Started out a VERY slow leak out muzzle. I discovered it after the plastic cap popped off the barrel end. I put it back on and several seconds later it popped off again. So, I dry fired it a couple of times to try to maybe seat an o-ring. Instead there was a muffled pop and then swish as all the air was dumped.
So, before I attempt to tear into it I thought I would ask you fine folks what I’m likely to find, and what I need to order upfront to hopefully get it back going again.
Also, I seem to remember something about a device I’ll need to keep from cutting o-rings. Yes?
Any help and suggestions will be appreciated greatly!! I’ve never been inside this gun.

It sounds like it could be the poppit. If you order this from Crosman. You must call them.
Customer service: 1 (800) 724-7486
If you order from pyramid air.

Also replace the orings.

Yup ... Fractured poppet head. Common issue especially with Gen 2 Rods and .25's of both gens.

Mine leaked from fill valve. Crossman sent me new fill valve under warranty and fixed problem
Thanks

Get a bag of 118 orings from amazon
And get the part number and call crosman for the poppet. I buy a couple poppets cause they're cheap.
This will be by far the cheapest way to fix it. Take your time reassembling it and be careful not to knick an o ring. Use some silicone lubricant and it goes really smooth. Good luck

And the Calvary to the rescue! “Sound of trumpet “ :-)
Thanks a million Hunter, Scott, Harold, and Mike!! The poppet came to mind but figured I’d ask the pros here and hopefully get off on the right foot.
I’ll check back in later and share how it went-or not, heaven forbid.
Thanks again and especially the quick links Hunter!!

Once you pull it apart to replace the poppet, you'll want to replace the five HPA O-rings as mentioned already. I am chiming in to say use some silicon grease on the new O-rings and help them with a blunt tool like the end of a hex wrench to get past the gauge port opening, so you don't damage/nick the O-rings. You don't need a special tool.
I like lubing the whole tube inside for easy assembly using a wooden dowel and paper towel, but this requires cleaning up the hammer slide area afterwards because you want that area very clean and dry. A 3/4" O.D. long wood dowel will make life easier removing and reinstalling the parts. Make sure you have the valve and gauge ports aligned in the right positions when reinserting them to make the task easier.

I am wondering about the plastic cap?
I assume the rifle is a Gen II.
Does the Gen II have a plastic muzzle cap?
-
That was my thought, Frank... What cap is popping off?
-
The fill cap cover is plastic.
I do not think a bad poppet would affect that.
The problem has to be in the fill port check valve.

'zactly. None of my guns have a cap over the barrel. Never even seen a gun with a cap over the barrel.

Both of my M-Rods shipped with a protective cap on the muzzle. I just assumed that it was only for shipping, so I tossed it back into the box.

Hmm
THAT yellow plastic shipping cap.
Then it might be the poppet or valve poppet o-ring.
-
If air is blowing out the barrel the 99% sure it is the poppet. I also a 3/4 dowel and drilled a hole in the end so nothing else can be damaged when pushing out the valve.

A finger with a lot of silicone grease works very well.
That is Motörhead’s routine.
Scott H in San Luis Obispo made these on his CNC printer.
They work too:

Yes, that is the cap I’m talking about. I also put a florescent streamer on the cap. It keeps insects out and is a reminder that the gun isn’t cocked, etc. The streamer reminds me to not shoot with it on. 😁 On my Bulldog I use a balloon and don’t worry if I shoot with it on (started doing this back in muzzle loader days)

Thanks Keith, any tips are welcome!
Poppet is back ordered so I’ve got some time to plan. Wife just got home after breaking her hip, so I’m pretty busy looking after her now anyway.
Thanks guys for the feedback!!

James,
Order more than one poppet. (If you have a spare, you will never need it.)
Get the o-ring for the valve too.
A bunch of 118s.

Bless her heart that sounds like a very bad day. I am wishing her a speedy recovery.
You may already have some silicon grease lying around and even some Home Depot plumbers' grease will work but if you have some new priorities and time, I like using this Trident silicon grease. I use it on all air gun applications including for ammo lube. It's good silicon grease.

Frank, I like your logic on spares! :-) yep, got a couple on order. Seems like I always need something I don’t have. In summer of 2011 we had a wildfire burn us out. Seems like I’m always looking for something that I used to have since. Getting my wife home again after a month in hospital and full time nursing home, sure reconfirmed what is important though. “Thank you Keith!!” for the kind words.
