Title: I love break barrels and under lever air guns.
Post by: AirGunner on March 24, 2024, 05:52:55 PM
I know we air gunners live in a pcp world but I just love the break barrels , etc. Finding the correct hold and best pellet are what I enjoy about a new springer. These guns challenge you every time you shoot them. Somtimes it's more than stacking pellet on pellet at 50 yards.

I find myself reaching for spring/gas piston guns far more often than pcp's (or pumpers & co2). They're more fun to shoot for the most part, in my opinion. I don't have to count my shots or keep an eye on pressure either. I don't spend much time shooting heavy magnum springers, but when I do they usually put a smile on my face. A few times I've chambered a standard weight .177 in my H135 Vortex for people new to airguns. That usually perks them up a tad when they take a shot. Then let them try something mild mannered and accurate to get them really hooked on AG's. Everyone has their preferences, but there's nothing better than grabbing just your air rifle, a tin of pellets and being good to go.

After the Daisy 880 that got me back into airguns around 14 years ago, my next phase was springers and vintage pumpers. I spent several years learning, tinkering and tuning springers. Then I went through the "lego" phase.
Then along came Mike Mellick's FD PCP and I went straight down the PCP rabbit hole.
I still get the springers out once a week or so and Betty Lou and I spent the day shooting pumpers yesterday but mostly days it's PCP.

With a pcp it can get boring after shooting the same hole over and over again whereas with a springer I feel like I could win the lottery if I can get 3 pellets to stack

I enjoy the challenge of springers, and I believe that if you can shoot them well, then you'll be able to shoot anything well.  I prefer underlevers over break barrels, but I have several of both.

+1 for the Springer!
While I am also a PCP / MSP guy there is a "ZEN" to shooting a nice Springer. I am certainly glad I stuck with it and didn't dismiss them after getting a POS Hatsan 95.
My R-10 and HW98 are pure awesomeness!
When I introduce a PB'er to Airguns I hand them my FWB 124.
Usually gets them Hook, line, and sinker.

I also enjoy the challenge of shooting springers and the aesthetic experience of the good ones. I have some PCPs that shoot hole in hole at my usual, shorter ranges, which gets a bit old and I have to come up with other ways to challenge myself with them.

For break barrels, I prefer a long barrel as my left arm reach is very long. Monkey long due to a twist in my spine. For underlevers, I like something sub 12 fpe to work out my right arm and provide a weighty but balanced bench shooting experience. The overall experience of the sidelever is my favorite.

I had PCP once. A QB78 Deluxe converted to PCP I bought from a friend. Put ten thru the same hole. Boring as a rock and too much trouble. Sold it.

I just bought my first Spring Under Lever Diana 460mag / in .22. I couldn't be more happy with it. Looks like and feels like a real firearm with the power to boot. I also ordered a Beeman R9 in .177( it hasn't arrived yet but, I cant wait.) ;D

I think we're going to see a massive resurgence of springers now that manufacturers have come up with magazine systems for them. To my mind, that was the main draw that PCP and CO2 guns had over springers. Now that advantage is gone, people will start to realize that they can got a good springer for the same price as a budget PCP.

I just got my first PCP last week (Beeman QB Chief 2+) and I still like my two springers. I had the Beeman Sportsman out a few weekends ago and was reminded of how hard it hits even as a .177.

You're gonna love that R9, I bought one in .22 last summer and shoot I it more than all of my other air rifles.

Is anyone's favorite rifle a .177 r9? I think maybe ed.

Seems like most .177 shooters like the hw50 over the hw95.

When I got into adult air rifles in the 80s there were nothing but spring piston. I went through lots of them and since have gone down just about every rabbit hole that I could find.

Had lot's of fun and bought and sold many airguns,  cannot even count all the different ones.

Now, I have gone back to some basics. I went bb gun crazy with a ton of them. and just lately bought a low powered springer. I like shooting the springer for the zen you must master. It's a true statement that when you master the spring gun (snatch the pebble from master's hand) you can shoot anything better.

I are ignerunt.  I have no aptitude for anything mechanical.  I have ruined many cars, boats, bikes, and guns in my time.  I periodically contemplate getting a PCP but I've learned my lesson.  I'm partial to pumpers and I keep swearing that I'm never buying another springer but they keep showing up in the mail. :o

Townshend Whelan only got it partially right.  Yes only accurate rifles are interesting.  But only fickle, challenging, frustrating rifles are addictive.

Quite right Captain Carter.

On this vein, Jim Corbett & Kenneth Anderson were both in agreement  " Be sure to make the first shot count, as you may not be fortunate enough to get another "

Best Wishes - Tom

I have an HW95 in .177 and have been very happy with it. During its initial break in I had my reservations on whether or not it was worth it but once it settled in it became a fantastic shooter. Can't say it's my overall favorite, but it's among my favorite dozen or so springers. They all have their purpose. My HW95 is my go to pesting break barrel.

If we are talking strictly .177 "Break Barrels"

I have owned an R-9 and an HW95, never had a HW50 (yet)...
But... my HW98 is a SWEET ONE.  :-*
Very close second is my FWB 124 Deluxe

My elbows are toast from years of wrenching so springers are out of the question. My last springer a TX 200 was adopted by a fellow GTA member. Pcps are it for me now.

She is a sweetie, not sure about the "short" stoke, it's all original and seems standard cocking length.
Not a power-house either, rather slow by today's standards, but accurate as can be!

I almost got the .22 R9 but seeing I have the Diana 460 in .22 I wanted to try the .177. I could see a Beemanr9 .22 in my future  ;D

It loves the cheap Crosman Premier HP's as well as the domes.
Gotta love a cheap date.  ;)

I spend a great deal of my hunting time carrying a break barrel air rifle.  I’ve got the sawed-off Crosman Fire for early season squirrel hunts from a boat.  My un-chopped Fire has killed quite a few tree rats too.  All of my Hatsans see hunting or pesting duty.  Until I eradicated the cotton mouths around here my .25 caliber Striker loaded with Crow Magnums was my go-to snake charmer.  I just received the mod 135 the last day of squirrel season this spring.  I’m really looking forward to getting out in the woods with this gun and seeing what it can do.

Does anyone else hunt with break barrels?

I'm droolin' over Scotts 98. Shot a friends awhile back, sweet.

I just ordered a Cometa 400 USC .177 spriger from Keystone Airguns. The short one with the muzzle break. Also got his tune and up-grade gold trigger. The last two rifles I bought were both used Mendozas. One made for RWS, a RM2003 dual cal. and a made for Crosman RM577. The 577 has a mucked up stock. I have a Mendoza stock from a failed project to refinish for it.
