Title: Flashy " bling " or not ?
Post by: bantam5s on April 15, 2022, 06:36:17 PM
Do you go for that sort of thing on your Crosman pistol / carbine builds or not ?
And if you do, what's your idea behind doing a build like that ?
Mostly I really just don't like the look myself , especially when it's over the top because it's just not my thing.

For my current 2240 build I decided I would go a little different that I normally would, but still more on the subtle side.

I don't have everything yet, but here what I'm going with.
I got some brass grip screws , some walnut grips on order, a brass safety on order, made a custom brass bolt, and might order a brass trigger.

No large flashy parts that really stand out a mile away, just some subtle touches.

I started to quote Ricks post and say +1 on hating bling, then I read Phil's post, so now I'm gonna say +3 on hating bling on airguns.

I have a friend who has a couple of pairs of tight jeans with rhinestones on the hip pockets. That is where bling belongs, I reckon. She has hers down pat anyway.

I understand customizing something and if you're gonna put money into it you might as well make it different,  but some people take it too far in my mind.

Fancy machined knobs sticking out the back of the gun, bright shiny muzzles, barrel bands, flashy custom co2 caps, large flashy custom bolts, bright vibrantly colored grips or stocks and more.

I get wanting to make it your own, but if everybody goes with their own flavor of the same kind of flash and bling it may be a little unique to you but still kind of the same as everybody else.

I either see too little with just some clamp on mounts for an optic on a dead stock gun, or too much with flashy custom bling everywhere,  but I don't often see just a little.

I may even feel I've gone a little too far when I'm done,  but I will have to wait and see how I like it when I'm done.

I dunno, but when I build a gun it has perfect with no scratches or defects.

I love brass (own guns that have them), but they tend to tarnish right away.

Yes, I also love laminate furniture and have a couple from Steve Corcoran and Vernon Austin.

I am currently working on new 1377 carbine. when it is finished it should look like it came off the 1990 Gulf War battlefield.

I had them professionally reblued by a gunsmith (the top one):

Brass accents do look nice.

Had them custom-made--some of them  ;D

Grips have been powdercoated too and rid of the cast marks.

Generally speaking, there should be 3 colors - steel, wood, controls
Something like:
wood grips, blue/black tube & barrel, SS screws (or brass if that's your thing)  I've got an idea for doing my tube/barrel in a color - leaving the breech and barrel band black.  Or plastic stocks instead - not sure yet.

Although not for me, I like seeing customized guns. Some look really cool.

How much before it’s overdone? That’s up to the individual who owns it. If you think more is better…go for. Then post a picture so I can see it.

It's all a balancing act I suppose.

I love looking at all the really beautiful upgrade options many come up with. Rick, you have some of the most beautiful guns out there.  ;)

At the very beginning, I gave some thought to the many shiny things available out there, but my guns are pest guns. A good comfortable stock option, LDC, a scope, decent power, and an accurate barrel is all I need. The two Tom West stocks are about as much bling as I have done and also the last.;)

I like the GRT trigger's gold color. I have replaced the stock screws and trigger guard screw on my old Chinese rebuilds with brass screws and little brass screw to mount the sling swivels on the side. The little screw in B3's under lever clip with brass. I like the faux ivory grips on a black pistol. Maybe silver screws and trigger and trigger guard on a black plastic stock. Little things.

Kinda like H-D motorcycles - There's thousands out there and they're all different - some subtly, some drastically.  All suit the individual owner.

We all have different tastes, but I would never install 3D-printed stuff on my guns.

Yes, they are cheap but thoroughly insipid  ;D

Extra weight, extra bulk, shiny stuff, decorative stuff, lights, lasers, bipods. . . .  Nope.

Scopes, mounts, sling swivels, and moderators.  Yep

Not saying I ain’t tempted to build a flashy, pimped out, race gun but at the end of the day I want to take any gun I own hunting.  So my builds are always hunting/pesting oriented.

I probably wouldn't either, one of my main goals with any build is generally to eliminate as much plastic as I possibly can.

Synthetic furniture has it's place, but beyond that I consider the only purpose of plastic parts to be cost savings and I'm not going to spend as much or more than the gun on better parts only to leave it ful of cheap plastic.

Any good sources for upgrading screws to fit the c362? I agree on the 3D printed stuff (perfect for a Red Ryder, but brass is even better!) I am a sucker for stainless, Cothran ized my 22xx stuff immediately….

Guns with bling seem more accurate too  ;D

Hmm, I'd like to build another Cothran Disco, a BR gun, with a gigantic stock like this:

Looks rough but I like the way it looks.

The wood is Philippine Ebony/Kamagong

Very tough and a beauty  ;D

I'm more of flat black, gun meatal and camo kinda guy.
For some reason I normally shy away from Camo on my guns, because I thought it was the coolest thing ever as a kid before learning to appreciate wood and steel.
I don't hate it, but rattle canning a gun camo just makes me feel like I'm reverting to the dumb things I did as a kid.

If I could get my 2400kt hydro dipped in a classic " m81 " woodland camo I'd go for that in a heartbeat, but I do not like Mossy oak or real tree type camo patterns.

Don't like CAMO myself.

I prefer stainless, then brass is second.

I like to dress up my LDCs as well  ;D

Actually, they are OEM bolt handles but I had the other one lathed to look like Mjolnir, then nickel-plated.

I sent them to the now deceased Mr. Carl Quick (Quickster in the CAPOF) as a gift a long time ago.

Heres a little discreet and subtle but of something that only the shooter will see.
( I think I'll stamp a D into it )

I didn't have a breech plug , and this piece of brass was on hand for an easy 5 minute part.

I think I used my breech plug on the lefty breech on my American boy 2300kt rifle when I didn't have a gun that needed this breech

Nice touch!

Had one made for me that was pointy to match the pointy C02 cap cover one on the first page.

Because of this thread, I am thinking of having brass bits in my next build, I think  ;D

Might go home to the PI for a vacation, hmm.

Gonna bring my AG parts for sure  ;D

Yeah, kinda looks like an overgrown Mannlicher stock  ;D

Also reminds me of my custom Tony Mele BR stock that has a 3" wide forearm.

Does not move when you bench it; it kind of dozes off like a St Bernard mutt  ;D

This current 2240 build is finally complete, and about as flashy as I'd ever go.
(https://i.postimg.cc/GmLV2Jhz/20220421-172318.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/7fRmtzzT)

I just couldn't wait to find some kind of brass trigger available so I decided to just make one, I knew it would be fairly straightforward to make a functional trigger with basic tools but getting a semi decent looking finished result is a different story.
It looks better in person, still looks like I made it but not bad at all after I played with it enough to decide I liked it then went back and cleaned it up the best I can.

Yes, not too easy to find a brass one nowadays.

MAP has one but is being sold as a kit.

GMAC has been out of stock for the longest time.

I'm kind of glad, because this was surprisingly easy to make.
If I had brass of a more appropriate thickness it would have been easier,  and really I could have just put a trigger shoe on it instead of needing to do any soldering.

Heres a better shot before I decided I was happy enough to go through with the final finishing.

Black dogs need a little flash or bling , I don't know how many times I've practically tripped over my pup pepper because I couldn't see her.
Namely down the hallway where it's dark.
