For the life of me I don't remember....
The square holed brass threaded piece that holds the valve in, is there a trick to removing it? pretty sure its not a left hand thread.
Yes I have the tool, but haven't had one apart in 25 years.

I have not had any trouble removing the square holed nut...
Standard right-hand twist as I recall.....CCW removal.
Then made a puller to easily remove the valve body..........saves the lead seals for re-use.

I found soaking it with a squirt or two of liquid wrench for a day helps getting it started. Stick a long metal rod for a leverage handle through the hole in the end of the tool and keep bumping it over & over till the nut breaks loose. That always worked for me on the three guns I have had to reseal.
