Title: Stock screws.
Post by: Novagun on May 31, 2024, 03:00:58 PM
Had my Gamo Hunter out yesterday shooting a paper target. Not good but the fault was lose stock screws. I don't use lock tite but neoprene washers under the screw heads. That seems to to take up the differences in tension cased by temperature and humidity and keeps them tight. I added washers to the Gamo tightened the screws and after three settling shots all was back on target
My tightening method is to nip them up tight then tweak a bit more. Care not to crush anything except the neoprene washer. There is a good chance one side is tighter than the other.
So questions:_
1. Does it matter if the forestock screw tension is not exactly the same each side?
2. Is there benefit in using a torque wrench for the screws ?
3. How tight should the screws be?
4. How tight should the rear screw be in comparison to the rear screw.

Inch pounds is ok:_ i can convert it to nms.

Could that be over thinking it a bit?

Yes Ron could be overthinking but I don't know. I suppose i had better head to town and see if I can get a suitable wrench.

After years of not knowing how much tightening I was doing, and sometimes exaggerating.., I bought a Fat Wrench.

It is also useful for the mount/scope screws.

After you discover how much is 'just enough', you are able to repeat always the same.

Btw, the back stock screw of a Diana 350 T06 goes into the trigger house (thread).  During the not knowing period.., I ruined more than one thread and had to replace the trigger house.
