Title: ShoeBox fan upgrade
Post by: rangerjoel on October 30, 2011, 07:32:48 PM
My ShoeBox compressor remained in original factory condition for over 2 days!
That’s a record in my house. ;D
After filling a 48 cubic inch tank three times, I decided to upgrade the compressor with a cooling fan. A trip to an electronics store an hour away yielded a cooling fan with filter.
I used a 3.5” circular saw on my mill to cut the opening, protecting all of the internals with a cloth.

I then drilled the mounting holes and secured the fan with Nylock nuts.

Finally, I wired it into the ShoeBox so that the fan is on any time the unit is in operation.

I filled my tank form 2000 to 3000 psi with the high pressure cylinder becoming only slightly warm to the touch. Hopefully this will help preserve the o rings. :D

I installed one 6 months ago and wow did it help. One thing I did was to take some aluminum tape and cover the air intake holes in the cover that are right beside the fan. After doing that I drilled a bunch of holes on the other end of the cover to get the air to flow all the way through the unit and to get some to go into the motor to help cool it. Wish I had a mill to drill the holes as using a hole saw and hand drill was are real pain.

I did the household fan thing for the first two fills, but it takes up precious work space in my shop. The next upgrade will be to figure out how hinge the cover. The four screws seem like over kill for something that needs to be greased and checked frequently.

Ha, Ha.  I know the feeling.  So how many days would it have lasted in a nooorrrrrrmmmaaalll person's house?  ???

Slick looking job. Getting the heat out of something like that can make such a difference, even if it's only psychological.  In this case I bet it's real. ;D  Well done!

Great job Joel and clean work. After running mine for about a total of 12 hours I noticed the heat problems also. Even had to change o'rings once. But like you nothing in my shop grows grass under it...:) I found two really nice portable small fans and have them set up to cool the shoebox when it runs as well.

You can now actually touch anything in the box without getting ur fingers burned now...:)

Thanks for sharing with us

I agree, very nice job.  Well done.

I use a small portable fan and like the others I feel it makes a difference.  Just the other day I topped off my 4500 psi 88cf carbon fiber tank and everything was nice and cool to the touch throughout the entire fill.  :)
