factory :-(

I would have drilled and tapped for a more COMMON thread (NOT M7). At least around here M7 hardware is either scarce or silly EXPENSIVE.

M8 (or 5/16") hardware is much more common and reasonably priced.

I would NOT have used the "castle nut ~ phillips driver" shape as it is WEAK (prone to damage), has several sharp edges (to damage seals) and also adds unnecessary volume to the transfer port which is usually NOT a good thing in MANY spring piston rifles.

I WOULD have chosen a socket head grub screw and drilled it for the transfer port sizes needed.

or
www.amazon.com/Internal-Socket-Screws-Stainless-Steel/dp/B0CZ6YL9GT

5/16" = 0.3125" ~ M8 (screw diameter)

3/8" = 0.375 ~ 9-10 mm (screw length)

LESS prone to damage, minimal sharp edges to tear seals, minimal added volume to preserve desired/ideal transfer port volume.

Just my 2 cents (humble opinion ;-)

Judging by the number of threads I have read regarding problems with the threaded transfer port inserts I think Hatsan has made a mistake.  It certainly must have appeared to be a good move to the bean counters or they wouldn't have done it.  Economies of scale.  If the insert is made from the notoriously soft steel that Hatsan likes to make threaded stuff out of then it adds an extra layer of annoyance.

I love my Hatsans but I don't think I'll be buying anymore (famous last words). :D

I second that!! It's just not worth trying to fix it.
