Title: Baikal IZH 46M Heads Up!
Post by: Gwelo on January 05, 2023, 11:44:48 AM
A fellow air gunner found this source for the "original" 46M in Canada.

https://canadashootingsupply.ca/product/7-baikal-izh-46m/

I have been in contact with Raman, the Director of CSS, who told me they have 15 left in inventory and will NOT be available again when gone. Also, they come in a cardboard box with the same spare parts as usual, manual, spare sight inserts, tools, cleaning rod and brush. These were inventoried in 2021 so mfg date should be 2020 or 2021. The example in the website pics is 2020 which is the latest I have ever seen. I'm not sure if that means CSS will no longer carry them or they are discontinued by Baikal and no longer available anywhere other than the used market.
Note the prices are in Canadian dollars. Current conversion rate is .7367 but can fluctuate. Also they are having a 12% off for their Christmas Sale. Don't know how long that will last. My order was $543.08 shipped to my door, should be here next Tuesday.

I have no affiliation with CSS.

I shoot my IZH46M a lot and I like it a lot.   I'd be pretty irritated if something went wrong with it and I couldn't fix it.   I wouldn't mind having a backup.

We have been ordering from Canada for several years.
Mine is very old.
About 33,000 pellets so far.

I just placed an order for one.   Hope to see it soon.  Mine came out to US 619, so guess I missed the sale.

Mine was delivered a few days ago. Built in late Nov., 2020. Very much the same as the last one I bought from Krale in 2018. Installed a red dot using the Sun Optics mount and ready to go.

Looking a little further it seems the grip has changed somewhat. This one fits me better without mods than previously. The left side has been sculpted out and the grip has been refined a little if memory serves. The barrel crown looks more like the AV model. Not sure about the breech. Any comments?

The AV46 has some type of plastic or fiberglass button near the breach to prevent excessive wear when closing the bolt.

That is just a little red dot, like the top of that lock piece,  My guess is to show that the gun is completely cocked and ready to fire.  If the breech is tilted up any it is obscured  and the gun would be on safe.  It just appears to be a slightly drilled indentation, possibly red paint. no plastic or nothing to do with wear when closing bolt, other than the dot it is identical to the IZH piece

Mine needed a l little modification to be comfortable.  That line on the left front where my fingers wrap around is just a little sharp, so about five minutes with a fine rasp and some increasingly fine sandpaper took care of that.  On the right side the little protrusion just under the triggerguard was also sharp so a bit of rounding on it also helped.  A quick wipe with some Birchwood casey orginal oil made the modification blend into the factory finish perfectly.  Now I could stand up and shoot all day without any irritation to my right hand.

I suppose.
One screw I have to tighten regularly is the one on the right side of the breech:
Part #20

No clue why it loosens.

I don't know what the long term outlook might be on parts, but I ordered some extra seals from Canada Shooting, pricy, but I have them .  Put them in a plastic bag in a small box and put them in the freezer for long term storage.  My wife allows me one of the door shelves for things like that, big bottles of superglue, epoxy, ect.

Keep the screws tight, o-rings with the minimum amount of oil, keep pressure on the seals when not using the pistol and it will last forever.
My partner in Kansas has documented (empty tins) of 50,000 shots on his used pistol.
He has no idea on how many times it was fired before it was given to him.

And, at 77, forever is moot.

I pleased to hear good things about it's long term reliability.   I don't store mine pressurized though.   Hope I'm not making a big mistake.

Ernie,
The Russian manual does not say to keep it pressurized but, we do with other pumpers so, I say “why not?”
We discussed the theory a lot here on the GTA.

Is the grip smaller now compared to the previous one you had?

What is the velocity of the pistol?

Thank You

Bolt latched or unlatched?

Looking at some of the other comments, does  he store it pressurized or not, and with breach open or closed.  I would think 50,000 shots on a used gun could give all of us a good idea of how to best store them.

Hmm.
I will check.
After he bought the AV46, he leaves the IZH46 in the chicken coup ready for cowbirds and chicken hawks.
The AV46 is in the basement with the pool table and big screen TV.

Note: When we are in Wyoming chasing antelope and prairie dogs the IZH46/AV46 come along for impromptu practice in the motel room.

Always unlatched to protect the seals on the breech.

The grip does seem a little smaller relying on memory. I’m between a medium and large and it feels pretty good. Will probably make some adjustments but shouldn’t take much.

Chronied at 443 avg with 7g RWS Meisterk’s.
