Title: I have nobody but myself to blame
Post by: bantam5s on February 02, 2024, 05:50:21 PM
I was watching a very nice condition daisy no.177 " Target special " bb pistol on ebay.
The seller offered it to me for $34, and I counter offered $30 for it.
While I was waiting for the seller to respond somebody snatched it up for the original $39 buy it now price.

It's my fault ,and I should have just given him the $34+ shipping for it.
Oh well, these pistols don't command much and I'm sure I'll eventually find another in good condition at a fair price.
There's a few others available cheap right now, but they've got some rust and I'm holding out for one in better condition.

There's a couple small scratches and imperfections that are tough for me to phototgraph

Those are both fine examples,  I didn't know they made a JC Higgins version.
If I saw that one on Ebay I'd probably buy anyways for the right price and try to make some wood grips for it.

I have a deal in the works with Beullm2, and if I'm lucky they'll just need a little oil and breaking in to wake the guns up.

Are you going to try and talk him down by $4?

Are you going to try and talk him down by $4?
I tried and somebody payed the original buy it now asking price of $39 while I was waiting for a response, here I was trying to pay $4 less and somebody else was happy to pay $5 more.
I wouldn't have hesitated at $39 a few years ago, but with today's shipping costs a reasonable Ebay asking price doesn't quite work out to be so reasonable for one of these.

From what I've seen they made a lot of these over a 20 year or so period,  and It seems like a lot of unimpressed buyers didn't shoot them much based on the number of nice examples I've seen.

If I can get one shooting well enough for popping a 1" foam ball hanging in my BB trap from 10' I'll be happy.

I just don't know if anybody has really explored repairing these though because there's a rivet to drill out, and I don't think a lot of people are really looking to shoot such a low powered bb pistol.

Good Grief Man, don't negotiate to get $5 off unless deep down you really didn't believe it was the gun for you.  Sometimes we sabotage ourselves on purpose that way.  I've done it far too often myself.

Only if you buy and sell a high volume of items will $5 or $10 off make a difference.  I used to watch American Pickers on TV and thought it ridiculous to quibble over a few dollars until it occurred to me those guys sold a thousand items a year and negotiating for a few dollars off each purchase price really added up.

I seldom find a killer deal on anything I want.  Usually if I want something I pay for it (I flunked Negotiating 101).  I've learned the sting of paying too much is forgotten in time and I'm left with only joy of owning what I wanted and that's hard to put a price/value on.  The only things I've regretted paying up for are things that didn't measure up and I sold for a loss without getting any enjoyment out them.

I had friends who enjoyed going to casinos.  They'd lose $600 in a weekend and come home happy.  They said it was the cost of enjoyment and they got their money's worth.

If you want it, buy it.  If it measures up you'll get your money's worth even if you don't get all your money back.

This is so true. I have had no problem paying full price or even more sometimes for something I wanted. Then it's a done deal and move on to the next item. Could be years, decades, or maybe never to get the opportunity again to aquire something.

Sure this may not totally apply to the gun in this thread as those do show up often... but how often in the condition that you passed on? Now you could end up searching for sometime for another one.

If it's something you want, you won't sell it anyway... so it's just a sunk cost for your enjoyment 🙂

It's rare that I'd want to haggle over just a few $ like this, but that shipping really factored in for me.
Condition was good, sale price was fine, but the potential total with shipping & CA sales tax hit me and I was compelled to try saving $5.

That has really hit me the past year and I've been haggling more, not that I'm exactly cheap but on lower value items that already cost more on Ebay $5-$10 can easily bring these sub $50 items decently above their value.
I am no stranger to paying more than I should for things I want which are ultimately made to last qualit, but not when I'm gambling on the function of a gun I might not be able to repair.

It's a good thing that I lost out on this one though, because I'm buying those 2 very nice examples beullm2 posted.
