I grew up hunting squirrels in my neighborhood with a Daisy 880, I now live where I can use a shotgun or rimfire to hunt small game and for years I did, but a while back I picked up a Winchester 1977 because it reminded me of the 880 I had as a kid. I started using it to hunt squirrels around the house. I had so many good memories come rushing back toting that gun into the woods. I remember as a kid trying to eek out more power from the old 880, now I want to do all the things I didn't know how to as a boy. Well I've been having a good time at it so far. So growing up my vintage of the 880 was the 80s model. Metal receiver and metal pump lever. I know that dates me to some of the younger bucks but it was the get it done gun back then. I wish I knew then what I know now. Anyways, I just picked one up on ebay for $25. I have one that I hunt with now that is 100% factory that I would never modify, it is my time capsule, rusty barrel shroud and all. I pick it up and I am 12 again. The one I just bought I want to mod with all the the things I think would be upgrades that as a kid I would have loved to do. So, I'm gonna blast, polish, and blue the barrel and pump handle, reseal with viton seals, put a LDC on it, a good scope, and Ron's upgraded rebuild kit and trigger mod. I know it had bbs run through it cause it came full of bbs, so if it won't hold a tight group I'll re-barrel it as well. I'm currently doing a build on a new 880 with power mods at the same time that I will document on the forum but this one will be more of a resto update rather than an intrusive power mod. If the barrel and pump handle bluing job turn out nice I may do it to my favorite 880. I will be designing a trigger guard model soon since those seem to be in short supply. I will do that while working on this project and when I get the model dialed in and proven I'll post it to thingiverse also. I will also be documenting a 922/1977 Frankenstein soon. Looking to get well in the 20+ fpe with a 22cal 1977. I really enjoy this forum and hope it continues for a long time.

So this gun is looking promising. It is tight for its age and the forearm hooks are still intact. I blasted the shroud after the failed piston brazzing attempt on the new 880. I think it is gonna be a shooter when done. I am going to try and polish the barrel now that its blasted then blue it rather than paint. If it works as expected I'll do it to my 87 model which is my favorite. I purchased the tools for this job from Amazon for pretty cheap, especially since they can be used for other jobs.

My first attempt at bluing turned out nice. Polishing wasn't bad with the 4" grinder and polish wheel. The compounds worked really good. A dremel with polish wheel helps to get into the tight spots. I did 5 coats of Birchwood Casey bluing paste. Then treated with Birchwood Casey Barricade oil.

What media do you blast with?

It's a black media I get at harbor freight. Don't remember what its called. I used to have a blast cabnet and a large tank blaster but keeping the air dry and the nozzles clear was a pain. I used the cheap hand held canister gun linked above, it works just fine.

So when I got this gun it was missing the safety button. Evidently there are different safety buttons depending on year. The new one didn't work after an hour of trying I dug through the scrap pile and found one from an older rifle and it fit. The only ones I can find are the new style. Does anyone know a source for the older safety buttons?

They are as hard to come by as plastic trigger guards.........

I wonder if the button and trigger guard could be reproduced in a mold like:

using

I might give it a shot when I get time.
or maybe even a pewter version ;)

I had a Daisy 880 in the 1980s. I asked for it for Christmas in 1983 I believe. My mom picked us up late at night from the family we stayed with while she worked nights and I seen the boxed gun sticking out from underneath a blanket in the back of her pinto. I chose to keep quiet as I knew it meant a lot to my mom to surprise me for Christmas.
The thing that made me want it was an outdoor life ad that showed it penetrating 10 gauge steel at 10 yards and I put it to the test and it did! Shot tons of birds, some squirrels, a large snake, a pigeon from the top of the grain elevators, and a possum with it. That gun was incredible. I wore it out and honestly I have no idea what happened to it. Perhaps I threw it away at some point. That gun was pumped 10 times so fast sometimes it was like a screen door lol. It was banged up pretty hard. Years later I saw an 880 that belonged to my future (now past) in laws as I was so disappointed. It was plastic everywhere. I said I’d never own another plastic Lego gun again. Today I’m more into adult air rifles with wood so I doubt I’ll ever feel like spending money on an old daisy but this post brought back memories. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Absolutely!
That's awesome!
Yeah I love tinkering with these guns and love them for the memories. I will be hunting with one till I'm gone. Going on 40 years with one and still will take an 880 or a variant there of in the woods every year. This one is going to my childhood buddy who I hunted with as a kid, he is super excited about getting it because it brought back all those days of us growing up hunting squirrels with our 880s. I'm way older now lol, and could afford a good PCP but I will dance with the lady that I brought. I do prefer the 1980s vintage which is what I had as a kid and I have a good one now though the shroud shows its age. I still take squirrels with the old 880 every year. I tinker with the Winchester 1977s and push them hard. So if I go into the "big woods" for squirrels I take one of my modified 1977.

I finished the 880, shoots H&N Baracuda Match right at 600fps. Turned out pretty nice. Looks like my ole hunting buddy and I will be heading out for some squirrels with the ole 880s again.
