Since I am currently limited to 26 yards back yard shooting I have started buying different Daisy bb rifles. I had no idea there were so many. So, which ones are the ones to buy? I have a RR, model 25, a 499, a model 35 and a 840 to be delivered today. Which ones are more likely to hold up over time?
-
Model 25 has been an enduring design.
The 499 is a target gun and has also been arounf for years...
I am a big fan of the older 880's, but the new ones shoot just fine and are easily rebuilt if ever needed.
The 840 is a greatlittle gun...........until it isn't.
It has a plastic valve body thet cancrack, and id not reparable or replaceable.
Some folks continue to get good service from their 840 after years of use.
I have never held a mod 35, but it appears to be a smooth bore version of the mod 901, a solid feeling gun that I really like.
So....................

I know the 840 has issues, but didn't know that before I bought it, didn't pay much for it. There is a replacement for the part that fails, but I doubt that I would be interested in trying to replace it. see the link I posted if it works and thanks for the input.

Don't forget, Crosman made, and still makes alot of great bb guns. Actually, there are alot of great bb options that would do well in that range. You might also consider C02.

Well, I have a Crosman Mk in tan and black, rifled barrel but I was planning on shooting bbs and an SR 375 bb CO2 pistol that is Crosman
was mainly thinking Daisy for now as the only one that I already had was the RR
-
The 2100 is also a bb gun. And still use metal parts.

What do you want to do with them? For general plinking the ones you listed are good. If you are wanting to do pesting then the 880 or 1977 would do better out to the range you provided.

Daisy/Winchester 1911 pistol. Case is low cost or can be had for free.. Spare mags are cheap at PA. Fun gun, Blow back, lock back, double and single action. Same gun as Sig Spartan and Max Michel. Installing co2 uses a lever, tricky but you get use to it.
Daisy 5501 is a neat little pistol also. Cheaper by $8 on Amazon with free next day delivery. Spare mags cheap at PA.
All the above made in Japan.

I cant stop recommending the umarex brodax, which you can get at TSC for 40 bones. best, most accurate out of the box BB shooter. I have bought three, and all of them left with friends who have come over for BBq and such and then ended up shooting cans and other things.
The 2100 may not be a good choice as it is rifled... but the 760 make decent shooters WHEN you find the right ammo. the 35 is also amazing, but i generally end up putting a 880 rifled straw and being amazed by how accurate it can be with pellets. Heck, is generally also accurate with the smoothbore and pellets.
Red ryders. period. I love them. and also bucks. With RR stocks. trigger mods and powermods.
-
Definitely an 880. I'm on my third, and of everything I have it's my go to. Accurate, easy to keep it going with a drop of 30W ND once or twice a year, and you can even scope it though irons are decent for as cheap as these are. Get one at WallyWorld and if you don't like it, you can return it?
If you don't mind spending more though (I usually forget), Flying Dragons sells Chinese springers and offers a tuning services with them. I've never shot a tuned air gun, but I've heard the difference after tuning on YouTube, and only reason I don't have one is I'd like to avoid flyting frypans...
-
Steve: you want to play with tuned airguns? meet me one day half way, say in Heflin Alabama. We got a great airgun range and you can try any tuned airgun you want from my stable... Flying dragon, british, german stuff, self tuned Crosman and Benjis, and even tuned 880s... this is an open invitation. Let me know when you can do the trip, and ill meet you there (im in GA).

Brodax is a well kept secret. I have three.

I did not mind overpaying for My Daisy 880....It is #257 of 500 50th anniversary limited edition...no different but has a plaque and certificate.. ;) bout 80 bucks after shipping...from the Daisy museum... I like pretending it is a lever action .257 Roberts.. ;)
My other Daisys are 953s... one I learned is from the first month they became available in 1985...confirmed by Orrin Rybar before he passed (curator of the Daisy Museum)... it was the beginning of the whole 753/853/953 line... Tho it was a gift back a bout 10 15 years ago; It hooked me back into air powered rifles and such... Have a small fleet of pumpers and another small fleet of pcps now.. ;)
so it ended up costing me $$$.. ;)
we also have a 2004 953 that has a synthetic stock and daisy barrel... Shoots just as good as the 1985 U.S. shooting team 953 despite not having the L.W. barrel of the 85... it was also a gift...
all Daisy collections Should have an X53 in it... Pretty sure the Civilian Marksmanship program still sells the used 853s They do have the L.W. barrel.. ;) last I knew they ran about 100$...
look like the price went up a bit... scroll down till you see the used/refurbished 853...

I found the brodax on Amazon for under $40.00 and free shipping so I have one coming ...

I wonder if the trouble with the 840 is being over pumped as it is a single pump?

the brodax will surprise you. 425 fps with daisy precision BBs, and something upwards of 80 shots per powerlet. be careful loading CO2. DO NOT FORCE the piercing by overtightening the powerlet base. The secret is, snug the co2, when it stops being gentle with the tool (the left grip IS the tool), just give it a tiny snug, like a 1/8 of a turn. then cock the hammer and pull the trigger. that is it. if it leaks mildly, nscrew the powerlet base a smidge, see if it stops. if it doesnt resnug super softly til it stops. its super friendly and well built. Did i say its well built? its the best built CO2 pistol you can get.

My bud just found another yard sale "goodie" for me...I had to look it up.
Daisy Model 1999DB lever bb gun.
The Model 1999 has a big loop, and came in 3 colors, DB for Daisy Blue, C for Camo, and P for Pink.
This Daisy Blue is almost a Teal color. From what I read, it has a fiber optic front sight and rear is adjustable for elevation and Windage! 8)
Be a while before we can get together.....

Update:
Went to our Walmart yesterday, and saw a huge display in the middle of the aisle for the Red Ryder from Christmas Story.
Went into the sporting goods aisle and there on the shelf was a 1999 (Blue)
On the box Daisy called it "Western Sky Blue" .
and now I don't know if that rear sight is windage adjustable...

Sounds like they are winding up for Black Friday.
