Been bouncing this around a lot lately. What is the 30 cal ideal power level ?
Regulated - how many shots
Un-regulated how many shots?
I know some may ask about tank size and if so, then what kind of efficiency?
-
IMO .30 can be versatile, just look at what the Edgun Leshey can do in .30 Mine wants in .30 is right over 100 FPE 110 ish and 5 accurate hunting shots.
If I want regulated I can tether.
-
Ideal for what job? I have a light 5lb 2200psi fill .30 that gets 5 shots at 55fpe I love for woods walking for squirrel or fox/raccoon or a 8lb bottle gun (500cc 250bar) gets 36 shots at 80fpe unregulated that's good on the bench or hunting or I can tune it up to 100fpe with slugs and still get 3 mags (27 shots). I think the use dictates best power.
-
For me the "Ideal" power level for any gun would be where you are pushing your projectile at it's optimum velocity. If pellets then tuned where it is shooting 850-875fps.
So if you would be shooting the 44g - 75fpe
If shooting the 50g - 105fpe
-
I guess I am just trying to figure out if it's going to be worth it to tear into the 30cal challenger SL I have and possibly throw a reg on it.
80fpe seems like the lowest you would want and anything over 100fpe would be bonus. I would guess that loading tray length would dictate the projectile length so there would be the max weight.
If I can get a spare valve from AEA it would be great.
I think the trick is going to be able to get the gun to do 90fpe at 2k psi.
If I can make it happen and then put a reg in we are going to see some awesome numbers from a 4500psi fill.

Had been running my .30 at @ 95ish FPE where it shot great with JSB 44's
Slugs due to the tune / set up of the balanced valve was weak & not satisfactory :-[
Redid the valve and now shooting 44's over 100 fpe ( too fast ) but now shoots heavier slugs or JSB 50's upper 900's for @ 105 fpe maxing out @ 113 fpe with a 60 grain slug.
-
At max power above .. 145 bar, at the 95 fpe level closer to 125 bar
-
Yup, your recent post is the reason for asking about this.

Yea we don't read many numbers for .30's .... Seems the FX crew talks about 80+ fpe using 44's and being happy enough. Just dang few who have really leaned on the caliber have said much ?
-
I run my .30 at 90 FPE around the house on 145 bar. I have bumped it up to 115 FPE before on 155 bar going on some hunting trips. All using the JSB 44.75gr or the 50.15gr. I just ordered a 55gr NOE slug mold and have plans to turn it on up for giggles if needed. My limit is 170 bar. At 90 FPE using the 44.75gr and a 580cc bottle I get somewhere around 60 shots at least. I have never really done a full count but two 26 count mags for sure before getting close to reg setpoint and at least another 10 shots beyond that being still within my 2% ES goal.

So that looks like the norm, 90 fpe at 2k/2.2k psi.
Working with the challenger with 24" barrel, the HS adjuster, and maybe a minor mode to the valve, we just might get 40 shots with a 4500psi fill.
Ooh boy, that makes it exciting.

950 to 960 seems to do well for the 44.75gr and haven't seen any change in accuracy or stability but does add a little more recoil to the mix. I think 920 to 940 is probably ideal depending on range and holdover desires.

I need a chronograph, but whatever this AEA HP Max is running is great with predator polymags.
I've never seen this kind of energy dump, even in rimfire cartridges. Pretty cool. :-)
-
I'm very new to the .30 cal game, but my Challenger gives me one full mag in the 90+ ft lb range, with power left over for a couple of additional shots in a pench. That's about all I need for a good day hunt in the field. I don't do a lot of target shooting but if I did, more shots would be great.
-
The .30 cal doesn't mess around. I was surprised when I setup and shot some old tangerines at 70 yards tuned at 90 FPE using my pure lead 46gr cast pellets. The tangerines literally exploded with no pulp remaining and outer skin just in bits. I wasn't expecting that.

My .30 cal Bobcat (modded XS-60) gets 3 mags (21 shots) at 100 FPE with 44.7 or 50.2 gr. JSBs, and is regulated at 2200 psi.... 25" long TJ's 26" twist barrel and a 22CI x 3K bottle....
Bob
-
Bob, my first PCP was an XS-60. That's fantastic that you could take that rifle to .30 cal and get that kind of power and shot count. You are the Master!!
-
I run my impact at 155 bar and 100 ft. lbs.. It seems it is happy that way.... The Monster Design power wheel lets me tune down if I need to..
Just a side note.. am 67 and the last day of August, I'll be 68 !!!
I had brain ultrasound to reduce my tremors..
Well the surgery went great except for one screw went in to far (broke the skin) .. 4 holding the frame on.. Had to shave my head.. First time since I was a baby !!!
The effects are immediate and they test you thru out the process.. You know the spirals, straight line and sighing your name 3 or 4 times during the test .
They adjust the ultrasound while testing your tremor.. So far 90-95 reduction in tremor on my dominate side..
They can only do one side at a time the after 6 months, they can do the other side..
Only side affect is swelling of my left side of my face around my eye.. Looks like I am recovering from a black eye...
Can last as long as ten years..
By the way I can now load a .177 mag now with my right hand !!!! That is one of the reasons I have .30 and a .457 !!
-
Just put in the 20 gram hammer, few buffer adjustments and we are back at @ 91 fpe with 44.75's @ 960 fps.
It's so accurate there think I'm going to keep it there. It's so quiet & efficient too ... air savings is good !!
-
Ideal power level imo is based on what speeds/energy shoots most accurately from your particular platform/ and what the intended purpose of the platform is.
For me:
Maverick compact 44.8gr pellets at 850fps ~40 shots per fill
Marauder 62gr slugs at 1000fps -28 shots per fill
-
I've tried to edit my comment to add this, but could not..
The AEA HP SS Max, while delivering crazy energy, has terrible shot counts - I fill it to the top of the green (around 250 bar) and it's down to the light green after one 9 shot magazine.
That's atrocious, but, each round hits like a truck, so, I'm ok with it, in this gun, because that's what I want it to do.
If my .30 Edgun L2 didn't get 32+ excellent shots, I'd be really upset.
-
In my case I found that a 150gr bullet at 1035 FPS producing about 350FPE gives me sub-moa groups of two at 100yards. If I want to run regulated I just Tether.
-
350fpe is amazing.wow.
Just got done with a shooting session over the chrony with the aea challenger sl.
No matter what, I can't get over 15 shots at 90fpe. That's with a 5.5 es.
Worst part is at 2600 psi, it drops hard.
Even tried an 80fpe tune and it had a worse es.
I know it has to be that valve. That silly 3 hole plus poppet return spring cap. It reminds me of when the gen 1 22 cal marauder had the sleeves valve and when it was removed, made a heck of a difference. It's a good concept for flow but terrible for flow at high pressure.
I tried bintac for a replacement valve with no success so, I just may have to risk milling out the face of the valve. I was thinking of milling straight down the center hitting all 4 entrances while still leaving some meat on the threads for the poppet return spring.
Anywho,
Even though this was a good gun for cheap, it's either going to be a paper weight or winner we I get done with it.
Thanks for all the responses.
-
Hoping for a winner for you Tim.
-
Not just me, all of us🙂👍
-
Even a 30 cal challenger at 85 fpe for 2 mags at stable velocity would be great.
