Title: 97 on way what scope rings???
Post by: TOM aka critter99 on November 12, 2011, 07:55:12 PM
97 is on the way should be here Monday.

I have a one piece Leapers with a recoil pin around I could use....but is it needed?

Could I get by with say BKLs without recoil pins on a 97?

to begin with its getting my 2007 Vintage Leapers 3-9x32AO with the fine reticule....sure hope it does not break it as the newer ones have a fat reticule and not as robust in design.....I killed two newer ones in record time on a Diana 34

Generally the HW-97 does not require a one piece scope mount. One of few 1000 fps springers that don't. Remember the the heavier the scope is on an air gun the more likely it will creep on you.

Your setup would be just fine with the 4" cantalever BKL mount with a light scope. Anything heavier I would suggest a good two ring or a one piece  mount. Two ring set up make sure you have lock pin in place.

My HW-97 is so docile that I use a big Hawk 4-16X50 AO Mil Dot. I use a three screw one piece mount for her.

That scope your look at will work on that rifle and I'd get the Leapers 2 piece medium rings with stop pin and that should work just fine! :P

One piece Medium Centerpoint of Leapers with 20 minutes droop.
Using split rings on any sapringer in the long run will lead to bent scope tubes.
One piece mounts take the scope tube out of the structural member category and back to the Job they were meant to accomplish.
Whyen you stop the rear and not the front mount you may as well use just the rear as the scope is gonna get bent by the forces trying to pack it back.
Mount a thin 1" tube in the rings and start hitting the front of the tube and see what happens.
Scope tubes were NEVER MEANT TO BE STRUCTURAL MEMBERS of the mounting arrangement but that is what you have when you use split rings on a recoiliong springer and only stop one of them!
You can put a rod between the rings and stop both equally from the rear stop but if the gun doesn't have two stop holes Split rings are a bad idea. We called the ones with the rod Tie Rod Droopers and mostly made them in High configuration so they could clear 40MM. On a 97 or 77 a one piece medium works good.
The Chinese One Piece mounts cost the same as the Two piece so it makes no sense to avoid going with the more robust set-up.
When split rings were $35 and one piece were $60
My recomendations are based on the decades of experience servicing heavy users usingfhigh performance Venom gear. Your mileage may vary but few applications require stronger scopes and mounts.

I would agree with that if they recoil like a magnum springer but they don't JMHO :P
