Title: Pushing the envelope just for giggles. Beeman R7
Post by: Lt. Dan on February 12, 2023, 10:03:46 PM
Looking across the site I see a lot of guys and gals zero their Hw30/R7 at18 yards. I zero my R7-.177 at 25 yards.

I'm using a Hawke Airmax 2-7x32AO set at 7x and shooring Air Arms 7.87gr 4.52mm pellets. Today it was sunny, 58° and a mild Easterly 5 mph breeze. Perfect for a little plinking.  This afternoon around 4:00 I stepped out on the patio and shot around 100 pellets.

At 15-20 yards I aim 1/2 mil•dot under and dead on at 25 yards.  At 30 yards I use a 1/4 mil•dot holdover; at 35 yards a 1/2 mil•dot holdover; at 40 yards 1 mil•dot holdover; and today I discovered that a 3 mil•dot holdover worked for 60 yards.

Today I was shooting primarily at 30 yards.  I was shooting 1-1/4" and 3/4" spinners hitting them pretty much every shot.

Just for giggles I hung a soup can at 60 yards. Using a 3 mil•dot holdover I hit it every shot. Wow, I love this rifle. I decided to try the 3" round plates at 60 yards.

I stopped just before 5:00 to watch the Superbowl.

I also zero at 25 yards & this ChairGun chart closely matches my HW95L .22.  2.5 MILS at 50 yards.

Dan and Deerstalker,  Thanks for posting this stuff.  If I understand correctly, it seems that the R7's lower powered .177 drops 2.2" between 25 and 60 yards, while the R9's higher powered 22 drops more that 4" between 25 and 50 yards.  I guess that's why people refer to the 22 as loopy.  However, Deerstalkers chart was encouraging for this 22 cal R9 shooter, as my urban back yard range has me shooting 15 to 30 yards. Anything more and I'll be in a lot of trouble.

Tom my R7 actually drops close to 9" from my zero at 25yds to 60 yards. I'll look tomorrow and report the exact number.  My Hawke Airmax 2-7x32AO is a second focal plane scope. The retical is Hawks AMX retical.

The Hawke AMX glass etched reticle is based on the spacing of a 10x Mil Dot. The AMX offers multiple aim points, useful when shooting air guns with loopy trajectories. Half Mil Dot spacing on the lower post provides increased aim points for long shots. The horizontal bars are calculated at 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 mil spacing. Hollow posts are segmented into mil spacing and can be used for bracketing.

Wow, my HW 50, zeroed at 27 yards, needs 4.5 milrads hold over at 55 yards. :-[

I'll check my HW50 .22 today, I know it's very loopy.

My 177 Hw30 with the same scope will hit beer cans consistently if I bracket the can between the 7th and 8th mildot rung on the hollow aiming ladder. That's on 6x with 7.33 JSBs. Lots of fun.

I forgot to add, like Lt. Dan said, that the AMX MRAD reticle is accurate when the scope is set to 10x.  At this setting one MRAD = 1.8" at 50 yards, .9" at 25 yards etc.  This may help.

Hawke Airmax AMX Scope Reticle
25 yard calibrate check, MRAD = Milliradian = MIL.
1.   One MRAD = 3.6” at 100 yards and 3.8” at 100 meters.
2.   One MRAD = .9” at 25 yards. (3.6/4 = .9)
3.   One MRAD of adjustment = 10 clicks. (Hawke scope one click = 1/10 MRAD)
4.   With the scope set on 10 x mag, 10 MRAD = 9” at 25 yards, 4.5” at 50 yards.
5.   Hawke Airmax AMX reticle has 10 MRAD top to bottom or side to side. 20 MRAD total using reticle & rectangles, horizontal and vertical.
6.   Set 2 small bulls or X marks on a target at exactly 9” apart, CTC, and look through the scope at 25 yards on 10 x mag to check the scope calibrate.
7.   Scope reticle of 10 MRAD should exactly intersect the bulls or X marks at 9” CTC.
MIL Cheat Sheet
MRAD is short for milliradian. MRAD = milliradian = mil. An MRAD reticle is marked out in mils and fractions of mils to allow us to estimate the range of distant objects and quickly get on target. There are 6,283 mils in a geometric circle and 1 mil equals 3.438 MOA.  MRAD or MIL and MOA is an angular, curved, measurement at a specific distance or range from the center of the circle.  (A small piece or section of the circumference).  6,283.185 Milliradians (MRAD) = 1 CIRCLE,  (Pi 3.14159 x 2 x 1000 = 6,283.185 mathematical, 17.45 milliradians per degree.)
   Inch   Mm           Cm   Inch
Clicks at 25 yards   1/10   1/20   1/10   1/20      MIL at 100y   9.14   3.600

Today, as promised. Scope still set with 25 yards zero, verified this morning. The first picture shows the results at 60 yards with the point of aim on the top target spot. Five shots hit between 9-10 inches low.

I did have a 5 mph wind today.

The second picture shows pellet impact with me using a 3 mil•dot holdover. The seven shots hit between 8.5"-10.5". The bottom three pellet impacts where with no wind.

I had a steel plate behind the target allowing me to recover the pellets.

I love shooting my R7 at “long range.” When it wears a scope, it is a Hawk 2-7. Right now it’s a Williams peep.

Everyone should have at least 3 of these: 1 scoped, 1 peeped and 1 open sights.

I love pushing the R7 out to 55 yards... Here's a video of me shooting spinners at 55 yards with my R7. These little guns are gems.

Nicely done video. 725fps with 8.2 is honking for a Hw30 platform. Definitely my favorite rifles.

Fwiw "offhand" shooting isn't leaning on a bench. Offhand is free standing with no bracing. I can't shoot offhand if my life depended on it. Technically your initial shooting position was bench rested. Your "offhand" was still bench shooting because you were seated and leaning on the bench.

Honestly that's how I normally shoot. It's not the right term but I call it shooting off my elbows. It's definitely tougher than rested, but it's certainly not offhand either.

In any event it was a great video. I know how hard it is to make a video of such quality. I have tried and have yet to do it.

Be well
Ron

Very cool, Dan!  The HW30/R7s are such plinking machines, there is no end to the fun had with them.

I have an R7 scoped and an HW30 with OEM iron sights.  I like Todd's idea of having three so a peep sight can also be used.  I have had a Williams peep on my HW30.

I love that reticle and after buying my first Hawke scope that had it, it kept me buying Hawke scopes.  I sure wish Hawke had continued to support the Chairgun program.  I tried downloading the "legacy" versions they have links to but they won't function on my MacBook or Windows notebook.  I used to really enjoy that program...

Maybe try again to make it work. ( does not work on 64-bit Windows - maybe does on 32-bit )

I love shooting my R7 at “long range.” When it wears a scope, it is a Hawk 2-7. Right now it’s a Williams peep.

Everyone should have at least 3 of these: 1 scoped, 1 peeped and 1 open sights.

I have three HW30S': scoped, peeped and red dotted and a scoped Beeman R7.  The Hawke 7-32 scoped guns are sighted in at 30 yards using 7.33 gr. pellets. These are,  incidentally, my favorite rifles.
