So I bought a gun lot the other day for $40 off ebay. I bid on it thinking I wouldn't get it but surprisingly I won. There was a Crosman A.I.R. , a Daisy 880 and a child's toy gun.
I bid on it to begin with for the air 17, I had one as a kid and wanted one again for nostalgic reasons. I looked at the 880 and saw it had a metal receiver, after seeing different threads on them I had a slight interest. Mainly because I saw some of you hunting with them and the simple mods available.
Well they arrived today, I gave the kids toy to a coworker who has young kids, looked at the AIR 17 for a bit and then looked the daisy over. First thing I noticed was it was way heavier than I remembered as a kid and it had a metal pump arm. Something was off though, it just didn't look like I remembered. Then I realized it didn't have the black diamond on the fore arm. So I did a little research and it appears that this is one of the first original models? The bad part is it needs a paint job. Especially the barrel, any recommendations? I'll post pics when it isn't raining

You may want to run this through the Daisy Gate. Mark might pop up and tell you exactly when with a serial number. No doubt by you description though.

Sorry, I meant to post to daisy gate

Thank you Bill, this is my first 880 ever lol, I didn't like them when I was a kid, my thought was as easy as it is to pump, it can't be as powerful as my crosman lol. I wanted a wooden crosman pumper so bad back then, used to drool over the Sheridan in the magazines!

You have a 70s or early 80s gun. Most likely smooth bore clamp on barrel. These links should help identify the year and features.

Many Daisy's are very capable for hunting and achieve "high" power levels for small game. 25 to 30 fpe with plenty of power for 50 yard shots on small game.

April of 1984 if I read it correctly, and it has rifled barrel stamped into the barrel shroud. Thank you Patrick

That is a good gun, they are very accurate and well made. It does not make the power the newer guns do but it is plenty for small game with in 30 to 35 yards and very easy to shoot. That year is a transition year so it might have a clamped on or pressed in barrel. The pressed in barrels seam to make more power in my experience but both are capable. It is a rifled barrel so it will group pellets well. I prefer the H&N Barracuda pellets for the vintage rifled barrel 880s. For best performance I highly recommend getting Ron's reseal kit and his trigger mod. If you are interested in restoring it you should remove the receivers to see if the barrel is clamped on or pressed in so you can let Ron know which seal kit you need. His seal kits update the chamber seal to the new seal design and are cheaper than just buying the old chamber seal. If it is a clamp on barrel his barrel to valve body seals are better than factory and about the only game in town. His trigger mod is fantastic and reduces trigger pull down to 2 lbs in most cases without affecting the function of the safety. I installed Rons seal kit and trigger mod on all my vintage 880s. I have a 1983 880 with pressed in barrel that shoots 10 FPE with the pellets I recommended, I also have an 85 and 89 model that shoot right at the same FPE. Those guns are pretty consistent. Congrats on the find, that price was fantastic.

Sounds like fun pinker, I doubt I would ever hunt with it, but I still want to do the upgrades you mentioned just for plinking and the occasional squirrel. I only have this and a 140 for pumpers, I like to shoot targets n cans with them because with the 140 all you need is about 4 pumps lol. Oh, I have a couple 13xx for pumpers, but I don't really consider them rifles. Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it.

I have two of the Sears Eldorado 880's from 1973. One needs restoration.
