Title: ProChrono vs Caldwell chronograph?
Post by: Gunny100 on July 12, 2022, 07:35:39 PM
Good morning. I want to buy a chronograph and I am hesitating between these two brands.

Can you advise me about them? Which of the two brands is better? I have heard that both work well but ProChrono is a little better quality. I like the prochrono dlx.

I intend to take care of it and have it for many years, so I prefer to buy the better of the two brands.

It has to be that type of chronograph since I also want it for arrows and other things.

Thank you very much!

I have no experience with the Caldwell but I do like my ProChono DLX digital with the bluetooth and light kit very much.

I've had the Caldwell with IR Light kit 5 or 6 years now and have been happy with it. There's probably not a wrong choice you could make.

Yep, I know owners of both who are equally happy.
The PC is the only chrono that I've owned or used. I may just be satisfied because it's what I know.

I have the Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph kit with the tripod, light kit, power kit and communications wire.  If I were making a purchase today it would be the ProChrono DLX with Bluetooth connectivity to your phone.  My Caldwell works good enough but can be a bit finicky on any given day, or time of day and is dated technology.  Also getting the software to work on my phone took purchasing a special dongle to change the communications wire into a USB - C connection for my OnePlus cell phone without a headphone jack.  If money is no object then my purchase would be the FX Chronograph - hands down.

I do not have experience with the Caldwell.  I did read some Amazon reviews that did steer me away.

I went for the ProChrono DLX plus light kit and am pretty happy with it.  The Bluetooth integration is solid and I like being able to see the readouts on my phone instead of trying to read the non backlit LCD.

I have been very happy with my basic Caldwell. I had more errors with the ProChrono,  testing both under the exact same conditions.
  NOTE ;
The testing was done probably 10 years ago.

Hello, thanks for the answers. I think I will finally buy the ProChrono dlx soon.

A friend has a the FX chrony and he is very happy with it (although the last day he had some reading problems, but I think the problem was with the phone) but I want a chronograph also for arrows and other flying objects lol.

The light kit is probably the best upgrade. It really eliminates virtually all errors due to lighting conditions.

I have the prochrono with a light kit. It's the pre-bluetooth model. Works great never a days problem with it. I probably average a couple tins a week through it. I've had it from 2018 IIRC. Only thing wrong with it is I forget to turn it off and the 9v battery goes dead. That's really my fault though. I think the same chronograph if you could download the data would be great. I have to get to the buttons and write down the results. Not terrible but it'd be nicer to save it to a file

I've been using a ProChrono for a few years ever since I nailed my old F1 chronograph dead in the "eye" with a .20 Beeman Ram Jet pellet at 40 yards. The old F1 chrony.......
The RamJet pellet was exceptionally inaccurate from the R9 so I shouldn't have even tried to measure the 40 yard velocity.

Anywhoo, The F1 was replaced with a basic ProChrono and I used it for a few years with only the diffusers over the sensors, however a couple years ago I bought a light kit for indoor use. Initially I would set the chrony outside or place it on the roof of my sunroom outside an upstairs window..........

Ron, you can buy the add on BT kit. It works great. It links to my IPhone and 10.5 tablet without issue. I also have a BT dongle for the laptop. This makes organizing, printing and posting really simple. I also like the voice feature. It reads the FPS aloud so I don't have to avert my eyes from the target.
Besides... who don't like toys?   ;D

^^This...lol. I bought my ProChrono back in 2016. Can't shoot indoors, so I got the BT add-on instead of the light kit. Paired just fine with both my Samsung Galaxy Tab 4
and the Samsung Galaxy J7 SkyPro phone I got a little later and the app is a free download. When I get done shooting strings, I just email the files to myself and save them
to folders for the rifles on my desktop PC.
Only thing I wish is that they'd built the BT in sooner...lol.

I have both and I favor the proChrono for its bluetooth capability and software.
You can't go wrong either way.

Has anyone found a low cost carry bag alternative for the ProChrono?

Midway USA has it, but it's $20+.  I'm frugal, any options for cheaper that fit and protect the ProChrono?

Anyone own the debris shield kit?  It's a piece of glass that fits over the top of the ProChrono.

I don't worry about shooting mine. I always pace the chrono 12" or less in front of the muzzle. Chairgun and other software is good for determining downrange stats.
As for a carrying case... no need for me, I never travel with it. It sits in the corner of the mancave on it's tripod.

At the moment I'm only going to have money for the prochrono without light or tripod or bag.

Later I will buy the lights although there are people who use much cheaper LED lamps and it works the same. I have a hunting tripod that I hope will fit the thread.

Regarding the bag, I think that later on I will buy a rigid plastic briefcase. I always prefer hard cases over holsters for my guns or valuables as I am often in a hurry to places and occasionally bump the case when carrying it. So I'll find a suitable size rigid plastic case (there are cheap and hard ones) and put some layers of foam to make it fit inside.

I will also buy a thick sheet of methacrylate to protect the front when shooting.

yeah they can be finicky on lighting, i keep putting off the light kit on my caldwell, its alot of cheddar lol. .. i know i can set it up on my desk by the south window and shoot over it about a foot away out the window between about 9am and 12 and the lighting is good enough to give 100% solid readings when i need some data on a gun .. so its like that .. 9v only battery power was another nuisance, but i did buy a cheap recgargeable 9v battery set with 4 batteries on ebay so that works out good for several things around the house ..

I had the ProChrono DLX and it mostly worked okay.  It went on the fritz and I bought the LMBR Shooting chronograph instead.

I think the overall design is better and more reliable.

A larger plastic ammo box makes a great carry container for a crony.

Did you try to get any warranty support for the ProChrono DLX?

Thanks, I was looking around at Gator Cases but they all cost more than the actual Competition Electronics carry bag.  I'll look around!

Out of warranty, so no.

Besides, I wanted to try something different.  My new one runs completely on batteries, unlike the setup required to get that ProChrono working and a plug needed for the light adapter.  I find myself using the LMBR more often because it's so portable and just needs to be switched on.

It’s mostly about extra cost “add on” stuff.  Have to say, the lighting kits were a bit of a PIA to set up.
Considering the cost of add on’s,,,depends on what level you want.  Blue tooth to your phone/computer?  Night lighting? Direct to a mini-printer?

I can still run a pencil...so all I really needed was numbers and the ability to get those numbers even in the dark (like is adjusting/shooting in the shop or at night).

Considering cost...rather than lighting kit, bought one of the clamp on the muzzle China-cheapo mini units for $33-$35 on Amazon (cheaper can be had).

Tested, here was a max 1.1% difference in velocity readings.  Oddly the faster one was not always the same one.  Likely if I tested two of the same brand/model chronograph, would find about the same difference.

Time passes….ended up using the  cheap clamp to the barrel mini exclusively.

Do you find that changes your POI?
Title: Re: ProChrono vs Caldwell chronograph?
Post by: Ribbonstone on July 14, 2022, 01:02:15 PM
On some guns..yes, it  will shift POI an a little, but it’s a consistent shift.  On others, they don’t care.

I do even worse...will clamp the little unit sideways to get it out of the scope’s field of view and both plink and save readings (it will hold up to 40 shots in memory).

Really like the little cheap units, although I give up firearms use/blue tooth.

1. Haven’t found a way to accidentally shoot one.
2. Doesn’t matter what direction you shoot, so no set up/alignment/restricted shooting direction.
3. Works day or night/inside or outside.
4. recharges from a USB port.

About 2 years of use so far...no signs the battery is going to give up (yet), no problems. The ProChorny shown in the picture pretty much collects dust.

I have a ProChrono and a Caldwell Ballistic Precision Kit. I bought the Caldwell in 2020? maybe?? it's been a while anyway. I just unboxed it and tried it today. It does not have Bluetooth, but it works well with both my LG 10" tablet and my Motorola Z4 phone.
I like that on the ProChrono I can cycle through stats on it's screen whereas on my Caldwell all you can see is the last shot unless you have the App opened up. Anyway they both have + and - aspects. I do think a newer model with Bluetooth would be nicer but really unnecessary for me since I have these two. I also have a small Chinese chrono that works pretty well too.

Between a Caldwell and ProChrono I think it's a toss up.

The ProChrono I have has it's own printer, which is nice too. Opps, Nope it is my Shooting Chrony that has the printer. I had for got about the Shooting Chrony. It works well too.
I may have too much stuff, :-[ LOL.
