Title: Need help with an old Discovery
Post by: BmaS on May 01, 2024, 12:03:58 PM
Greetings all,
I've been away for a while.  Things have changed a lot in the airgun world in the last 10 years.  Modding Discos was all the rage back then.  I guess that fad has faded.  Regardless, I still have a 22 Cal. Benjamin Discovery and it still works, mostly.  Honestly, I stopped shooting it because it was boringly accurate!  It sat in the safe for nearly a decade.  Now it is a little leaky.  I suspect the leaks are coming from the gauge port.  I have always wanted to upgrade this unit to be able to fill to 3000psi.  There used to be some talk of reinforcing the valve with stronger screws.  That's one of the things I need your help with.  Does anyone know if those recommended screws are still available anywhere?  And, since I am upgrading the screws, it might be a good time to consider valve and pressure gauge upgrades.  Please feel free to express your best suggestions!  Thanks in advance, I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Sam

I'm sure other folks more knowledgeable than myself will chime in, but here's a starting point...

https://magnumairpower.com/

Magnum airpower has lots of goodies for various Crosman/Benji guns, including high strength screws for the Disco.

Thanks for the link, Zack.
I was browsing over there earlier, but I must have missed the high strength screws.

This should take you right to them...

I'm not sure of another source that carries them. It's been a few years since ordering from them, but when I did the product was good and arrived fairly quickly. That was when I was tinkering with a Maximus. Just a heads up, you can sheer the oem bolt handle off if you up the hammer spring tension too much...

For going to a 3000psi fill, you may want to use a Marauder valve stem. The standard valve stem for the disco/maximus is the same as what's in the 13XX guns, the poppet material is only good for 2000psi or so.

MAP screws are very proud, so you have to reduce the one, the head, for the trigger assembly area.

You know, the electric hand drill and file method.

See how I rounded off mine.

It’s a stainless Don Cothran tube that is basically a Disco.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the advice.  Yeah, I've done some redneck machining like that... too often, probably.
