Title: Behemoth rattus #17
Post by: ranchibi on December 14, 2023, 12:44:56 AM
This one had been coming at different times the last 4 evenings. I had put up the doorcam but the push notifications were not coming thru but I did see a glimpse and knew it was a rat, an adult one at that. During the day I played around with the doorcam and got the push notifications to work, so this evening I put it up and prepped the Prod. At a little after 8pm I got a push notification and there it was. I hurried and opened the window but it made a god-awful sound spooking it and it took off, but, I knew it would return soon so I waited and about 2 minutes later it returned but took off quickly so I waited and about 3 minutes later it returned but was skittish. I then turned on the red LED flashlight and peered thru the scope.....clear as day it was facing left and broadside. It was relaxed eating, and I usually take a heart shot when presented with a broadside shot but it was just standing there so I put the illuminated dot right behind it's ear and let the sleeping pill fly...thwack...went down immediately and slowly rolled off the platform onto the grass. A huge male @ 17" and heavy for a rat.

Great shot Randall!  And what a whopper!  Glad to see you are starting to get some activity also, funny how the east and west coast seem to be somewhat in sync with rat activity!  :o ;D

Excellent shooting on that monster rat Randall!!  Patience pays off but you got their habits and behavior down and know they won't give up a free meal easily.  Did you use the Prod?

I bet that big rat has a family and I have a feeling you are going to reunite them  ;D

I should set up some game cameras around the barn at work, to see if there is any Rattus activity or the bait stations are doing their job still.

HARRY! Long time no .com....LOL! Thank you very much kind sir! I do have their habit's down pat! And, I do believe he was a bachelor but time will tell and, yes, the Prod did the JSB RS injection so he will not have any more insomnia issues...😂👍! Happy Holidays 🍁 to you and your loved ones!

I have had a Opossum coming in to the stations and for some reason the rats stay away ,  but soon he will move on.

Yeah, same here, every time a possum is around the rats go on hiatus....😢

Funny you mentioned Possoms scaring away the Rats...  My Critter Cam captured this unlikely dinner party at the feed station last night!

https://youtu.be/j3uFnWI3tHI

The Possom was probably wondering where that guy with the air gun was, because he typically dines on the Rats, not with them!   ;D

This one is a pretty brazen Rat!

LOL Paul! Great video! That rat probably thought that possum was just an enormous rat at first....😂! Steveoh had a video of a rat he had shot and when a possum got near the dead rat it pounced on it from about 2 feet away, so yeah, that was one ballzy rat! Happy New Year 🎆 🎈 Paul to you and your loved ones! I do have a rat coming around also but possums have been out so it is very inconsistent in appearing....soon.....😉

Randall, I have seen the Posssoms here pounce on a dead rat also.  They also like to grab and go, snatching the dead rat and then high tail it into the woods to eat in peace!  The Possom in that video is an old guy, he's been around for a few years, shows up right about the same time every night  and not much bothers him.  I'm pretty sure he is the Alpha Male Possom in that section of woods.

I should be back in business soon if the Posssoms stay away.

Paul, that's so cool! We get a lot of road kill possums here in the city, glad yours has been around awhile!

Oh yeah Jesse! Your big ole black rats are back! The possums have been around here too keeping the rats away for the most part. Hope you get some footage of your dispatches!
