Hi all, I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. My budget is around $100, I am not looking for anything fancy at all, this is for backyard plinking/targets only, no hunting. I'm shooting around 10-15 yards at most. The main thing is for it to be QUIET, preferably a single pump/springer. For reference, I've been using a Red Ryder with my daughter which is a great volume for the backyard but the between the power and the bbs, it's less than ideal for accuracy/fun. I'm currently trying out a Crosman 362 @ 3 pumps which has been great for power/accuracy but it has a pretty loud snap I'm not comfortable with. I'm currently 3d printing a moderator for it that might quiet it down enough but I'd prefer something without multiple pumps.
I was looking at a Diana Two Forty but I wasn't sure how loud it was and it's a little more than I was wanting to spend. It seems like all of the break barrels in this price range are 1000fps+ and pretty loud comparatively. Hoping for a recommendation I've overlooked while searching myself.

Thanks for any suggestions!

You might look into getting a Daisy 853 from the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
They are used rifles, single pump, super accurate, and get around 400 + FPS and cost $125.
I am shooting one and I can tell you I am extremely happy with it.

I appreciate the suggestion, that's an awesome program they do, I will look into it. I'm open to other suggestions as well, I prefer to purchase in a manner with a return policy in case it does not work out for whichever reason.

Do you want single pump because you hope it is quieter than multipump?
My multipump rifle is similar loudness as my single pump pistol, and dB ratings for them are almost identical.
If a multipumper is acceptable, the ubiquitous (as in Walmart sells them) Daisy 880 will easily handle that distance, using 4 to 7 pumps. I bought mine about a year ago for only $60, which included a lousy scope in the box. You can just throw that out, but the rifle itself shoots far better than I ever expected for such a low price.
It is easy to pump, if that matters. Not picky about pellets.
-
The daisy 880 on 4 pumps isn't very lout at all, and you really can't beat them for the price.

You can shoot a Daisy 880 or 901 on 2 pumps and get about 380-390 fps with cheap lead pellets and it's mouse fart quiet. That's plenty for 10-15 yards if you adjust the sights for it.

100% because I'm spoiled by how easy the daisy is to cock and fire. I have an 880 already, it's not bad but loading pellets is annoying along with the multipump. I've loved the breach setup on the Crosman 362, makes loading pellets a breeze.

These are some great suggestions! Thank you -- The Diana Eleven looks very nice, I'm trying to find some videos on how it sounds.

If you're having problems loading the 880 - After you pull the bolt back push the bolt slightly forward to block the BB loading port. Then place the pellet on the ramp and roll it in with your thumb. I've felt the same way until StonyKill came up with this method. It worked for me and quite a few others after a little practice. However, nothing wrong with wanting something different. I've been the same way many times - lol.

Have you tried a pellet pen.
With a scope on my rifles it makes loading pellets a chore. Drop, sometimes flip, align, push push bolt.
With the pen it drops it in nose first every time.
It's also a must with my Beeman P17 after a slight modification.

I've considered picking one of them up but I wasn't sure if they were gimicky or actually helpful. Glad to hear its worth it, I'll grab one.

Trying to find some info on the Diana Two Forty vs the Diana Eleven. Are they the same gun with different stocks? I think this will fit the bill on the quality, accuracy, convenience, price and sound level.
Between the two, I would like to know if there is any difference aside from the stock/grip. I've found quite a bit of info/reviews on the Two Forty but cannot seem to find much info on the Eleven (it appears to be a newer release?)
Thanks all
-
I got all sorts of guns …but still a big fan @ least for me the simplicity of C02….one of the crosman lego guns for example ….a TKO or one of the 3-D moderators makes for a nice quiet afternoon of shooting….good luck on your choice….

If those Diana options have your interest, the Stoeger S3000 is very comparable (if not mechanically the same thing). To get an idea of sound/performance, here's a video from Off The Shelf Airguns...

To answer your question, the current Diana Two Forty and the Eleven are mechanically the same. They're manufactured in China, not Germany. There have been other brands/models in years past that are essentially the same platform with subtle differences, stocks and/or sights and etc...

I am so glad you posted this, after a few hours of looking over my options I stumbled on a video of a moderated CO2 rifle and I was amazed at how quiet it was. I also realized that even if I moderated a springer there will be a lot of mechanical noise there. I finished 3D printed and setting up a moderator for the Crosman 362 I'm testing and I can't believe how much it helped in sound. The mechanical sound is still pretty loud but it got me thinking that a moderated CO2 might be just what I'm looking for.
Do you have any suggestions in the $100~ price range? I was looking at the Crosman 1077 and Ruger 10/77 (450fps version) as options but just started digging into CO2 options. Quiet is key so FPS is not a worry.

I have 2 moderated 1077 and both IMHO are still louder than other guns…sound is subjective and whats loud to one ,well u know….Im not familar with any guns in the $100….that does mean there aren’t any…..one of my favorite shooters is a QB78 ….moderately pricedI have 3 in varying configurations ….and with a https://www.tko22.com/ U only here pellet strike….check out pyramid air to see if any thing looks good…best of luck on choice…

I’d get a Crosman 2260 over the 10/77.
Use this: COMEBACK2022 for a 20% discount
It’s about $110 shipped with the discount.
Dunno if the Flying Dragon XS60C is still available.

Mr. Avator is right with the reduced velocity when temps are low.
They also don’t like to be shot fast, so take time..
My 1st C02 build (when I came to the US) based on the 2250 platform:
-
Not only that but you're adding the cost of C02 cartridges to your shooting experience. It might not be considered much but it adds up.
-
It actually started out as a 2260, but I changed the tube it ‘cuz it was too heavy, lol!
The material is stainless, so it weighs a ton ???
-
If you're going to talk to Mike at Flying Dragon, ask about the XS12.

Bill sir, I like the simplicity of the C02 though, I mean, it’s not as scary as a PCP ;D
I enjoy both platforms :-*
-
I like C02 as well... I think it's just fair to post the pros and cons to someone who is asking for help.

I ended up ordering the Stoeger S3000-C, it appears to be the same XS-12 clone of the others I was looking at but the stock looks much more comfortable! I'm excited to see how it goes tomorrow, as long as the report isn't too crazy it might be the winner for me. I was seriously considering CO2 but with how sporadic I shoot I would be wasting cartridges constantly.

Hi Huelle.
I hope you like your new Stoeger S3000-C rifle when you get it.
I have one and it is very accurate with .177 cal. Crosman 7.4 gr. pointed pellets.
The rifle is fairly light weight and very easy to cock.
I use mine for general plinking, target shooting and small pest eradication.
I have also taken the occasional gray squirrel with it at ranges of no more than 20 yards with a well placed head shot.
Pellet muzzle velocities for that rifle are around 635 fps with the Crosman 7.4 gr pointed pellets.
The rifle makes for a good all day shooter.
Best Wishes - Tom
Below are pictures of my rifle and a target that I shot with it.
The target was shot 25 times at 35 yards.

I was under the impression you shouldn't leave your CO2 in the gun for extended periods, not good for the seals? If I went CO2 I was really interested in the Diana Chaser with the rifle kit.

Co2 cartridges are cheap. I remove them half full all the time. AR 2078, 2078A and 2078B have a degasing port to release gas. 2078B sidelever is my favorite co2 rifle.

If it's not, I'd say it's close enough to be considered a kissing cousin ;) ::) ;D
Congrats on the purchase! Hopefully it suites your wants/needs.
-
I think the Diana 11, 240 and XS12 triggers are more like the TO5 Chinese copy in the XS25/Air Hawk.
I think the Stoger 3000c trigger is like the Crosman Optimus/Vantage/B18-19 triggers
-
The XS12 is definitely not like a TO5 trigger.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDi2jreS70U
-
I not exact but the trigger block and safety make it look similar to a Chinese clone TO5.
-
Here's a TO5 for comparison.
-
The Stoeger is great, very accurate, I love the fit and finish, easy to cock, aim and shoot. The trigger was nice and smooth as well. More kick than I expected but it was a springer. Unfortunately though, its just too loud. At first it was dieseling evidenced by smoke with the first few pellets but after running a barrel cleaner through it and shooting another 20 or so pellets, it didn't quiet down enough. Too much of a crack from the report, and then there's the spring.
I'm going to give CO2 a try. The Daisy Chaser kit has been hailed as being extremely quiet, I was so close to choosing that before the Stoeger, I went ahead and 'pulled the trigger' on it. My main concern was leaving CO2 cartridges in the gun and ruining seals and the last thing I want to deal with is a leaky gun which is why I've stayed away from CO2 but as mentioned, co2 is pretty cheap so hopefully it won't be too big of a deal.
I hope you guys don't mind me documenting my journey to find the right air gun for me. After doing some testing with the rifles I've tried so far, the Daisy Red Ryder has a db level of around 82 which is acceptable. The Crosman 362 was around 92db unsuppressed at 2-3 pumps (enough for my range) and 80-82 suppressed. Also acceptable but it reminded me why I wanted to stay away from pumpers this time. I didn't get a chance to check the db on the Stoeger but I will edit that in or reply with that at some point today. Based on my ears, its louder than the C362.
From everything I've seen, the Chaser with the suppressed rifle is extremely quiet. I really think its going to be the one. Unfortunately shipping will take a minute to get here so we will see in about a week or so.
-
Hi Huelle.
I am surprised that your Stoeger is so noisy.
What is the weight of the pellets that you are using ?
Mine is very quiet and has a mild recoil but it is fully broken in too.
Good Luck in your search.
Best Wishes - Tom
-
I doubt people mind.
For comparison, the rated dB that I saw for both the 880 and the P3 were about 90.
Anything sounds louder near a roof or wall.

I was too, it measured around 88db. It wasn't terrible by any means it's just not what I I'm looking for. My backyard has nothing but a field directly behind it which is where I'm setting up all my target stuff but my side neighbors are too close for comfort. They also have a small child so I don't want them feeling uneasy about it, you know? I didn't mind with the Red Ryders me and my daughter were using, the report and the pellet impacts were so minimal it was like a carnival gun. I do use my 880 sometimes but its usually at 3-4 pumps since my targets are pretty close and its quiet enough. But I am trying to set myself up so I can go out back for longer sessions of target shooting where I can be as quiet as possible.
I'm pretty excited about the Chaser, from what I've seen its suuuper quiet and rather accurate so it could be just what I want. It's also the first gun I've ordered not on Amazon so I'll likely be keeping it one way or the other haha
-
If it's cracking loud going down range a heavier pellet will fix that. 8.3 grs RWS Meisterkugeln and Match R-10 wadcutters is all Ishoot now. They shoot good in most anything.
-
Just a quick update, I got the new air rifle (Diana Chaser) and all I can say is it's perfect. Exactly what I was looking for, ultra quiet, no pumping, I got the magazine so it makes shooting such a pleasure. Right now I'm on the 'hunt' for a scope. I was using the one that came with my daisy 880 but I think this girl needs something a little nicer if anyone has some recommendations.
I purchased an RWS variety pellet pack for trying out different pellets. I've shot about 2-3 co2 cartridges through so far, you get a lot of shots per cart. Excited to get it sighted in, right now the scope i had was so out of whack I'm barely hitting the tree in front of me haha
But yeah, if anyone has an affordable scope recommendation <$40 I'd love to hear it!
-
You at least need mildot and magnification. AO not so much. Walmart has some Centerpoint scopes around $40-50.

Fun little gun. Well constructed.
It's a light gun, ideally would be nice to find a short, light scope. You'll want AO to focus at airgun ranges.
I do not believe that all exists under $40, though. I've had good luck with the cheaper scopes on Amazon -- Pinty, CV Life, Svbony, etc. Sometimes they are pretty hefty though.
You might find a compact AO 4x32 around that price. I found this one that's AO 3-9x40, about 13" long and claims to only be 12oz.

The Diana has dovetail rails, so you'd need different dovetail rings, or a pair of dovetail-to-picitinny rail adapters.
These or similar:

There are folks here that bought the Sbvony (sp) scopes off Amazon for as little as $5 recently, some bought 3-5 pcs ... They're heavy, but if that doesn't bother you I'd suggest putting a WTB in the classifieds to see if anyone is willing to part with one. The closer to you the better (shipping) ;)

Winchester AO scopes in 4x32 or 2-7x32, although they only have Duplex reticles.
A lot of users seem to be happy with them.
-
I bought all the Sbony scopes and they are all on guns LOL
Here is a decent scope for the use, one would need a set of 11mm medium or high scope mounts depending on your preference for best fit from cheek weld to scope view.

High would allow using opens at close range.

Hi Ron.
I have the CVLIFE 4x32 Compact Rifle Scope.
It is currently mounted on my .117 cal. Stoeger S3000C rifle.
I have had this scope for around 4 years and it has been on more than one of my rifles.
I like it, but it has it's draw backs.
Pros:
1. Very clear.
2. Very light weight.
3. Mill Dot reticule.
4. Tough and durable
5. Not expensive.
6. Comes with scope rings.
Cons:
1. Very short eye relief
2. The supplied rings are the 5/8 in. Weaver/Picitanny style rings.

I have the German made Diana240 and it is a fun lightweight low powered gun to plink with. Of course at my range distance, a modified rear sight setup and lightweight pellets are mandatory. Several years back I tuned a Chinese Xisico B12 and that was a fun little gun to shot as well. Both of these rifles are simple to service/tune and backyard friendly to shoot.

So I ended up returning the .177 Diana Chaser to Midway. Something wasn't right with accuracy out of the box that no matter what I did it would shoot wildly off. Even after adding a scope it was shooting ridiculously high even maxing out the scope settings. To have the scope work I needed almost an inch of spacers on the front mount which not only looked comical but really highlighted how off the barrel was. The tipping point came when I reviewed the suppressor and noticed a chip being taken out of the outlet from the pellets hitting it on exit. At that point being as new as it was, I opted to return/exchange for a replacement. I probably could have tinkered with it to correct this but new I wasn't comfortable with that. They didn't have the .177 in stock so I opted for my replacement to come in the .22 version, I enjoyed working with the .22 pellets in another rifle I tried so I'm fine with the caliber switch.
Aside from the broken accuracy I really enjoyed the rifle. Shoots very quiet and smooth, trigger was great, very comfortable. As long as the replacement shoots straight I should be happy!

If you are still looking for a scope, I have 3 on the shelf and nothing to put them on. All 4 of my airguns are scoped and I have no interest in acquiring more. One CenterPoint and the Weaver are like new (no dents or scratches) with original box. The other CenterPoint is suitable for a BB gun and has been scratched by the mounts.
I would like half of new price but will consider any reasonable offer. Buyer pays shipping.
I do not have an on-line method of payment because my computer has been hacked twice. We will need to converse by PM or phone if you want to buy them.
If the moderators don't object, I will post a description of them here.
