Title: Pellet swap
Post by: SciGuy on September 03, 2010, 10:37:09 AM
As a new member and recent relapsed airgun addict, I hope I'm not overstepping or anything.  Many years ago when I was very active on the Delphi Forum, we had a pellet swap going.  Folks that participated could just exchange 25 pellets with another member.  It allowed us to test dozens of different pellets in our guns for very little money.  The only requirement was that if you received pellets, you must send pellets to the person that sent them to you.  It really worked well as I find arigunners to be some of the most considerate and honest folks around.

Is there any interest in starting a pellet swap up on the GTA Forums?  I can offer up several types of .22 pellets that I just received for pellet testing in my new Trail and some .177 wadcutters that are left over from my 10M airpistol days.

How do you ship them? I read on another forum that some guys were trying this using cardboard in an envelope. They wrote HAND CANCELL ONLY on the envelope and said that they had very few pellets with any damage. I think they were using about 3 stamps?? I don't remember what forum I saw it on. Anyway I would be interested.

I would be interested in this as well... as long as it is CHEAP

For shipping I would just put each different kind of pellet in a bag and write on the bag what it is.  Then put the bags into am empty pellet tin and put that into a padded mailer.  Not sure what the postage would be, but my guess is you could send 100 pellets (25 of 3 different types) for under $2.  Since the only charge for any of this is the cost of your own shipping, it can be as cheap as you want.

I'll load up a tin with 100 pellets and take to the post office to see how much it will cost.

Sounds like a good idea. Kinda like a sampler. A "pellet buffet" if you will. I would be willing to be part of it. One idea would be that if you are a participant, you could post what caliber, brand and type pellets you have for trading. Then people could browse members looking for specific calibers, etc. One question is what if someone has what I want, but I don't have anything they want? Then what? Would the requests be done via PM or regular forum posting?

Posting what we have to swap in a thread would be great, as would posting what we want to try.  I think the actual details of the swap should be handled via PM.

I'm open to ideas on how to handle the "What if I don't have something that they want".  Any ideas??

Not sure on how to handle the " you have something I want, but, I don't have anything you want" scenario...

I would be interested in joining.   I have .177 cal. & .22 pellets.  I like the idea of putting 4 diff. Pellets in bags & putting them in old pellet tin for shipping.   Thus testing 4 diff. Pellets at a time.

Thanks,

Paul

I'm interested, however, all I have are boring Wallyworld pellets in .177.  Can I buy the pellets, maybe 1 or 2 cents a pellet (or whatever is appropriate) plus shipping so I can still sample other types and brands?

The actual details of each swap are to be worked out by PM between the two people involved in the swap.  If you see someone with a pellet you want to try, just PM them and work out your arrangement directly.

I just mailed 25 pellets in a tin,in a bubble envelope from Wisconsin to Alabama.  The cost was $1.56 via USPS.  Just to give you some idea of mailing costs.

I mailed 25 pellets in a smaller dia gamo tin and that inside a 4x6 bubble envelope.

Just mailed same as tunaboat for about same price.  Checked the price for mailing 100 JSB Diablo Jumbo Express and it would be under $2 to anywhere in the US.  I used a bubble wrap mailer from WallyWorld (under $2).

Figure I will just reuse mailers that others send me by just putting a new label on it.  So total price to swap up to 100 pellets will be under $2.

Thanks to both you guys for doing the foot work on cost...

Sounds like this could be fun!

Now on to getting the "I am interested in something you have, but have nothing you want" scenario taken care of.... I'm kinda out of ideas on this one!

maybe a .25$ for 25 deal on the cheaper pellets, and like .50$ for 25 on the more expensive pellets plus actual shipping costs...?
Title: Re: Pellet swap
Post by: wicki67 on September 05, 2010, 09:29:26 AM
Not a bad idea....

How's this for a try...

Person contacts you and says they want to try 25 of the pellets you have listed. You package them up in an empty pellet tin and ship out to prospective buyer. He/she receives your pellets, then they empty out the tin, fill it with the appropriate amount of money that you paid to send your pellets to them (postage) plus the pellet cost (.50 cents), seal up the mailer and send it back to you. You get your empty tin back (for future use) plus the amount of money they owe you for your pellets, plus with them shipping the tin back to you, they pay an approximate amount of shipping cost...

How's this sound? Others thoughts....

We also may have to look at how we are pricing out these pellets to interested parties...
Cheap-o pellets from Walmart may be ok to send to others for, say the .25$ to .50$; but, I don't see anyone really wanting to send 25 of their Eunjins, or Predators, for the same price...

Anyone's thoughts on this?

I've read above a few times over and, if for some reason, it doesn't sound as good to everyone else reading it; I am gonna plead ignorance, due to being written early on a Sunday morning...hehehehehe

A 10.00 tin of 250 pellets costs approx .04 cents per pellet if I calculated that right, so the seller would actually be making money...If they dont wanna sell for say .50 cent for 25, maybe they can send a lower amount of pellets, and work out the price with the buyer?

I'm confused(not that unusual).... how does a seller that buys pellets for 4 cents each make money by selling them for 25 or 50 cents for a quantity of 25 pellets? Seems to me that the cost to the seller is $ 1.00.... Unless they are being discounted because they are no longer wanted, it would seem to me that its a lose-lose situation for the seller. I think that in a no-swap "sale" situation it would be almost too easy just to figure the going rate for the pellets and just sell them at cost, whether the buyer wants 25 or 100 pellets, the price would be fixed at cost, plus the applicable shipping cost to get them to the buyer.

I know, just my 2 cents! ;D

this not to make money but to share and even trade with others.
this is a way to try out pellets without buying a large quantity of 250 or 500.
of course you'll have to come to terms with the person you wish to deal with.

Instead of discussing rules for swapping, I suggest we let folks involved in the swap work out details and just use this thread for posting what we have to swap and what we want.

Just wanted to bump this.  Several of us have already swapped some pellets and things to be working nice and smooth.

If you have pellets to swap, post what you have and post what you want.  All details are then handled by PM between the folks involved and not in the thread.

I think the confusion in the cost is people think it would be $.25 to $.50 a pellet and then on your side thinking that it would be $.25 to $.50 for the 25 pellets.

SciGuy,

I am glad that you did bump this to the top, I must have missed it on the first posting. Maybe we could get a mod to make this stuck to the top or...... Another gate like a trade gate, trading guns services or anything it would be different from the classifieds in that it would be trading. Or maybe it could be a part of the classifieds.

Dave,

If we request in here not only will it go to the top, but the mods can see that the thread is used. Looks like you are using lots of pointed pellets I do like the look of the Destroyer's and I try to stay away from the pointed since both of my guns are shooting over 900fps.
Title: Re: Pellet swap
Post by: wicki67 on September 21, 2010, 06:12:15 PM
Pat,

Yeah, I have a bunch of them; but, my guns don't really group well with 'em... Domes and wadcutters seem to do better in mine...

If we could get this thread "stickied" it will stay up top and not require another gate... prevents having to scroll down thru all the "latest" topics to find this one, after a bit of a rest...

check your PM....

I'm going to start a new Pellet Swap thread and ask that folks only post what they have to swap and what they are looking for.  The cleaner we keep the new thread, the easier it will be for folks to participate in the swap.

And thanks all for keeping this thing going.
