Picked up this scope in a great deal with another member (thanks James) and I have a couple issues that are more likely me than the scope. I tend to miss small details. :-\
First off.. the firmware update...
The current firmware revision is xsight_1_8_08_352.bin
The latest firmware revision is xsight2_2_1_07_779.bin
The procedure is supposed to be to copy the file onto the micro sd card and power on the scope. The scope is supposed to prompt me to update the firmware. This does not happen. The scope just goes into it's power up routine as normal. I know the card is good because I've saved pics and videos to it and saved some of the setting changes I've made. I've watched every video I could find and I can't see me doing anything wrong.
Next is the wifi link to my android tablet or android cell phone...
I've d/ld Obsidian 4 app for the android from the ATN sight and google play and installed on both devices. I can see and connect to the scope through wifi with both devices... however, it shows that I am connected with no internet. But the Obsidian 4 software will just not bring up the scope. It just keeps saying "device disconnected".
Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? I was hoping the firmware update would resolve the issue because it.s an older unit. The older version of Obsidian will not run on either device.
I can do everything else with the scope that it's supposed to do.
-
Oh yeah, one more issue...
No sound on recorded videos. I checked the setting and it's set to "on".
-
I don’t recall the procedure for doing the firmware update on that scope, but it should be covered in the manual somewhere.
The Obsidian 4 app does not work with the model scope you have, download the other Obsidian app.
You may be able to initiate the firmware update through the app.
As for the audio not recording, that may be fixed with the firmware update.

What I did for mounting a battery was Velcro it ti the scope or gun area near the scope.

Paul... the older version of Obsidian says it's too old to run on my devices (Cell phone and Tablet)
James... that menu is for a newer scope than the 3-12x. I've watched that video and did exactly what is said.. no joy.
I just tried the whole process again. I formatted the card so the only thing on it was the firmware file. Still no joy.
Next I will try a brand new sd card. If that don't work I will go into settings and reset the scope to factory settings. It will resort back to the latest successful firmware before any changes were made and try to update from there.
At the end of the day, if I can't get the wifi to work so I can display live video on the tablet or cell phone, so be it. I can still record, play and post videos through you tube. If I can't get sound to record, so be it... I know what my voice sounds like and I don't need to hear the gun go bang bang. I will miss a squirrel's dramatic plea fer mercy with his last dying breathe.. that's a bummer.
That said, I remember reading someone report that sound don't work in a certain record setting.. I'll look into that some more. Maybe a factory reset will solve that.

Yep, the loop side of the velcro was still on the scope. My power bank is a tad bigger... about the size of a deck of cards but half as think. It's a bit big to put there. The pouch will work out great. It also provides space for a few other things such as mags or spare batteries.
I'll post pics tomorrow.

Cool you are getting it sorted out best as can be, reason for me never liking it was the buttons did not respond in freezing conditions I wanted to use it in. The Thor LT and the chap china ones work fine in cold for me.

Did you ever have it linked with wifi to a cell phone or tablet?
Not much cold weather here in the south so the buttons won't be a problem.

I did have it linked to my old Galaxy S4 mini. so it did it once.

Hmmm... maybe I'll dig through some of my old cell phones and see what I can come up with.

Might also e-mail ATN and see if there is a patch or work around.

Did you look in the settings for the Scope SSID and Password? It should be under WiFi on the last tab of the menu. Then just search for the name of the scope and enter the password that’s on the scope. It should connect if the WiFi is turned in the scope. The scope acts as the router and you won’t be able to connect to your home WiFi while connected to the scope.
-
Yeah, I had all that figured out... but thanks.
Ok, here's what's up....
I called ATN and spent about 20 minutes talking to a real nice guy. He didn't have to do that because it's a discontinued model and most places will just tell you they don't support them any more. But this guy hung with me.
So, this unit is not the X sight HD II.. it's the one before that... just the X Sight HD. That's why it would just ignore that firmware update. However, there is a more current update than the one that was installed.
I d/ld the correct revision and bada bing. In slicker than snot.
Then I did a factory reset like the instructions said and it went through the process and rebooted a couple times. It reconfigured wifi and I got real hopeful. Next I formatted that sd card to get rid of that update so the scope wouldn't see it again.
The wifi reconfig was false hope because the tech already told me the same thing Paul did.... Obsidian 4 will not work on that model and they have no plans to change it.... firmware can't fix it.. it's in the hardware.
Also... the original release of Obsidian will not work on newer android devices... and never will.
But, all is not lost...
Betty Lou found 4 old cell phones and she's going through them to see if any will take a charge. If they have wifi and the older Obsidian, they should be good to go. The other possibility is to find an older tablet on Ebay, a yardsale or a second hand store... maybe even a pawn shop.
The goal is only to have a display on the shooting bench for others to watch the action... it's not a game changer.
-
Next...
The tech dug up the old manuals and info that they have and we, the consumer may not. Like I said.. the guy jumped through hoops. He confirmed that there is a microphone and there should be sound on the recordings.
There are 3 possibilities..
The firmware update may fix a possible glitch.
After the factory reset, there may be a setting that will be reset and it will work.
Or, the fatal one, the built in microphone has gone bad.
-
Here are the new firmware changes...
RELEASE NOTES:
New feature:
New reticles shape
New reticle colors
Power off" dialog
ATN logo on photo and video
The one that makes me the most happy is the Power Off dialog. That 3 second countdown drove me nuts. If you didn't release that power button at just the right time it would just power back on. Many times I just uncapped the batteries in frustration. Now when you power off it brings up a yes or no option.
The display also seems so much brighter and clearer but that may just be due to going back to factory settings.
-
That's as far as I went.... I didn't want to OD on fun for one day. ;)
Tomorrow I will set the time and date, do the one shot zero (because I'm sure I lost it), move stuff around on the heads up display, turn things on or off (I don't need GPS, GEO tagging or anything else the draws battery power) and check sound on recordings.
Anyways.. we are definitely going in the right direction.
-
BTW... I miss stated the firmware release that was in the scope...
It was 1 8 07 343.
The new release is the one I posted above and the one that is in it now.
You'll notice I changed the title in this post to remove the II.

Looks like you will have more bells and whistles, than with the version I was running, I did have balistic profiles set up that was handy for switching ammo or guns. 8)

Yeah, that's one of the features I had't got into yet... I was very limited with the battery situation. All that is gone now so I can spend unlimited time exploring and setting it up.
-
Back in the berries with the firmware update.
Got my one shot zero set up, my preferred reticle style and color and the time and date.
The power bank pouch is going to work out good.

I am trying to remember if there was the sunshade sent along , as well as the plastic deodorant can cap with hole in for bright light filtration ???

Yep, got them both. You can see them on the scope in the picture above... thanks.

Has anyone tried the Micro HDMI to a monitor or a TV with HDMI input?

I have not, but interesting question... I think I have an old monitor laying around somewhere, I may have to dig it up and goive it a try...
-
Yeah, I was thinking about running to Radio Shack and see if the have a micro hdmi to hdmi cable to check it out. I have a feeling it will only play recorded pics and vids. It might not do live view. If it does I would consider mounting a pawn shop 24" monitor/tv above the roll up door in the Red Shed. Heck, with the wifi I have in there I could stream all kinds of hunting and shooting channels. I'd be just a sleeping bag away from living in there. ;)
-
I checked the power bank this morning and I was surprised. After all that messing with it yesterday it still had all 4 lights lit. (charge indicator) I know I was running off of it because it asks if you want to use external power every time you turn it on.

I found this article, it's old [but then so is the scope], but it seemed to be pretty informative.
https://smallarmsreview.com/atns-x-sight-hd-the-best-of-both-worlds/

Quote from article...
The new X-Sight also allows the user to take photos or high definition 1080p X 30 frames per second video of anything seen through the scope by pushing a single button on the keypad. The images or video are then stored on the micro SD card in the scope. The scope can use micro SD cards up to 32 MB capacity. Once the pictures are taken or the video recorded they can be downloaded by either plugging in a micro USB cable to the scope or removing the card and using a card reader to transfer the files to your PC. The scope can also be plugged into a monitor or a high definition TV via the HDMI port to view the images or video. The scope also has a microphone so that your recorded videos have sound as well. When the scope is recording video there is a red dot that flashes inside the viewfinder as well as a digital counter that tells the user how long they have been recording. Another added feature of the scope’s still camera function is that it can be set to take up to 10 shots in a series timed at up to 15 seconds between shots.
End Quote..
The high lighted sentence leads me to believe that only vids and pics can be viewed with the micro hdmi cable to a monitor/tv and not live view. This is what I suspected. But it would still be cool to record and watch your hunts/kills/target shooting on the big screen straight from the unit. I think I may pick up a cable just for this option.
Paul.. thanks for that link.

Betty Lou ventured out to the Red Shed today. Seems like if she wants to spend time with me lately she find me there. :o
She sat down at the shooting bench and I was at the workbench working on the PID box. I heard her say "How do you turn this on"?
Turned around to find her with the Avenger that the X Sight is mounted on and trying to look in the scope. I told her how to turn it on and after a few minutes of looking around with it she raise up with an amazed look on her face.. "This thing looks like a flippin video game". I said "Yeah, but this one really shoots".
So I loaded up a mag with the cast .24 pellets and turned her loose. She blew through that mag and asked for another. "Umm.. you know how to load a mag, have at it".
Betty Lou tested, Betty Lou approved.
-
;D Yes I think that video game was my first response, after experiencing that N/V scope also.
-
I think what makes it seem most like a video game is the, in night vision mode, there is a fraction of a second lag between the sound of the pellet hitting the backstop and what you see in the scope. I mean, it's barely noticeable but it's there. It's not like that in day mode. It's pretty cool.
-
The power went out this morning for an hour and a half or so. So I went to the Red Shed and rolled up the door to cast light on the shooting bench and fell into thought.
The .25 Avenger checks more of my boxes than any other PCP I own... 40fpe, accurate out to 50 and beyond, light weight, side lever, great trigger, 48 regulated shots per fill.... just a pleasure to shoot.
Putting this honkin' scope (2.5 lbs.) takes some of that away. The gun wearing this scope will have a specific purpose.... day and night shooting videos. Be it pesting, plinking or reactive targets. Not really a setup for shots of opportunity.
Enter the .25 Xisico Sentry HC basket case gun. The recrowning of the barrel. Some orings and some other tinkering has really brought this gun back to the level others are experiencing with it. I have 2 of these Sentrys so it's no big deal to leave one it the shooting bench all set up as the dedicated ATN DV/NV scope cam gun. The Avenger can again enjoy wearing the EZ Tap Accushot SF scope that suits it so well.
Besides... what the heck else was I going to do for an hour and a half with no power? ;)
-
There is a side story to this and even though it may be better suited for a different gate, I thought I would post it here because the previous post already sets the stage....
While I was sitting at the shooting bench in semi darkness swapping out scopes and rails (putting the scope on the Sentry required robbing the dovetail to picatinny rail adapter from the CP1/CP2/PP800 hybrid) I saw a squirrel scamper across maybe 10 yds out the roll up door. Another followed close behind, then another and another. I swear on everything I have.. 5 of them in a row ! And another out by the backstop/pellet trap.
2 of them ran up a small tree still in full view and the back one pounced on the front one and did that thang right there in front of me. :o What a time to have 3 guns, 2 scopes and a camera scope sitting on the bench within reach and not one of them able to take a shot.
Betty Lou came around the corner only to add salt to the wound... "You didn't see all those squirrels"?
-
;D Never fails!
-
True that...
It's ok, I want them to feel safe.... for now.... muhahahahaha.

Had a couple items show up from other members.
First was an older Kindle Fire 7. It works great but it's Amazon proprietary and it takes too much hoop jumping to get it to play nice with Goggle Play Store for the older ATN Obsidian app. It will now live in Betty Lou's kitchen for her to store recipes on.
Next is an Insignia 11.6 android tablet w/detachable keyboard. This one is going to work. No proprietary and very welcoming to Google Play Store. I did all the start up stuff to get it going (It came to me with a fresh factory reset). I d/l and installed Brave browser and scrapped Chrome. Next I went for the Play Store and it automatically picked up the associated files along with anything Google (maps, weather, voice search and lots of other things Google, some useful and some will be removed). I turned off the trackers. It also has You Tube app that I can link to my existing login and post videos to share.
Next was the real test.. the whole purpose behind all of this... ATN Obsidian. Not the new Obsidian 4 (that on don't work on the X Sight HD). It had to be the original ATN Obsidian for Android.
Badda bing... it jumped right on it like it grew in there.. ;)
That's where I am now.

Opened a Vimeo account and I'm learning to edit videos from the scope to a format that will upload to Vimeo and post here on the GTA. They will upload straight out of the scope but Vimeo does not seem to like the format that the editing software I used.
Not really looking for suggestions... just need to find the best free editing software.
