Post by: pblawler on October 20, 2022, 04:38:32 PM
Got a parts order form from Mah Daisy for the 1977.  Don't see the abutment though.

Time to experiment with the piston head and spring in an 880.

The abutment is in the Chamber Seal kit, the last item on the list...

I got a pump head assembly on the way to see how to adapt to the 880.
Should be interesting....

I'm thinking the abutment will be a gain also.

I'm pumped to see what this new "880" variant (1977) can do for the line up.  No pun intended.  I have hybradized the 1977 and 880 into my favorite hunting gun.  A 19 fpe setup good to 50 yards with my limitations and a steady rest.  My youngest wanted a squirrel diner today so, 40 yards off the back deck rail and a ear hole shot.  I'm excited to see what can be done with the 1977 piston in the older 880s and the piston plus abutment in the newer guns.  I'm thinking a $16 major power upgrade is about to happen.

PS:  I feel like I'm cheating by not mentioning my ole 1987 model, its still my nostalgic favorite and it gets it's fare share of squirrels and doves every year too.  She'll never get modified beyond a Ronno's trigger job and a LDC.  Nothing irreversible.  All though a 1977 piston upgrade is not an irreversible mod either.  Eating popcorn waiting on Ron's testing.

Just ordered a couple of pump heads, valve seals, and a body/barrel assembly.    I'm  gonna install the valve and piston in a new 880 and put a 922 barrel on the valvebody kit after porting the valvebody and drilling out the port for 22 cal.  I'll transplant that into a new 1977 and see what she does as a hotrod 22.   If all goes well I'll do my reat spring mod to it for over pumping and trigger pull.   I think I can get over 20 fpe in 22 cal.   I'm gonna test it with JSB Exact 18 grn and JSB Monster 25 grn.

The 1977 piston rod id dimensionally different from that of the 880.
Sure, the pivot hole is in a different location to account for the longer stroke,
but the head/spring assembly is longer than the 880 counterpart.
I do not know if the spring has sufficient give to compensate...
You may be able to account for that when you relocate the pivot pin hole...

I'm thinking I will re-drill the piston rod link for the same pivot location as the 880 and hack off the excess.  Probably easier than trying to make the piston work in an 880 rod, and can be done with hand tools by anyone at home.  As far as piston tilt I see what you are saying about the 1977 having a longer tilt radius, I think it is located there because of the longer piston height of the 1977 piston.  I believe there is sufficient tilt that it'll work.  Whattcha think?

Can't hurt to give it a try.........
