Silver Streak posted on local craigslist. Appears to be early 50's has the hole on side of receiver. Is it worth the $400?
-
A lot to pay for a rifle with a hole in it?
-
That wood looks to be in beautiful condition from what I can see.
I would say this gun is definitely worth it, I'm not sure about that hole but even if it's not factory I don't think it really detracts much.
Maybe I'm just biased though because I'm a pumper guy and think the Sheridan C series is about the best airgun ever made.
-
Not to me it ain't.
Wonder what the hole was for?
-
The earliest ones had that hole. I have a 57-58 (no difference between the two) and it doesn't have that hole. It's pre- 57.
Looks beautiful, from the two pict's you posted. If you could see it in person check out the solder offering
$200 and taking it up to $250 would be respectable to me. It does look nice with those limited photos!
Cheers!

The hole on the right side of the ireceiver on early model C is to allow pin removal on Bolt. It is found on early Silver or Blue Streaks in the following date range (1951–1956).
Also the soldered on rear sight with knurled adjustment screw and straight bolt arm are also istrong hints of a very early model dating to between 1949 and 1951 this can be confirmed by the design of the front sight which has a slight diagonal back cut.
If it is an early C model Silver Streak $250 is where I would start at, but I have seen several early models go for $375 - $400. I myself would not go above $325.
Here is a general list of changes that may help you dig down to determine your age range: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheridan_Products
Attached are the two I own: 1952/53 Blue Streak, restored in May 2021, still looking for correct stock.
and 1953/54 Silver Streak, great shooter, inherited from Grandfather.
-
Bet they researched selling prices on eBay. I agree that price is high
Didn’t the earliest Steaks have matching wood too?
-
Thanks for the clarifications, Rich and Elroy.
I doubt that I'd pony up that kind of money for the one mentioned by the OP, but considering owning one over a lifetime... It would be well worth it.
Cheers,
J~

Many early 50's Silver Streaks will bring $400 . That one looks like it needs some TLC, though. It is all according to its condition.
-
It looks like a nice rifle from the photos posted. The bolt handle looks great; no pitting as is often seen. The knurled windage knobs on the rear sight are present; one is not missing as is often seen. The wood looks to have original finish with no cracks or missing chips, and the nickel finish looks undamaged. IF it is a nice original condition rifle then $400 is not out of line for a 1951 Silver Streak. More photos or an in person inspection is needed to determine condition.
-
The Sheridan offered for sale on Craigslist is a mid to late 1950 or perhaps early 1951 rifle and would probably sell for around $400 on eBay. At an airgun show, or on Craigslist, a lot less. If it was an original 1949 variation rifle, try as much as $1,000 on eBay. The 1949 rifles have what collectors call a slab side stock and pump handle, and no hole in the breech. The differences between '49 and '50 can be observed in the pics. The rifle on the left is a '49 version, on the right, a '50. The rifle on the right is identical to the Craigslist rifle discussed in this thread.
-
I was thinking that the hole might be original because it vaguely rang a bell, but I really wasn't sure.
I love the guns, but truth be told the one I have is all I need and because of that I'm not exactly very well studied on all the differences through the years.
I know just enough on most major differences to steer somebody in the right direction.
-
I love all the Sheridans , but I don’t own any newer than 1979.

Do you not like them after that, or simply not have any ?
-
It is just me. I have only owned a couple newer that 1977, when Crosman took over. Although I like all of the older ones, I am partial to the ones made up to 63.
-
Influencers...
Reading this I just had to grab old "Sylvia" of the rack and take her out for a few shots. She's a '51 silver streak. Altho she's not in mint condition, she has all her silver, original non cracked chipped or bruised wood and she pumps, hold air and shoots like she should.
And best of all, she's all mine.
-
I have 2 more vintage streaks...
Eddie is a near mint '68 BS with sentimental value to me and ole Copper. Another '68 BS who came to us needing some love. I finish stripping him down to the brass and put a nice refinished stock on. He was supposed to live life as a truck gun but Betty Lou wasn't having none of that and laid claim to him. Ask her what her favorite airgun is.... COPPER .
Yeah, I don't want any of the newer ones either.
Had a couple and sold them off.
-
I remember Sylvia & Copper well. That was some years ago.
-
Yep, still got all 3, they live on the wall rack right above Betty Lou's chair.

You mean when Benjamin took over in 1977 or when Crosman took over in 1991 ?

are both of those pictures from the same gun? the top pic looks a lot rougher than the bottom pic. the gun in the bottom pic appears to be in decent condition.
based on current ebay prices, then the gun is with $400. Whether it's worth that to you or not is a different story.

only because you are getting technical..... ;D Crosman didn't buy Benjamin until 1992 (Feb, 28th).
-
I also read that Crosman let Benjamin run it as they wished and didn't step in on design until '94.
-
In today's market I can see $400 for an early SS in that condition being a fair price.
Heck Blue Streaks along those lines are fetching $250 easy now.

Yes. Thanks.

I have what I believe to be a 1949 model. Slab side no hole in breach. It's basically a parts gun now. Could never clear the barrel obstruction.
Here's the old thread form last year https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=196554.msg156289391#msg156289391 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=196554.msg156289391#msg156289391)

That's true for the most part. Starting Aug. 92, crosman made a change to the trigger mechanism and/or spring to solve a misfire issue. That's about the only change until 1994 when production moved to NY.

The issue was that the first Sheridan C/F9's and Benjamins with the sliding tang safety would fire with the safety engaged and the trigger pulled hard enough. In the original design, the rifles could be cocked with the safety engaged. Crosman issued a revised trigger to correct this problem. With the revised trigger, the rifle can only be cocked if the safety is off.
I would urge all of you to inspect any Sheridan or Benji you encounter with the sliding tang safety to determine if it has the defective first version trigger. Over the years, I've found and fixed four of these rifles.

Looks like a scam to me. Top pic shows some corrosion, but bottom pic doesn't. Also the bottom pic looks nice and clean. The gun is set up with a white background, while the top pic has a dark background and not as nice a pic.

The bottom Pic shows the right side, and the top shows the left side.
Whether they are sides of the same gun is unconfirmed, but the pics could be the same gun.

I did a little digging on the internet and a strange things occurred one of the pictures the OP posted can be seen on the following link:
https://www.icollector.com/Early-Sheridan-Silver-Streak-Pellet-Gun_i13828646 (https://www.icollector.com/Early-Sheridan-Silver-Streak-Pellet-Gun_i13828646)
It appears the rifle in the link sold on an internet site on September 23, 2012 for $250. At this time I would assume the local Craigslist offer is a scammer waiting to collect on someone. Could be wrong but I would walk away and fast.

Thanks for the detective work. Sure looks like the picture. Contacted the seller but have not heard back. CL location is local to me so it would be a face to face deal if its happens.

It's amazing to me that something as obscure as a 1950's air rifle is the subject of a scammer looking to steal someone's money. It's beyond me,
and hard to believe. Nothings simple anymore. :-\

I can't help but think the scammers in situations like this are or were once involved in the particular hobby their scam is related to.
Either that or they have learned that airguns or knives...ect can be valuable so they Google " what XYZ are valuable in the US " to find their scam.
-
Agreed, sad times we live in scammers all over the place. Due to their methods I am nearly down to just looking and buying local and in person and from the classified ad section of this site, mostly from people I see as long time members or sellers. The disappointing part of scammer activity is the limitations to find items you don’t see in my state, still better than losing money on something too good to be true. One site I have never considered purchasing anything from is Craigslist, just way too scetchy in my book.
-
I have quite a few Sheridans & occasionally put one up for sale. I have sold many to other members of this site in the past, too . If you send me a PM telling me what you are interested in , I will look in the stable.
-
I've bought 2 from Steve and I will vouch for him.

I have 3 that I bought from Steve and he is stand up guy.

I have a personal preference for the earlier Blue Streaks and have 1 needing a reseal coming this afternoon, USPS.
But if I was looking for Silver … https://www.gunbroker.com/item/977898798 (https://www.gunbroker.com/item/977898798) … this one looks like a beaut.
