Title: Im looking at buying a DIANA LP8
Post by: robert w on October 24, 2011, 09:53:06 PM
Im wanting to know a little about 1 as they seem kinda pricet, but if its anything like my hw-55 it will last a lifetime. iIs there any problems with them, or are they a fine pistol for the price?  Are they hard to cock? And all the other quirks we need to know before buying? Or should i look for something less pricey? I shoot pbs a lot and 22 shell get high, so i was leanig for a good pistol to plink , target shoot, and pest control ;D

I have the Browning 800 mag pistol.  Very similar.  Over 700 FPS with Hobbies.  Very accurate. Only 149 and change at PA.

I was looking at a brownong 800 but was looking at what was out there . You gave me some thought . Is the trigger good in the browning?

I have no problems with the browning trigger but every one has different tastes.  I have to use scope because of old eyes but inside a dime at 10 meters usually.

I don't know a lot about the LP8, having never owned or shot one.

HOWEVER, I do own the Diana P5 Magnum, which is the model that the LP8 replaced. I know that both pistols have the same powerplant. If the LP8 shoots anything like the P5, you are going to LOVE it.

The P5 is not hard to cock, but the cocking extender makes it so easy, it's almost effortless. You can get the cocking extender for $14.08 + shipping at Umarex's website. The extender fits the LP8, as well as the P5 and the Browning 800 Mag. It's worth it.

There have been a lot of good reviews on the LP8. Read these:

...Also, here is my initial data from testing the P5, which will probably prove useful to the study of your results with the LP8:

Hope this helps!

I just recently picked up a P-5 Magnum and I am very impressed with it.  It's very nicely built, has good power and excellent accuracy.  The LP8 has the same power plant so all things being equal one would think that it should shoot just as nice as the P-5 that it replaced.  I've never shot an LP8 though so I can't attest personally attest to that.

I like my p5 pistol and shot it the other day after a slight tune and shooting at a metal can 15 yrds. away and it shot clean thru every time. mine is a little stout to cock at 28 lbs. compared to specs. on lp8 at 19 lbs. Anyway the little mag. pistols are fun to shoot,Good luck on which one you choose.

If you look around (Gun broker, here, other forums) you may a find a deal on the LP8s like I did.
I currently have and share with my friends;
2-LP8's
2-P5's
2-Browning 800's in .22
2-Browning 800's in .177
1-Beeman P1 in .177
1-IZH 46M
1-Tempest in .177
1-Hurricane in .177
Several CO2s, S&W 586, B92, DE, steel storm.
I just received my 4-800s back from Umarex for recall work.  Haven't tried them all out yet but my primary had the scope put back on and was right back on target.
IMO-
When it comes to the RWS pistols (P5 vs LP8) the LP8 win hands down. You can red dot/scope it, a whole lot better safety location and fits my hand much better.
LP8 vs the 800 in .177- Take the LP8.
For the punch of a .22 pellet, the 800 is my go to pistol for tree rat killing out to 30 yards but off a sturdy rest.

What did you do to it when you "tuned" it? Did the fps suffer, or improve?

Hello, Robert W.

I got a 'NEW RWS/Diana LP 8 .177 MAGNUM Pistol  a little over 2-years ago...but I haven't shot it since last July, '11, due to 'health reasons' At that time, I was pretty pleased with it (it's my first Break Barrel Spring'er Pistol).

Well....it has the same Barrel (from the front of the Muzzle Brake - to the loading port, , and fiber optic sights, RED & GREEN , same as the RWS 5G P5....the rest of the pistol is NEW design (although I'd guess the 'internals' are the same).....the front sight is about an 1/8th- inch higher than the 5G P5....the safety has been moved from the 5G's position in the Trigger Guard, and moved 'just behind the Trigger Guard, and the 'top-forward' position above the forward part of the grips....(in the form of a lever that protrudes from both sides of the pistol (for ambidextrious shooters)....it's 'fine' on the 'LEFT side' but on the RIGHT side, there is a 'tiny ledge' (to prevent 'over travel' of the safety....and this stands proud of the lower receiver about a 1/32nd of an Inch and 'cuts into the 'long finger of your right hand...(I plan to 'file it off...'the ledge'...not the finger) !

The two halves of the frame (from the ENTIRE trigger guard - on thru the ENTIRE Grip area) has an 'open seam' (about a 'sixteenth-of-an-inch) that 'will not meet' (even with the 'grip-bolts' fully tightened), and makes an 'unpleasant, 'pinch-point' along it's entire length (maybe I'll wrap the entire pistol grip with Electrician's Tape, someday)...after about 50-shots, recoil shock/vibration makes the allen screws in the Muzzle Brake 'loose' and need a 'dab' of 'Blue Loctite' and retightning...

I 'LOVE' the NEW '11-mm Scope Rail' on the LP-8...it's SIX INCHES LONG....(from the front end of the Receiver - to the base of the REAR SGHT)....a completely different Trigger than the '5G P5' (don't know much about triggers)....so far it seems OK to me.....

That Summer of '09,  I took it outdoors and set-up my F-1 Chrony, and 'fired off' 10-rounds....the HIGHEST velocity was 606.8 FPS....the LOWEST was 587.7 FPS (about a 19.1 FPS spread...'if you can trust the Chrony)...using 'RWS Hobby .177 7-grain Wadcutter pellets'......the LP 8 weighs and handles pretty much like the 5G P5........other than the complaints listed above, I'm 'pretty well pleased with the pistol' (paid $ 289.25 for it).....(I put a BSA 2 X 20 Pistol Scope on it, with a 'UTG Accushot' 1-Piece Mount w/1" Rings - 3/8ths " Dovetail, around $12. My '67 year old eyes need the scope !

Then, I 'gave the 5G P5 pistol I had,  to my younger brother (a 'powder-burner, pistol 'kind of guy), and he was
happy !
I had only put around 100 rounds thru the LP-8,  when I had a 'Circulation Event' (blockage in the Right Leg Artery...had to have Surgery (5-incisions, from Groin-to-Calf), with 2 each, Stents, and a vein 'harvested from my Groin', used as a 'Bypass'......2-years later, I'm in 'worse' shape then before the surgery....plus, I had to move out of my last apartment into a 'senior High Rise' (no guns or shooting allowed, (and I don't drive), so I haven't been able to do 'any shooting' for quite a while.

I've only had a few CO 2 pistols in the past, and I'm not to fond of them (due to 'seals & valves' - 'going South' and the short 'shooting season (it's COLD up here in Duluth, MN most of the year and CO 2 ain't worth a Darn below 68 degrees F), and the cost of CO 2 Cartridges......so I don't have a 'lot of experience with pistols (the RWS 5G P5 and the LP-8 are my 'first Springer's), and I don't have a lot of knowledge and experience with them.......but, during the month of shooting I had, before my 'Leg Problem'.....  I couldn't hit 'the broad side of a barn with 'iron sights' (due to my 68 year-old eyes), and the scope is 'a great help'......I set up a folding card table and and sandbag on the table and sat in a folding chair with the gun setting 'just forward of the Trigger Guard' in the 'V" of the sandbag and shot at a beer can at about 30 feet, and 'tore out the center of the can' without many missed shots, so 'I was happy with that' for as short a 'shooting season' as I had.....

I like the gun & scope combo VERY MUCH.   Since then,  I've aquired a HW-45 in .20 cal,  a HW-40 PCA in .177 cal,
and a Webley-ALECTO   in .22 cal,    and I haven't shot these yet due to my aforementioned location & health problems....oh well,   'all things in their time' !
