I recently rehomed my mid 80s vintage 880 so I set out to build another one. I had an 89 model laying around that needed rebuilding so I dove into it and had a bit of a time. After replacing the seals it was a pain to get the piston started. After assembly I ran it over the chrono and it was way low on power. Tore it back down and yup, it cut the piston o-ring. Another new o-ring later and the same thing. I pulled the pump assembly out of an 83 model (no diamonds on forearm) and compared. A new o-ring on that piston inserted with normal resistance. I removed it and compared the 89 and 83 model pistons. The 83 model piston appeared to have a deeper ring groove and about 0.05" more piston height. I went ahead and put the 83 pump assembly in the 89 and ran it over the Chrono. WOW, 715 FPS with 10.65 H&N Barracudas (20 pumps). That's over 12 FPE. I wonder if the parts were just manufacturing variances or if the piston and VBs might have changed in the 80s. Perhaps the 83 had a higher compression piston and the 89 had a smaller compression chamber. This gun is now building more FPS/FPE than any brass tube gun I have built before. I put a 1977 piston spring on them before testing, I bridged the receivers, put an aluminum muzzle adapter on it and Rons seal and trigger mod. Any who I won't be rehoming this one. I have another early 80s and early 90s that I will pull the pistons and compare.

Just finished this gun and got it sighted in, bridged receivers, blued barrel shroud, 1977 piston spring, machined muzzle adapter, Ron's Trigger mod, all new viton seals. Ready for when squirrel season rolls around.

I have such a soft spot for 880s. Interesting work getting that kind of power out of what so many call a "cheap" airgun.
Nice optic too! Too much scope looks so nice on these guns.

Thanks, the scope is $30 on Amazon and a good deal imo. 3x9 with lighted retinal and mil dot, but the rings have to be swapped out. I get the rings from Amazon also for $10. They are also a good deal imo.

Ah, I thought I recognized that scope. A friend of mine had one (or a similar one) atop his 880.

I'd love to see pictures of the two pistons
Can you see any difference visually?

I threw the unused parts in the spare bin so no way to know which one it was. The main visual difference was the o-ring groove looked much wider on the lower power piston. Probably another one of those like Ron recently posted about, except the ring groove was too shallow and too wide imo.

Was it cast or machined?

They are cast. I don't remember if the grooves are cast in or turned out.

It is possible to insert the piston into the pump tube outside the gun, then install from the pump pivot end.
That might make it easier to assemble without damaging the piston O-ring.

Is that machined muzzle adapter a commercial item?

Did you make the machined one yourself?

Did you make the machined one yourself?
I did, I make them for all my guns except the 76 model which is all original.
