I want to make an old style clamp on barrel 880 with a smooth bore barrel, an old style clamp on barrel 880 with a new rifled barrel. Is this just a matter of drilling a transfer port hole and the little flat that is in front of that?
Am I oversimplifying it?

Yes, pretty much.
The little flat indexes the barrel and keeps it in place.
However.....
I believe that a new 880 barrel may be too short...
It would be simpler to find an 881 barrel already set up for that...
Good thing about a smooth bore is that you can shoot all the BB's you want and not have to worry about destroying the rifling.

Ron is right on. Those older clamp smooth bores will never shoot like the newer guns power or distance wise. I have a 76 model and love to plick cans with it but it'll never produce the power and accuracy if my newer guns.

Why? What is restricting it's power?

It's not as efficient as the newer design with the abutment pin or the older pressed in barrels. I guess there is a flow restriction/loss at the tp and gasket. Non of my clamp barrel guns shoot as powerful as any of the other vintage.

Daisy has done much playing around with the chamber volume inside the valve body.
The new valves have more volume...until the seal abutment is installed...the nose takes up way more volume than the old style seal..
However, the 1977 abutment has a hollow abutment nose, but the greater swept volume of the pump gives mote psi per stroke.
Larger chamber volume builds less psi per given # of pump strokes.
Smaller volume builds more pressure but has less air to push the pellet upon firing.
I believe that to be responsible for the difference is "pop" when you pull the trigger...higher pressure makes a sharper crack..
I suspect that setup gives higher pellet speed as well.....
Don't mind me...I'm arguing with myself.....

I'm wondering if there are different abutment washers for the 1977. You have mentioned hollow abutments in reference to the 1977 multiple times but I have yet to see one out of 4.

Are your abutment retaining pins one long one or 2 short ones?
Mine are 2 short one. That would not be necessary with a solid abutment nose....

Mine is one piece.

All of mine are single pin. The ones I ordered from daisy are also solid core single pin.

IIRC my abutment had a "nose" that was stepped...
Larger dia where the seal went, then reduced hollow dia,. where it entered the VB
And a 2 piece pin.....
But that has been a while........might be something that I dreamt in a half asleep mode at 3 am............
