Being given a part to reproduce? I decided it would be best to reproduce it by casting a mold and then produce an EXACT match.
Maybe not the best area to post this in but given the situation? I do believe We need to talk about Casting also.
What do I mean by Casting?
We take a part, make a mold of that part, mix up some plastic and pour it into the mold.
Now I've been casting barrel bands for the AT-44 and BT-65 Hatsans for a few years now.
Any color you want. Actually takes less time then printing them once you have a mold.
So being this is Matt's area? What do you think of a sub area about Casting and pouring parts?
-
If the owners want to create a sub section thats fine.

I use investment cast aluminum parts made from the lost PLA process. The part starts as a 3D print.
-
Yes. But I'm talking about reproducing a part by making a rubber mold then mixing the plastic pour at this point.
Idea is to reproduce a part as exactly as We could.
My example is parts from a 1950's shelf. Easier to Cast a mold then pour it the do a 3D model.

I understand. That could be a viable way to make a mold. What kind of plastic are you pouring?
Investment casting is for metal parts.

Sounds like molds for lost wax casting used to make jewelry. I also tinker with lapidary hand make silver rings and pendants for the wife and myself lol.

It’s the same

It’s is the same process but uses PLA instead of wax. A pattern used to form a one shot mold for casting metal.
Different than the OP making a semi permanent mold for casting plastic resin, I’m assuming.

Yes. I cast a reusable rubber kind of mold to then mix a plastic compound to reproduce parts.
Current project is to reproduce a part for a 1950's era horseshoe for a Gun rack.
There's a lot of steps one needs to go through to produce the molds, then get a great cast.
But it's a viable way to do things. I've got molds for barrel bands for the Hatsan AT-44 and the BT-65
