Hello all,
I have had, and sold, a few bullpups, and haven't really liked any of them. Recently, my cousin picked up a Taipan Veteran Standard. I really like the look of it, it feels pretty good in the hands, and the trigger is absurdly nice. I need to bug him to do some shooting one of these days, and see if I like shooting it.
I am in the market for something with more oomph than my Air Arms S510, to try to cut through the wind when shooting at starlings and house sparrows. I have a few tins of .22 JSB Monster Redesigns (25 grain) left over from when I sold my Brocock magnum.
Can a .22 Taipan Veteran Standard be tuned to shoot the 25 grain Monsters, or would a Veteran Long be required?
Thanks,
-jsg

AZ, I would opt for the Long as it's simple added power having a longer barrel. You could then purchase a plenum extension from Tony @ Talon Tunes if you need even more power to sling the .22 Redsigned.
-
Make sure to pick up a current model with the cocking lever moved forward. It made a great gun greater.
-
I am rather tempted to stick to the older model, just because of the no-double-feed feature.

Hello all,

How do you like the cocking lever positioned—rear or forward?
-
Forward would be better, in a vacuum. Cocking lever rearward is fine, though, as I can go over with my left hand. The thing I didn't like about other pups (Hatsan Flashpup and FX Wildcat) was the balance of them, and the Taipan felt better in that regard. Felt less top heavy and it just begged to be held offhand, snuggled right up to my cheek, and that trigger...
Uh oh.... Is the reason they call it the Taipan because, when you pick one up, it bites you and then you have to have one?
-
Or 3 I have 2 compacts and a standard and if I could find a taipan mutant shorty .22 would be a great addition to my bunch.

Have you had a chance to try the Avenger bullpup? Balance seems decent. I really don’t care for the rear lever though.
-
What is the difference between the veteran and the mutant? Mutant just an older model?

Exactly ... MUTANT came out @ 9 or so years ago, VETERANS replaced them perhaps @ 5 or 6 years ago

I've got a Veteran Compact.
On one hand, the Veteran is ok, but like others better. While I do like a good trigger, I'm not a Taipan trigger fan-boy. Nice, yeah, but not any better than many others.
One MAJOR key to a good trigger...is proper adjustment !
I've got many guns, all (but two) short / compact bullpup designs.
The Kalibur gun Argus (45 & 60), the AirMaks Krait's are great guns shooting freehand.
Sorry the guns are sort of out of order !
-
@Mike-
Love the look of the red dots on those guns. Also, you have much better eyes than me.
I like the looks of the AirMaks guns, the Katrans in particular, and they seem like a good price for a lot of gun. I even like the Caiman: that ugly, smooth, porpoise-like shell around it is endearing in a way, like an Oldsmobile Roadmaster.

Hi, my name is AZ, and I am a PCP addict. I was having a really hard time resisting the temptation to buy a Taipan Veteran, but I am no longer tempted at all...
Just got off the phone with Tony at Talon Tunes. He is going to be dialing in a Veteran Compact in 25 and sending it my way. That much power in that small a package seems like it will be a lot of fun. Gotta start practicing offhand shots for squirrel this fall and winter.
The Taipan will probably steal the West Hunter 3-12x44 FFP from my Brocock Ranger to start. After I get a feel for weight, balance, and ergonomics, I can decide if I want to get a little bigger or a little smaller scope for the Taipan.
I really like the Airmax scope on my Air Arms S510 w/ the AMX reticle, so maybe one of the Airmax compacts, 3-12x40 or 4-16X44, will be a good fit.

One thing about Taipans in general: they have less complaints than just about any other higher-end PCP. I think we have a couple members of the NUAH club who shot .177 to join (I could be wrong).
I've been wanting a Mutant or Veteran for a long time, but ended getting a Lelya 2.0 for a good price used- the Lelya has cocking levers on both sides so it shoots superb offhand either right- or left-handed... But I still eventually want a Mutant or Veteran- though I know if my wife picked it up she would claim it. She loves bullpups.

A sure sign you found a good-un.

No doubt about that. She enjoys traditinal archery, disc golf, paddling a kayak or canoe, and just hanging out equally well.
I've been tempted by the Taipan for a number of years. It was at the top of my "I want it" lists until the Leshiy (Classic) came out. Since then I've bought the Leshiy and a used Lelya, but I will still someday get a Taipan.

I will make sure to post pictures of mine, so you can admire it from a distance (along with everyone else who posts pics of theirs) until one finds a spot in your wife's, I mean your, collection

Def can’t go wrong with a taipan. The vulcan 3 is also a great gun and a good one to consider.
-
Taipan = CZ barrel = ultimate accuracy.

AZ.....CONGRATULATIONS! Tony will set you up nicely 👍. Let us know how much you like it!

I am looking forward to it. I am curious to see how it will work for me. I have a big head and a long neck, so I think I will be getting pretty far forward on the little taipan compact, moving the scope farther forward. Figuring out ergos will be the first order of business, and once the scope position is determined, size and weight of scope to get good balance will be next.

Well....I have a roundy squarish head with long arms and I did get my RAW to fit after many tweaks even with AR furniture so if I can get a rifle to fit, I'm sure you can more easily...😂👍

Just Some Guy,
Bet you'll like it. I've got a Taipan Veteran Compact and Long, both in .25. I bought the Long for the power.
I recently got the Compact and if I had started with it, I probably would not have got the Long. The Compact is so handy, I carry it on the seat of my truck as I can maneuver it in the cab to take a shot out the window (ground squirrels - private property). Besides the length of the Long it is about 1 1/2 pounds heavier. I've killed squirrels out to 80 yards with the Long, and only about 60 yards so far with the Compact.
The factory settings on the Compact put a 25 grain JSB out at approx. 910 fps, the 34 grainer's that I shoot, IIRC chrono'd at ~800 fps. I haven't played with it much at the range yet, as I just got my tank back from being re-hydro'd, so as time avails I'll see what it can do.
Only seen pictures of the Taipan 2. I really like forward cocking (had a Veteran 2), but I would not want to give up the anti-double feed (Is that not a feature on the Taipan2?). I'm sure some don't need it, but I do... double feeds are a minor annoyance at the range, but hunting with the Vulcan it cost me a few squirrels. Also, the Taipan 2 Compact is no longer "compact" with the moderator on the end of the barrel (I haven't seen the dimensions of the Taipan 2 Compact, but the original Taipan Compact is 23.5").

There is no taipan 2 compact! They seem to have forgotten the gun that made them famous.
-
miksatx,
There is a Taipan 2 Compact, besides having them for sale Utah Airguns has a picture, but I don't see the stat's on the length.
Perhaps you're referring to the length now that it has a moderator on the end of the barrel?

Wow you’re right! But there was no mention of them coming out!

Lol it’s not a compact has the same 550mm barrel as the standard.

Chances are it would be hers. ::) I've been eyeballing the RTI guns for a while, though the FX Panthera is intriguing.
The Taipans have phenomenal triggers, great accuracy, and very few complaints. Where some might consider it ugly, I view it the way I view my Leshiy- where form follows function and function is beautiful.
-
The fist PCP I got was a wood stocked Hatsan Flashpup, and I always liked the look of it; slightly steampunk in appearance. I think the Taipans are similar. There is something cool about their funky lines.
-
The Veteran Compact arrived today. The stock looks like it has OK grain, but the finish is poor. I think it will get a stripping and refinishing at some point. Looks like Tony at Talon Tunes set it up zipping the 25.4 grain pellets along at ~890fps. I loaded up a pellet, stepped out the door, and took a pot shot at a tree, and the pellet impact was louder than the report of the gun. I think my .22 Air Arms S510 Carbine, with a .25 Sumo, is louder than this Taipan. That such a short little gun can make over 44 ft/lbs and be that quiet is truly impressive.
Over lunch, I put the Westhunter 3-12X44 scope from the Brocock Ranger on it. Medium height rings are pretty much perfect, and the scope isn't so far forward that it feels front heavy. It fits me very well, and I really like the ergos. It is a really nice day out there, without too much wind, so I should get it zeroed after work today without much trouble.
-
I had a small issue with the Taipan, it was firing as I finished cocking it, just as the pellet loaded in. Finger was nowhere near the trigger.
I called up Tony and he suggested rotating the sear engagement screw just a little bit CCW. I took the stock off, turned the screw 1/8 of a turn and the problem went away.
My metric allen key set was at my old house though, as I am still in the process of moving, so I had to drive there to grab them. I didn't get a chance to get the scope zeroed but hopefully this evening.
-
I don't like bullpups, but I have a Veteran Standard in .22 and love it; great trigger, wide tuning range, best magazine sysytem around, robust build, accurate. The right-side rear lever is perfect for me. I'm right handed and shoot a lot from a seated position with shooting stix. It is absolutely intuitive for me to reach over the comb with my left hand to cock, and I never have to come out of my shooting position. It might sound odd, but it works perfectly for me. As for the forward lever, most folks prefer it, or think they do, but IMO, it's simply an unnecessary complication. And the new free floated barrel design is, I believe a less secure system than the robust attachment of the 12 screw tower support. And I have never, never heard a complaint of shifting POI, although that is give as a reason for the change. I just don't believe it. In short, the old design is a simpler, more robust build, and one that is a proven tank. I can't speak to shooting the super heavy pellets, but mine shoots the JSB 18 great. If that is your priority, it makes sense to get the Long version.
-
I have one of the somewhat rare Ukrainian built Veteran longs with the CZ barrel. Although I have an adapter for an LDC, I don’t use one since it’s very quiet as is. Someone above mentioned the trigger and I agree, it’s match grade. As for POI shift, it doesn’t exist on my TVL and, as mentioned above, it’s built like a tank. I’ve had mine for about 4 years now and, like most Veteran owners, have had zero problems. I’m not a hunter but do have this continuous battle with groundhogs, and one shot kills are normal at 60 and 70 yards from a rest.
-
Congratulations! Have fun shooting your new Compact Vet!
