Title: H&L shot with a wadcutter.
Post by: avator on October 14, 2023, 01:21:36 PM
Last day or 2 I have been revisiting some of the pumpers that have been occupying space around here. Putting scopes on them and sighting them in. One of those was a really nice Crosman 766. I put an RWS scope on it that has also been hanging around here and sighted it in at 20yds with Daisy blue&white tin wadcutters.
I went to the window shooting bench in the Red Shed this morning to shoot the gun some more before moving on to the next one.
I had it loaded and pumped 5 strokes when this guy came down the side of a tree 25yds out. I took the heart and lung shot due to lack of confidence in the 20yd sight in. I hadn't shot the gun alot since sighting it in so I didn't want to chance the head shot.
He went down, gave a couple kicks and lights went out.
Yeah, we grow em pretty big here in Lower Alabama.

Thanks Jerry.
Yeah, that guy and another one his size has been digging up lots of holes in the yard and around the property. We have a bunch of them here but those 2 are the biggest. I have been saying I was going to get them this year but this guy was just wrong place, wrong time.

Way to go Bill, show us we do not need .72 cal PCP to get a squirrel. I just like the simplicity of the old pumper for yard pest.

Good shooting! RWS Supermags are some of my favorite hunting pellets. Wadcutters will definitely get the job done.

I honestly believe that if Crosman would make a wood and metal pumper designed after these guns of yesterday and brought them to us in the $150 - $200 range they would make a killing on volume sales. I'm not talking about fancy new butterflies or $400 commemorative badge inlay limited editions stuff. Not even the cartridge trigger/hammer group and try to pass them off by naming them 342/392.
Give me a wood and metal pumper that I can do minimal improvements to such as smoothing and lightening the trigger. I don't need a repeater with overpriced junk mags that nobody stocks. And I don't want to buy a breech to replace a plastic one so I can securely attach a scope.
If it don't work as advertised out of the box, replace it with one that does, and you pay the return and shipping costs. And don't ask me to return it so you can repair it... I didn't pay for a refurb and I don't want one.
Make perishable parts available and affordable. Supply assembly diagrams and parts lists.
And last but not least...  answer the dam phone and emails.

Thanks guys, my objective today is to get one or 2 with the Remington Airmaster 77 sporting the aftermarket walnut wood and open sights.

Just watching the cameras for the activities to begin. Then I'll slip out the opposite door of the house and do my best Elmer Fudd impersonation.

Bill, excellent shot on that big ole Bama squirrel with your venerable 766! Nice pic.

Thanks Randall...

I think they are all attending the funeral today. I have been on the watch since daylight this morning and I only saw one and it didn't present me with a good shot.
It's been cool, overcast and windy all day so maybe they are just hanging out at home watch Nascar or football.
Or maybe it my Elmer Fudd stalk that has them hunkered down......    laughing.

Just goes to show you that the 766 is plenty lethal enough for squirrels.

Yes it is, along with the AM77, 2100 and all the guns in that style. I love the traditional rifle feel of those guns.

Great aftermarket wood on that airmaster! Never seen one converted to wood like that.

Thanks Rion. I have a 2100 in Mesquite that looks great too. It's a bit glossy for my taste but it's a nice hunk of wood.

That Mesquite looks great, on my bucket list to get a chunk to make a stock, and smoke some meat with the shavings ;)

That's another one of Eric Gilman's carvings.

Funny.  I avoided getting a 2100 for years because I hated the plastic furniture.  It never occurred to me that you could replace it with wood.  Now one of my "some day" projects is to put wood furniture on my 2100.

Carter, I do and always have considered the 2100 and it's sister guns worthy of wood. The difference is remarkable. The downside, if any, is the loading port. It is not fat finger friendly. Before I learned to carefully roll the pellets in I used squeezers. Like tweezers but clamp rather than pinch. They work great at the bench but not so much on a walk about. Many other folks use pellet pens.

I also delete BB capabilities of the guns. Adding the wood pretty much makes it impossible to use bbs anyways. It's best to block the passage from bb reservoirs to the breech with JB Weld or whatever. If not, pellets can get in there and jam things up.

Wow, that's a beaut!

Don't mind gloss wood myself, unless it's not actually wood. On the wall with wood floors, it catches the lam and candle light well.

That being said, as Jeff has mentioned the dry, unfinished wood furniture on the Akela keeps getting better every time I clean it with Ballistol.

Anyhoo, I am tempted to look into wood for a crosman pumper. Gave my cousin my remington, which actually a legacy with a nickel painted barrel, but I don't think he uses it or would care if I get it back.

That said, I do already have and shoot my dragonfly mk1.

I shoot BB's through my Legacy 1000 cause it's a piece of junk.  I've never shot a BB through my 2100.  I's accurate enough for head shots on squirrels at 25 yards with H&N FTT and I don't want to jinx it.  I've got to take the clamshell apart on mine to install this awesome new brass bolt probe that Ronno6 sent me.  I might try some of Ron's trigger mods too and I want to do some thing about stabilizing the the mechanism better inside the clamshell.  I'm thinking a few strategically placed wedges that would tension when the clamshell is clamped together and prevent movement inside the clamshell.  Now would probably be the time to put wood furniture on it if I'm ever gonna do it.

I agree with you.

I feel like they should have made the disco/Maximus as a pumper.

I ordered some dove decoys. Hoping to use the 880 to get it done.

The c362 comes close besides not being a repeater.

I figure Crosman will upgrade the 362 in few years to keep it competitive.  The steel breech will probably be standard along with a model with a longer length of pull.  A slotted magazine like the 760 would be a cheap upgrade.  The 362 is a good gun and a worthy successor to guns like the 1400.  It's 9/10 of what I wanted from Crosman.  Put a wood stock on it and it will look prettier but it ain't gonna shoot one lick better.
