Title: Hatsan Carnivore .30cal
Post by: Ronno6 on October 15, 2022, 08:43:53 PM
Stumbled on to a deal on a Carnivore .30 that was too good to pass up.....
So, it is on the way along with a Torpedo 100X in .25cal.
Nice looking rifles.
We'll see how they shoot.

The .30 cal Hatsan got good press when introduced, a freak that actually works! Then, now, or before, they are the only offering of their ilk.

I went with a .25 cal H135, due to ammo availability, selection and price, and MV. But it would be a blast to take a .30 cal for a spin. So I'll be following this.

I've got the synthetic stock version Mod130. Same as a Mod135 30 cal Carnivore but without the lovely Turkish Walnut stock. It's an air-spring piston break barrel cannon that lobs bricks of lead. The WHACK mine makes when the pellet hits the target has me grinning ear-to-ear every time I shoot it. Pellet cost is high so not a very practical target rifle. IMO good for shorter range (20yard?) hunting/pesting. Did I mention it shoots HUGE 44-50 grain pellets at over 30fpe?

My ONLY concern regarding the Mod130 is the possibility the Vortex air spring will leak/fail. They are rebuildable with the right size/hardness o-rings, but I'd be more likely to convert it to use that giant Vortek coil spring (840142-44) I have waiting for my next air-spring leak.

I've also got a few Torpedo versions picked up as refurbs or from inventory closeout/clearance. Overall I like them, but they are large heavy rifles. The cocking-loading-shooting procedure is a bit tedious and it took me awhile to develop a good shooting rhythm. I'd rate them them as entertaining bench shooters. Would not want to go woods walking with a Torpedo 155. Might take a Torpedo 100x or 105x out hunting, but only for shorter treks.

The Torpedo 100 series use the Mod95/Edge small piston seal (27mm) and should shoot in that series fpe range.
The Torpedo 150 series use the Mod135 large piston seal (30mm) and should shoot in that series fpe range.

Torpedo breech seals are an odd duck so if/when Hatsan ever gets them back in stock I suggest you buy a set if you plan to keep the Torpedo.

I received the 2 Hatsans today.
Both are beautiful rifles.
The Carnivore is a CANNON ! and a moose to boot.
I will have to eat my Wheaties before shooting (cocking) it much..

The second rifle was SUPPOSED to be a Torpedo 100X in .25 cal.
NOT what I received...........
What I received is a .177cal Torpedo 155X.  A considerably higher priced gun.
No explanation as yet, and the dealer is closed til tomorrow.
I am not sure how much lf a fuss to kick up about this one.....
I would have really liked the .25, but the more valuable weapon makes up for it...and then some I suppose.

I squeezed off 1 shot from the Torpedo this morn.
Specs say 1250fps but don't spec pellets used for that MV.
Definitely supersonic with 7.87gr Daisy Precision Max pellets.........
Gotta try some heavier ones to tame this beast...

The Torpedo 155X still flung a 9.57gr pellet supersonic..........
I had to go to my Crosman Premiers at 10.5gr to stop the "crack"
I am impressed, but it does require some cocking effort, and a cycle that requires a bunch of steps......

My 135 Vortex .177 will send 10.5 gr. CPD at 998 FPS yes just slow enough to keep it quiet, found 13.5 JSB or Air Arms to be a good pellet match.
