Title: Diana 48 Awww Mannnn!
Post by: barcabarca on November 16, 2011, 02:53:05 PM
I loaned my favorite hunter to my bro last night. It's the refurb D48 .22 in the picture in my signature.  Last week I put a spring from a D460 inside it and it increased the power from 777 w/14.3 to avg 810fps.  Shot just as smooth as before, with the stock spring,  for 75 shots, before I loaned it out.

He calls and says that when he tried to fire, it didn't work.  He loaded a pellet in and pulled back the lever, hit the lever release button and returned the lever to its closed position.  The trigger he said felt "mushy" and there was no "pop".  I asked him to manipulate the safety and he did, with me on the phone, but no response at all from the trigger. No fire.

Now, I'm worried.  I have a good spring compressor, but I worry because if the AR piston is engaged on the sear somehow and trigger is just not releasing it, then taking it apart to see what is wrong could be a dangerous proposition.

Any input on how to get it back to a "safe to open" state?  How could I check visually to see if all is ok to tear it open?

Thanks,

A

Repeat after us..."I will never, ever loan any firearms or airguns to anyone, I will never, ever loan any firearms or airguns to anyone, I will never, ever loan any firearms or airguns to anyone"

You are the third post this week on "loaners to bro's", (or is that... ex-bro's?)

Yes to all your comments on tearing it down, it's now a dicey proposition, proceed with caution, wear gloves, safety glasses and wrap gun in big heavy blanket if neccesary (flying parts catcher).

Well you can try this! pull the lever back and hang on tight! and pull the trigger to see if it releases the spring! you my have to do this a few times to get to release but make sure you have the lever pulled all the way back when you pull the trigger and hang on tight!!!!!!!!!! :P

Didn't see your comments on " I put a D460 spring in it" and.. "it's a re-furb". Oh boy...

On both counts, get a heavy KEVLAR blanket and tear down to inspect. Stay on the friendly side of the Kevlar and all bets are off.

Also post over on the Dianawerk.

The 48 is quite popular there.  Could be a simple way to trip the sear, etc.  And don't go blaming your brother.  Might be he is blaming you for loaning him a "defective" gun, LOL!  Good luck!

Especially if it's your favorite shooter. :D

try tapping the back of the receiver with a rubber mallet and hope it knocks the piston  around just enough to fire.

Ever wonder where the ORIGINAL POSTER with the URGENT matter goes off to in these threads?

HELLO! Nice GTA people trying to help you here...anyone home? What's that you say? Thanks for all the info? Oh, ok, you are welcome.

Yea, one of my pet peeves too.
But when I got my RWS 52 (used) I thought it was broken. Sent the seller a nice but concerned message. Turns out I hadn't cocked it the last 1/8" and the trigger wasn't reset completely. I felt like a dope, but caught it after about ten minutes after sending my message to the seller. Sent him another message apologizing and he was very gracious.

But these folks that go public and then never return are noisome.

SAADE.  If you have some feedback, you can just talk to me directly, that is why we share our emails on the site.  Perhaps you were not aware of this function.

If you look through my posting history, it is pretty chock full of "Thank You's" to the great members of this forum.  One of the reasons that I don't ask these questions on the Dianawerk Forum anymore is this type of response.

As for URGENT...I have a whole other bunch of stuff besides the fantastic things that happen on these pages.  These things are great, but at best they are a hobby for me, sometimes I just have a few minutes to post a response per month.  In my posting, there is NO reference of URGENCY or that this was an URGENT matter that needed your immediate attention, SAADE.  If it came across that way to you, I am sorry.

I really DO appreciate all of the tips and efforts to help.  I THANK all of the folks who have offered advice, yourself included.  This is a great place to share and learn information.

I think we should be a bit gentle with our demands as many times folks read into things in postings that just aren't there.  My perceived "rudeness" would be one of those I believe.

As soon as I get the rifle back, I will report on my attempts to get my situation corrected.

Thanks all,

I hope you get it figured out and it turns out to be something simple. But whatever it is, let us know when you get the chance.

 ;)

Hey all, first, thanks for all of the help.

Secondly, I finally got the D48 back from my brother.  It turns out that it has a problem that I have read about and experienced myself a few times before..
As he was pulling the cocking lever back, he felt it "catch" at the end of the stroke.  When he released it, the sear had not yet engaged, even though he thought it had.  This is the problem, where, with just a bit more effort after the first "catch" you give the lever a tug and it finally catches.  My D48 did that as well sometimes.

HOWEVER, I did get to thinking about what some of you said, so I took it apart, re-checked everything and put the old stock spring back in.  She is once again shooting at just below 20FPE with 14.3gr CPHP and still shooting smooth...  Since I didn't have that problem with the old spring, I just thought that maybe it might be a safer and better path to lower the FPE back a bit. It is after all, a Refurb and I don't know exactly why,so this might be prudent..

I still want to get a D48 that shoots at around 23 FPE or so, but I may just have to find another one

Thanks,

A

Thanks for the up date! and don't let a little mishap detour you from trying to get the power out of the rifle your looking for! it can be done with a little trial and error! :P

Don't know the specifics of the 48 ? ... but just rebuilt my side lever 75 and hadd issue with the "Safety Catch" ramp & post being out of adjustment.
Cock rifle and fire the rifle would snap lightly but not discharge, finally removed stock and watched the action and mechanics funtion as gun cocked and arm was reset.  Sure enough one screw I had removed was NOT in the correct relationship preventing piston from completely releasing.

Just tossing it out there ?????????????

at the low energy level of airguns, the difference bewteen 20 fpe or 23 fpe is insignificant past 10-15 yards

15-20% less energy is irrelevant at more than 15-20 yards.  Tell me more. I'm interested in understanding how this works. According to Straight Shooters, it looks like a pellet loses about 20% or so energy btwn 25 and 50 yards, ending at 13 FPE.  If you start at about 10 percent lower energy wouldn't this mean that for a given pellet, it would be the same ratio of decline.  Maybe I don't quite understand..Thanks.

Barca:

Thank you for your post about the M48 and explaining WHY!!! if you DO NOT pull the arm all the way the sear will not catch

Typical human error on the sidelevels

I enjoy coming and reading this forum but sadly do not post, still a great forum

at the Dianawerks is where I hang my hat and it is just a matter of PREFERENCES

back to the M48;

it is a SPECIAL air rifle, first because it was made in .177, .20, .22, .25 CAL. (all 4)

while on the heavy side of the scales it is a FIX barrel

you can MOD it anyway you want and real simple and cheap or expensive if you so desire (GINGB) comes to mind
