Title: Revisiting the Recluse
Post by: Back_Roads on February 25, 2024, 10:11:35 AM
I finally got around to testing some new 89gr. ammo I cast, 2 years ago ??? LOL Still have another one to go, but this is my start.
2900 psi low power
686, 679, 692, 706, 723, 720, 731,751, 755, 752,773, 160 bar,  780, 794, 150 bar, 786, 140 bar, 770, 130 bar, 788, 782, 773, 120 bar, 764, 110 bar.
Nice sweet spot in the curve from 160 - 129 bar. Next is to see if I can make up the 100 fps by using high power for the first few shots.
I may squirrel between this and my AEA .303 Challenger in a separate thread, as I am setting that up with a THOR Lt thermal.

Yes Coyote may be sniffing around the farm after blood was shed last week, and a 1/4 mile long scent trail was created moving the body to the burial sight.

Saw a coyote on my way home from work, was getting twilight, it was making a run from one section of woods, across a fild then the road, into another 80 acre fields before the next woods, good size one, thought it was a small deer at first, as I saw a heard of them a few miles earlier. Make note bring guns next time lol.

Good one, James.

I decided to skip the 50 yard sight in and walked them in at 105 yards. First 2 shots hit the spinner, after they hit the ground ahead of the target. Target still bends on impact, slugs still get totally flat.  ;D 8) Next step will be placing targets every 10 yards, after casting more ammo, as I am getting low on that brand now LOL.

What bullit mold were you using for this .357 ammo?  Thank you.

What'd you find out about accuracy ar different ranges?

Thank you for the reply.  Did you size them after casting to .358, or did you shoot them as cast?

I have it set up with a 1 mil holdover at 100 yards, so I want to find my holds for ranges for 100 and less, then I may work it out to 150 yards also as I have that to work with if I put targets up by the wood pile.

So far I am shooting them as they drop out of the mold.

Dang, 150 with the recluse! Haven't read much long range shooting accounts with that gun. Looking forward to it.

I don't often use my mildots beyond a couple due to shooting mostly at shorter ranges and in .177.  Just got a new scope and am wanting to learn it better anyway. Maybe your recluse testing will help me.

If you have the means to size your casts, I highly recommend it.  Long story short, I tried as cast with my 909s.  The caster said it's no big deal.  The groups were nothing to brag about, even at 30 yards.  Nothing touching.  However, once I sized all the slugs they were all touching.  I now size all of my slugs before shooting any of them.  Consistency is key, as I found out the hard way.

I shot about 10 of a deep HP slug I am testing also, accuracy is better than expected, I was going to get some more range time in yesterday but worked longer than planned, and had to get home to take SWMBO out for her birthday dinner :)
Also tested some.303 slugs out of the Challenger .30 Standard. I will start a thread on the .30 when the snow melts :)

I've often thought about owning a big bore but it was always more of a whim than a need.
I wouldn't even think about one unless I had a mold to cast my own lead.

Back when I bought it, it was my dive into the PCP rabbit hole, I started with some of the AV slugs and round balls, but decided if I want good big bore ammo I had to make my own, so to say I put a leg in both rabbit holes, but to save $ and get accuracy.
I figured I might as well go big or stay in the basement ;)

Exactly.... it would pretty much be a novelty thing for me because I really have no purpose for anything that big. The experience would be fun to have but it would most likely eventually go to fund some other flavor of the day and I would typically lose money on it.

Did some number stuff on Chairgun, printed out the holds for both the Recluse and AEA Challenger .303 Next outing I will be checking and tweaking the scope some. The AEA is going to be more of a challenge as it is scoped with a THOR Lt thermal, with recital choices to explore.

While rectal choices do sound challenging, I think the challenges you mean are retical or theoretical. [chuckling]

Well time and weather have put this on hold, now I am looking at setting up my Wing Shot with a Turkey load for the upcoming spring turkey season, now that WI allows airguns.

I look into the wing shot 1 and 2 now and then but never have handled one.  How do you have it set up for turkey?

I will need to test different loads of shot to see pattern and down range power. There are much better air shotguns out now though.

Curious about the power ranges you have to work with.  What are some of the current air shotguns that catch your eye?

Thanks!  All beyond my buying weight class and hand pump restrictions but fun to learn about. More powerful than I expected.

Ever try filling the shells with weird stuff rather than shot? Might be fun or funny to play with that way.

Well my spring Turkey season has been over for a week now, the bird that kept out smarting me got hit by a truck  a couple days ago LOL.
SO time to get back on this project along with the AEA and the thermal setup, if the squirrel will leave me alone ;)

Mission accomplished BBT 130 gr HP, 5 shots 740+ FPS 160 FPE-ish I ran the numbers in ChairGun, Ready for action.
Did a laser bore sight in followed by some target work and rechecking and catching a scope height error, then applying the fix.

These deer most likely will be on the smaller size, so less meat damage perhaps ???
