Title: What is the best sound meter app for an iphone?
Post by: Earl on September 23, 2022, 03:10:35 PM
What is the difference in Peak and Max decibels?
Which one should I use for airguns?

What phone?
The thing about apps for a phone is your not getting a calibrated mic so the readings are mostly suspect.

Should I use Lmax or LCpeak for airgun shots?

I'm not a big Fan of Apps to do a definitive sound reading.
To many variables involved.
Now I did go to a school for running Sound Boards for Bands years ago.
Even some of the best stuff We used back then was subject to SO MANY things that could be wonky.
But I have beat Court Cases based on wrongfully obtained Sound levels.
Mostly for tickets for loud exhaust on motorcycles. Not real popular with the local LEO's for that!

CDC did some work on this and came up with an iPhone app.
https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/noise/app.html (https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/noise/app.html)
There is a low cost mic you can add
https://www.amazon.com/Dayton-Audio-iMM-6-Calibrated-Measurement/dp/B00ADR2B84 (https://www.amazon.com/Dayton-Audio-iMM-6-Calibrated-Measurement/dp/B00ADR2B84)

I don't have an iPhone so I have not tried the app. The mic works reasonably well.

I measured the peak decibels of my stock Gauntlet .177 on my iphone 7 near the shooter's ear.
NIOSH app averaged = 111.1 decibels
Decibel X app averaged = 99.3 decibels
These measurements were taken at the same location within 10 minutes of each other.
I don't understand the big difference.

Interesting, are you using the same settings on both (MAX, fast, A or C weighted, etc)?

Using the PEAK in Decibel X.
Using the LCpeak in NIOSH SLM.

I tend to use MAX. I think the instantaneous PEAK is too short of a duration and too variable. Everything I've read points to the ear needing time to respond, basically collect some energy.

OK, I will try MAX in both apps and post the results.

NIOSH max      NIOSH peak      Decibel X max      Decibel X peak
Stock baffels      Stock baffels      Stock baffels      Stock baffels
91.7    avg      108.2 avg                 86.9 avg              96.2 avg

Yes, the max seems more reasonable.

Thats a moot queation!
They might give great response but in reality the microphone is rated in the 200-3000kHz band double if best.
The next problem is response time, what if your impulse is 1 milli second (I dont know what 1/1000 second is in imperial) and your phones electronics responce time is 2ms. so the sound burst is over before the phone even begins to register.
Thats going to give a nice flat curve!

A true sound monitor rated to 165+Db goes for more than $3000. And thats no Fluke!
