Title: Differences between Sheridan 392P & 397P
Post by: SILENT SQUIRREL on January 31, 2023, 06:54:42 PM
Hello
Considering getting a pumper
I'd like to know what the differences are between then Benjami Sheridan 397P & 392P, please.
Also, considering equal condition, is one to be preferred over the other?
Thanks
Edward

Do you mean besides the caliber? The 397 is .177 and the 392 is .22 respectively. I have a 397 I bought in a package deal, I like it well enough but for these old eyes the dang .177 pellets are too small.

Thanks @brewbear.
You have revealed the depth of my ignorance about them
I did not even know of the caliber difference.
Are they essentially the same rifle in different calibers?

If so, I'd consider the 397 for my purposes.
Plinking and back yard pesting, within 20 yards

I don't have a 392 but I can tell you the 397 in walnut stock is pretty nice.  Pumping, like any other pampers gets harder with the count. I shoot mine with 3 pumps, general plinking. iIt s an adult size rifle, I put a Williams peep sight on mine and it is pretty good even for these old eyes. It is accurate if I do my part but lately I've been playing with the Peacemakers so I haven't shot the rifles all that much.

The new synthetic 392 and I would imagine 397 is hard to pump past 4 pumps @ least for me….my 2014 392 seems easier…and my 1994 397 is one of my favorites….good luck

Below is a link to an older thread about the differences in the 2 Benjamin air rifles. NOTE ; I don't call these rifles Benjamin " Sheridan."

Agreed... Sheridan was a name brand bought by Crosman/Benjamin and they decided to hang the name on their product to deceive folks into thinking Sheridan had anything to do with it.
Classic hoodwinking..  :-\

... and the sheridan was only available in .20 (5mm) cal. Im also a big fan of the .177 cal as a everyday plinker. That been said, i do have a .22 also and she is a wonderful carbine. I shoot all mine at 5 pumps. The .22 is good enough at that power level to drop a squirrel at 25 yards. (565 fps).

I had a 392P with a soldered valve. Great gun.
I liked it better than my newer wood stocked 392 that had the cartridge valve and modern trigger group.

I don't either, but at least the earlier ones were crosmans top quality pride and joy line even if they just weren't the same.
Unlike today where you find the Sheridan name shamelessly used on a Chinese BB gun and a co2 replica pistol both in a caliber Sheridan never used.
Benjamin did right by the Sheridan company when they acquired them, but Crosman really didn't for very long if at all.
