Title: Webley Air Service MkII
Post by: RayT1946 on July 20, 2022, 11:52:28 PM
Does anyone on this site have experience actually shooting one of these unique old rifles? I have seen films of them on Utube, but thats about it. I am kind of interested in one in .22 or .25 caliber. I saw several at the Grove City show, but none were for sale(display only)................

I had one for many years. What questions do you have?

They really look like a cool old rifle to me and I was wondering; what kind of velocity do you get, say in .22 cal?  I saw 4 of them at the show in Grove City, but all of them were display only. Really nice when you have the money in your pocket and can't buy the stuff on the table. I bought a Webley MK.III from you several years back and now I can barely cock it; it couldn't be old age..........................................

Hi Ray! I know what you mean, the Mk 3 is more of a struggle for me too, than it used to be... :(

My Service had both the original .22 barrel, and a .177 made by John Knibbs's shop (I think) in the 1990's. As I recall it got around 500 FPS in .22, 550 to 600 in .177 depending on pellet, etc. Mine had been rebuilt so I don't really know how its innards related to an original one though.

The Mk 2 is definitely easier to cock than a Mk 3 due to the long barrel, though the stroke does get a little stiffer near the end. It has a nice light trigger and I always loved the built-in aperture sight.

I'd be interesting in buying another one if you run into some secret stash of 'em, LOL. The only one I saw at Grove City was the one in Steve Kitchens's display, which is the one I used to have.

It's good to see some chat in this "gate" that's not about TX's, ha.

Mike; thanks so much for the info! Kind of figured around 500 in .22, but wasn't sure. This was my first year for the show at Grove City, a really nice show. Going to try and make more of them next year. Hope to see you in person..........................

My Webley Service MKII rifle in .177 does 650 feet/sec. It is fun to shoot and accurate enough to hit starlings at 20 yards.
