Title: Missed opportunity for coyote and myself
Post by: max115 on May 26, 2023, 11:23:48 AM
Both the coyote and myself have missed an opportunity in this episode.  The coyote missed its chance to a big meal and I missed the chance to tag it.

The farmer told me he had an injured cow that had died on Friday night.  So I setup Saturday and Sunday night for an ambush, hoping the coyote would come to feed on the dead cow that was scheduled to be picked up on Monday.  I was excited with this opportunity and figured this would be an easy hunt and I should be able to finally get my coyote #7.

Unfortunately, timing was not on my side again.  The coyote didn't show up at the bait when I was there for two nights.  However, I had accidentally encountered it on first night as I was leaving the site.  I had packed up all my gear and was about to drive off when I turned on my engine and headlights.  The coyote was standing 30 yards away in the middle of the road.  hey!!  Talking about bad timing.  It was of course long gone before I had a chance to grab my gun from my case and remounted my NV scope.

I returned the following night and still didn't have any luck.  It wasn't meant to happen I guess.  The cow was picked up on Monday afternoon so I didn't return to do another stakeout.  Well, I blew another chance again because the coyote returned and hung around for a long time.  My trail cam captured many footages of it lurking and sniffing around the spot where the cow was.

Frustrating that I didn't get the timing right but that is hunting, right?  Hopefully one day I will encounter it...

Max , Your having the same luck as me , only me w/ g-hogs & rats ! Farm hands have told me ," shoulda' been here yesterday , there were rats (or) g-hogs") in that barn or that field ! I just got a msg late yesterday that some fields are being cut . Family is coming in a few days for the holiday we're and getting the house ready . Might be able to slip away the afternoon for a short hunt w/ the Airmaks Katran that's tuned for Knockout Slugs . May need to have a .22 Magnum along also .
Well Max , "Endeavor to persevere " , the right time will come .

@martrage.  Yes, always the case but I have been lucky in the past to make my encounters with the coyotes that I did tag.  If it is that easy, then what would be the challenge, right?  Lol.  Thanks for watching and I am sure you will get your chances as well.

Even more frustrating to get a shot at one and only to see it on trail cam come back the next night where you know for sure you missed. One appeared in a trail 150ft away from me so I took the shot with my 9mm. Oh well he's just eating my rats anyway.

Max these Yotes have an incredible sense of smell and if you were near the cow in last few days they will not come near it.
