Thank you! I have missed shooting in these, and this is my first PCP.
I was having an off day when I shot, but such is life.

Not satisfied but not too unhappy for this old man.

Whoops, thought I had until the 31st.  Here's my unofficial target.  Used CPHP, not the gun's favorite, but did surprisingly well.

Avenger .177
Hatsan 3-12x50AO (12x)
CPHP .177

Nice shooting Bob! I've been trying to figure out how to use the Taran website,  but can't figure it out.  I've been able to upload the target, but cannot figure out how to proceed from there.  It says to mark my shots.  I'm not understanding how. Please help! 😳 Thanks
Eric

Hey Eric,

I realized last night that you can download TARAN -- it still opens a web page and behaves the same, but no internet connection is required.  But anyway, how far do you get on TARAN past uploading the image?  Here's a quick rundown:

*Enter basic info -- Title, Units, Distance, Caliber  I use metric, "27.4m" 4.5mm, but I imagine imperial works just fine
*Click on +Add Target, then choose/upload target image
*Rotate image if needed, I leave "Optimize image resolution" checked, and hit Big Green Checkmark (BGC) when good.

Now you should see target image with "-" "shrink" "+" and a "1/2" ruler thing.
Use "+" to zoom way in on one target/bullseye circle to "measure" it accurately.
*Click the "1/2", click on the left side of the target circle, green dot appears, you can grab the dot and move it exactly on the line.  When good hit the BGC.
*Now go click another green dot onto the right side of target circle.  A green line joins the two dots.  Move the second dot until it is exactly where you want it -- the line should intersect the exact center of the target.  When good, hit the BGC.
*Now it prompts you to type in a number.  Measure your actual paper target with a ruler, exact same line as you made on the screen.  For these 30 yard matches, I have the outer ring of the "7" zone to be 43mm.  Type in "43" and click the BGC.  "43mm" shows on the image above the line. Cool.
*Now click on the "+Bullseye" to add a POA.  Click on the image center to add a green dot, drag it to exact target center, click BGC.
Now you have 2 more gadgets show up, "XBullseye" to remove the most recent POA you just made (if you messed up) and "+Hole" to add a pellet hole.
*Click "+Hole", click on a pellet hole, and it adds a 4.5mm sized dot, which you can move and guess your best where the pellet hit.  When good...hit BGC.
Now you have one more option added..."XHole" to remove the hole you just placed.

The worst part is the "undo" function" is only for the last hole or last POA.  So if you make a mistake, correct it immediately.

*When done adding holes to the current POA, click the "+Bullseye" to start marking up the next POA.

When done with one target image, you can add another if you want, by clicking the top icon in the left side panel that looks like two stacked sheets of paper, and use the "+Add Target" option, and mark it up the same way.

At most anytime you can hit the icon on the left panel with the Greek letters, and that brings up the calculations and image for your collective POAs and POIs.  The exact center of the image (Gold dot) is the calculated average of all your POIs, relative to their POA (Red dot).  This tool is intended for evaluating groupsize and accuracy, not scoring.  Ideally both dots are in the same spot (center), but it may show you need to adjust your scope by a click or two to make them coincide...  Lots of data here for your collective groupsize, and how far your group center is off from your POA.

On mine, the holes are so dense, it covers up the POA red dot (annoying) but the numbers on the left show my collective shots are low and left, so my POA dot would be slightly high and right (3mm, 3mm)

I'd definitely suggest playing with it before adding lots of data, make sure you understand it more or less, so you you don't end up having to re-enter data.  BTDT.

There are also options to download your data in csv, xml, and svg formats.  Looks like you can upload in xml as well.  I haven't messed with that, but it looks like a way to save the data and upload it again later, or export to another tool.  I usually just do a "Print Screen" of the collected data image and the target face with 4.5mm dots on it.

Hope this helps, lmk if I made it more confusing!

EDIT -- I just saw on the targets we use, that line should be 43.38mm, but use a ruler to verify your printer is printing to exact scale, and use the ruler's number if different.  It affects how big it draws the pellet holes and all groupsize and MOA measurements.

Also wanted to point out that 4.5mm circles on screen are considerably larger than the holes in the paper, which only measure 3-3.5mm on my target, so that's where you can pick up a few more points!

Bob, Thank you for taking the time to put together this tutorial!  I still have no idea how to score these targets, or if this even helps, but it is pretty cool seeing them all on one Bullseye!  Now, what's up with this confidence-o-meter and what is it so close to the BS rating?   :o ;D :P

Eric,
Glad to help, hope it makes sense when you try it out.

Paul,
It's really for evaluating group size, which can help sort out which pellet/velocity works best for your gun.  But the blue dots can really help scoring, too.  The key phrase in the rules is this:

"If any part of a scoring ring (demarcation line between the scoring zones) is touched by this circle, including even the outside edge of the scoring ring line, the shot is scored the higher value of the two scoring zones.

Basically, if the blue circle (that is exactly .22" diameter) even *touches* a scoring line, you get the points for the higher side.  Its sort of fuzzy to look at, but I made my best guesses on your target where I think you mis-scored, and you have lots of 10s marked 9s.  Ones with ? I'm not sure.  One with ? looks like you mis-located the pellet hole?  Again, it's fuzzy, so I can't be sure.  You are killing it!  Except that last 8, ain't that a &!+(#  ;)

The numbers like R99 mean -- 99% of your shots would fall inside 1.55 MOA.  Pretty darn good!
The H and V -- I think you were almost spot on -- which means your average POI is almost exactly your POA.
The BS rating is based on how many shots are used to do the statistics.  As I have read, the military requires no less than five 5-shot groups to trust the gun/ammo.  Some use 30 shots.  More is always better.  So the R99 number may not be exactly what you/the gun/the ammo is capable of, but I expect it is very close, and would not change by much if you added 20 more shots to the mix.

The statistics are a bit confusing, I'll quote them below.  I think "SD" is the most immediately useful, for comparing group sizes (of same number of shots) , rather than using ES - extreme spread.

Oh, R95 and R99 are using a radius!  Duh.  So if it shows 1 MOA, you'd almost always hit a 2 MOA target.

" SD (a.k.a. sigma) is the normal distribution's standard deviation (and Rayleigh's scale parameter).
* R50, also known as Circular Error Probable (CEP) or Mean Radius, is the radius, which would statistically contain 50% of all shots -- a very common ballistic and military measure of a weapon's precision. A caveat on this one: it is a result of a mathematical model, and represents what would happen with an infinite number of shots; the actual shots accounted for in the project may be distributed slightly differently, and not exactly fall 50/50 inside/outside of R50 (but with enough shots it should be very close).
* D5x and D10x, calculated mostly for entertainment purposes, represent the average extreme spread of 5-shot and 10-shot groups that can be expected from the rifle. Nota Bene: it does not mean that shots of such groups will be contained in a given diameter circle around the average PoI; actual centres of groups may be very different from the real rifle's PoI and it's mathematical estimation.
* R95 and R99 -- respectively radii containing 95% and 99% of the shots. R95 is a good indication of a "likely hit" probability."
